Engineer of Safesea Vishnu tanker, Mumbai resident, killed in attack near Iraq

Deonandan Prasad Singh, an additional chief engineer (superintendent), of MT Safesea Vishnu, died on Wednesday following an attack on the Marshall Island-flagged tanker. The incident occurred during ship-to-ship cargo loading operations near the Khor Al Zubair Port, near Basra, Iraq, amid ongoing strife in the region. This was confirmed through a press note issued by the directorate general of shipping.. A rescuer guides a man out of a lifeboat, after Iranian explosive-laden boats appear to have attacked two fuel tankers in Iraqi waters setting them ablaze (REUTERS). The tanker, which was carrying around 48,000 metric tonnes of naphtha, was struck by an unidentified object. Preliminary reports indicate that a white-coloured unmanned speedboat carrying explosives approached the vessel from the starboard side and rammed into it, resulting in a major fire onboard.. Singh, a native of Bihar and a resident of Kandivali, is survived by his wife and two children. He was in his mid-50s.. Singh’s brother-in-law Dr Chandan Kumar said, “We learnt about his death from his company. However, the shipping ministry has not told us anything. His son, who resides out of Mumbai, will reach the city on Friday. We are all in state of shock.”. Singh had earlier worked with Neom Maritime, United Ocean Ship Management, Bernard Schulte Ship Management, Samson Maritime and Shipping Corporation. The directorate general of shipping has been in touch with Singh’s family, and it is believed his wife is in a state of shock.. Following the incident, all crew members abandoned the vessel and entered the water for safety. They were subsequently rescued by an STS tug operating in the vicinity.. The Iraqi Coast Guard evacuated the remaining 27 crew members – which include 15 Indian and 12 Filipino nationals. They have been safely transported to a small island near the Port of Basra.. Retired judge to probe fake diplomas linked to promotions in Karnataka Transport Dept

The Karnataka government has ordered an inquiry by a retired judge into allegations that some employees in the Transport Department used fraudulent diploma certificates to obtain promotions.. Retired judge to probe fake diplomas linked to promotions in Karnataka Transport Dept. Responding to questions from JD(S) member TA Sharavana in the Legislative Council, transport minister Ramalinga Reddy on Wednesday said preliminary findings suggested irregularities and that the investigation would also examine the possible involvement of the department of technical education.. “On the face of it, irregularities appear to have taken place. It does not involve only the transport department. The technical education department also appears to be involved. Retired judge Narayana has already been appointed to conduct an inquiry and a gazette notification has been issued,” Reddy said.. Sharavana urged the government to take action against those who had allegedly submitted forged certificates, citing provisions under the Karnataka Civil Services Rules (KCSR). He also questioned how some candidates appeared to have taken examinations in multiple cities within a short time.. “Those who wrote examinations in places such as Mysuru and Belagavi are said to have appeared in Bengaluru within a short span. How was this possible, and how were certificates issued?” he asked.. Reddy said a diploma qualification is required for clerical staff seeking promotion to Group C Motor Vehicle Inspector posts. To facilitate employees pursuing higher studies, the department issued an order on October 12, 2022, allowing up to 10% of staff to enrol in further education programmes.. Under that provision, 17 employees were permitted to pursue diploma courses during the 2022–23 academic year, 24 during 2023–24, and 15 during 2024–25, the minister said.. Of those who obtained diplomas, two were not employees of the transport department, while another two had taken regular leave to pursue their studies. Questions were raised about the certificates submitted by the remaining employees, he added.. Reddy said the Transport Commissioner had written to the Director of Technical Education seeking clarification about the suspected certificates. As the response was not satisfactory, notices were issued to the employees on March 3, 2026, asking them to explain.. The inquiry led by the retired judge will examine the allegations and recommend action against those found responsible, the minister said.

India has diversified LPG sources, says Hardeep Singh Puri amid panic over supply

India has “actively” diversified its liquefied petroleum gas (or cooking gas) imports to alternate suppliers such as the US, Norway, Canada, Algeria, and Russia, in addition to available Gulf sources, petroleum minister Hardeep Singh Puri told Parliament on Thursday.. Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri speaks in Lok Sabha during the Budget Session (2026-27) of Parliament, New Delhi, on Thursday. (Sansad TV/ANI Video Grab). “It should be noted that India was previously importing approximately 60% of its LPG requirements from Gulf countries such as Qatar, UAE, Saudi Arabia, and Kuwait and 40% is produced domestically. Procurement has now been actively diversified, with cargoes being secured from the United States, Norway, Canada, Algeria, and Russia, in addition to available Gulf sources,” he said in the Lok Sabha in a statement.. Informing the House about the ministry’s steps in response to the disruption to global energy supply arising from the ongoing conflict in West Asia, Puri said: “The world has not faced a moment like this in modern energy history. Today is the 13th day since the passage through the Strait of Hormuz, through which 20% of world’s crude, 20% of world’s natural gas and 20% of the world’s LPG flows, was disrupted following the military operation between Iran, Israel and the US.”. The minister assured the House that India’s crude supply position is secure. “Volumes secured exceed what Hormuz would have delivered. Before this crisis, approximately 45% of India’s crude imports transited the Hormuz route. Thanks to Hon’ble PM’s outstanding diplomatic outreach and goodwill, India has secured crude volumes that exceed what the disrupted Strait route would have delivered in the same period,” he said.. “Non-Hormuz sourcing has risen to approximately 70% of crude imports, up from 55% before the conflict began,” he said. India sources crude from 40 countries, against 27 in 2006-07. Diversified sourcing gave New Delhi options to meet its requirements and Indian refineries are operating at “high capacity utilisation” with some exceeding 100%, he said. “There is no shortage of petrol, diesel, kerosene, ATF or fuel oil.”. A petroleum ministry official, requesting anonymity, said none of the retail outlets in the country is dry. As on September 30, 2025, India has 99,281 retail outlets with 28,533 in rural areas.. Puri said the government is managing natural gas supply through prioritised allocation, and the position is “stable well beyond immediate need”. India produces about 90 Million Metric Standard Cubic Metres per Day (MMSCMD) of natural gas domestically and consumes about 189 MMSCMD, the official said. Import of about 30 MMSCMD through Gulf sources are currently affected by the force majeure declaration from a major Qatari p
