Earlier this year, Lena Dunham released her memoir “Famesick.” In the tell-all book, she alleged that her “Girls” co-star Adam Driver screamed in her face, threw a chair, and even punched a hole in his trailer. Although the actor, best known for his role as Kylo Ren/Ben Solo in the “Star Wars” universe, has yet to publicly comment on the accusations, one of his costars is speaking out. Despite the accusations made by Lena Dunham in her “Famesick” memoir, Johansson has nothing but praise for her “Marriage Story” costar. In September 2025, she told PEOPLE magazine that it was “great” working with Driver on the film.
“I love Adam as a person, and he is an absolutely extraordinary actor,” she said at the time. “If I could make every movie with Adam Driver, I would.”

In the 2019 drama, Driver and Johansson play a couple going through a difficult divorce. In one of the scenes, the pair scream at each other, and Driver’s character, Charlie, even punches a hole through the wall as he tells Johansson’s character Nicole, “Every day I wake up and hope you’re dead.”
The infamous scene was later used by the U.S. Department of Agriculture in order to scare off a pack of gray wolves that had reportedly been “terrorizing” an Oregon farm’s livestock, according to the Wall Street Journal.
When told about the news, Johannson joked, “I’m glad we could be useful!”

In 2019, Johansson told As If magazine that the scene was “brutal” to film. “We spent two entire days screaming at each other, brutally screaming and fighting for two full days,” she shared at the time.
“It was exhausting, but if I didn’t have as strong an actor as Adam to take all the stuff I was giving him, I would have been lost,” she added. “For me, working with other actors is a really important part of what I do … it’s everything.”

In their new film “Paper Tiger,” Johansson plays Hester Pearl, the wife of Irwin Pearl, played by Miles Teller. The two are enjoying a happy life raising two boys in 1980s New York. Things take a turn for the worse when Irwin’s brother, Gary, played by Adam Driver, arrives and puts the family in danger due to his ties with the Russian mafia.
“I would’ve loved to have had even more scenework with him, I love working with him,” she told The Hollywood Reporter ahead of the film’s premiere at the Cannes film festival on Saturday, May 16.
Fortunately, she had nice things to say about being Teller’s spouse this time around.
“He’s so unexpectedly tender,” she said of her relationship with Teller on set. “I went away for a couple of weeks to do the press for Jurassic — I felt crazy to leave, but I had to go — and when I was gone, I’d get photographs of my makeup station from Miles, and he’d be like, ‘Where’s Hester?’”

In her memoir “Famesick,” Dunham had a lot to say about her “Girls” co-star. She revealed that they “felt like partners” and found herself coming to him for advice on decisions “that weren’t his to make” despite the “chair incident.”
As The Blast previously reported, Dunham claimed that they were standing in the kitchen when she “looked up to see him smiling at me with something so tender, it felt like it could only have been love.”
In another passage, she wrote, “I spent an inordinate amount of time wondering if Adam liked me,” adding, “He could be short-tempered and verbally aggressive, condescending and physically imposing. He could also be protective, loving even.”
She also alleges that they almost crossed a boundary in their relationship when his now-wife, Joanne Tucker, was out of town. Although she told him that he could come over late one night, she claims she pretended to be asleep once he actually arrived.
“If we crossed whatever boundary we were threatening to cross, the return to work would be tinged with humiliation, that I’d be minimizing any authority I still had, and that, however it went, my heart -bruised but improbably not yet broken – would crack,” she wrote in the book. She alleges that Driver called to tell her that he was engaged a month after the incident, and the two never spoke of it again.
Driver has yet to publicly comment on the allegations.
