Why a 10-minute workout can be the most effective movement you try

What if strength, stamina and movement didn’t require an hour-long commitment or a meticulously planned routine? Could showing up for a short workout for even just 10 minutes still count? In this piece, we ask the experts.. The benefits of a short workout. A short workout prioritises intensity over duration. Instead of long breaks and multiple sets, movements flow quickly from one to the next, keeping the heart rate elevated in a short window of time. Most routines rely purely on body weight, making them accessible regardless of fitness level, space or equipment.. Because they’re short, they slip easily into everyday life as the first thing in the morning, as a mid-day reset between meetings or as a final burst of movement before winding down for the night.. According to Dr Gayatri Hariram, sport physiotherapist at Nuvana, this structure still delivers meaningful physiological benefits when done consistently. “A short workout typically involves high-intensity circuit exercises that elevate the heart rate, increase oxygen delivery and activate various muscle groups,” she explains. “Over time, this improves cardiovascular function, boosts metabolic rate, enhances insulin sensitivity and strengthens both aerobic and anaerobic systems.”. Arun Singh, head of performance at DriveFITT, adds that the impact goes beyond just calorie burn. “If done daily and consistently, a short workout acts as a powerful habit builder first,” he says. “Over time, it improves cardio efficiency, joint mobility, neuro-vascular coordination and muscular adaptation. For working professionals with sedentary lifestyles, it’s a practical way to maintain an active state.”. Is it actually enough?. 10 minutes may sound insignificant, especially when compared to traditional gym sessions. But a short workout can jump-start circulation, wake up the nervous system and help the body transition out of a sedentary state, something many of us struggle with after long hours at a desk.. Over time, these brief sessions build strength, improve endurance and stabilise energy levels throughout the day. Even for someone who hasn’t exercised in months, 10-15 minutes of intentional movement is far more effective than staying completely inactive.. Singh is clear about expectations. “This cannot replace longer strength sessions aimed at hypertrophy or major body composition changes,” he explains. “But for maintaining lean muscle mass, increasing daily calorie expenditure and improving insulin sensitivity, short workouts are very effective.” He also points out that consistent exposure to manageable stimulus often leads to a natural progression toward longer or more intense training.. The power of consistency. The biggest reason short workouts work is simple: people actually do them. Long, demanding routines often feel mentally heavy, making it easier to skip a session altogether in the name of a ‘busy day’.. Starting small reduces the mental resistance around fitnes

This wedding in New Delhi was stitched together by a mother’s designs and generations of heirlooms

Even the invitation cards reflected that careful attention and involvement by the family. More than a thousand were sent out, each personalised with titles. Ashraf typed many of the names herself. “If it was a married couple, the invite said Janab so and so, and Begum so and so. If it was a single woman, for example, we wrote Bibi so and so,” says Ashraf.. The ceremonies began with the Mayo where guests arrived dressed in shades of bougainvillaea that filled the space, while Ashraf wore yellow. Later that evening a smaller qawwali gathering followed, attended by close friends and family with classical musicians who had travelled from Rampur to perform. The next day began with Afroze’s manjha ceremony, where married women from the family placed mehendi on a betel leaf resting in the groom’s palm to ward off nazar and give their blessings. Ashraf’s mehendi followed that evening; traditional mirasi singers from Lucknow performed wedding songs, along with a Sufi performance by Zila Khan and an after-party with a DJ.. Rather than relying on a single caterer, the families brought in khansamas from Rampur, Lucknow and Hyderabad to make their regional specialities. “We wanted people to remember the food,” says Ashraf. Guests moved between dishes, from Hyderabadi mutton soup and Rampuri taar korma to kebabs, nihari and more.. Guests also left the celebrations with small keepsakes assembled by the family. Handmade potlis filled with coriander mukhwas, pocket squares, bangles and laungeen necklaces.. The bride’s ensembles had been designed almost entirely by her mother through her label Sihali Jageer, drawing on heirloom jewellery, archival silhouettes and textiles revived through working with artisans in Lucknow and Varanasi. The wardrobe had been developed over months in conversation with stylist Devanshi Tuli, who had known the family for years through her work with Sihali Jageer.. “Styling a bride always begins with understanding who she is,” Tuli says. “You have to think about how she walks, how she sits, how she dances through the day.” For Ashraf’s wedding, the process meant working with beautiful heirloom jewellery, archival garments preserved by her mother and references drawn from vintage portraits. Tuli says, “Our aim was to honour that heritage while making the garments practical enough for her to celebrate freely.”. For Ayesha Ashraf, creating the garments meant revisiting traditions she had grown up with and translating them into pieces her daughter could inhabit comfortably. “These are silhouettes our Pathan brides used to wear,” she says. “I wanted them to feel alive again.” For the Mayo ceremony, Ashraf wore a peshwas constructed from cotton jaali and layered with mukaish, where flattened silver wire is hand-worked into tiny dots across the fabric. The garment required more than twenty metres of fabric, creating a sweeping ghera that moved easily as the bride walked through the ceremony. “All the jeweller

9 new art shows in India we’re excited about this March

Between the grains of timber, rebellion speaks in the language of love. Before the eye, beneath the gouge, Arpan Sadhukhan returns to the physical labour of carving and printing at Srishti Art Gallery, in an age where political imagery is endlessly circulated, aestheticised and even algorithmically generated. Resistance is material, marks are deliberate and surfaces bear pressure. death is nothing but love, borrowed from Nabarun Bhattacharya’s poem This Death Valley Is Not My Land, declares not grief but defiance. Raised in a grocer’s household in Barrackpore, Sadhukhan learned to watch closely, to notice the rhythms of daily trade, the push and pull of buying and selling, the small economies of care and survival. That intimacy follows him into his art, where consumer culture is both subject and mirror, approached with a gaze that blends critique and empathy. For this show, the woodcut leaves its regular plane and rises into sculptural space, inviting viewers to step inside the ethical and emotional currents of dissent.. On view at Srishti Art Gallery, 267, Road No. 15, Jubilee Hills, Hyderabad from 21st February to 30th March 2026.. The Baroda March, curated by Rukshaan Krishna at Rukshaan Art, Mumbai. ‘Untitled’ (2025) by Gulab Kapadiya. Image courtesy: Rukshaan Art.. Within the constellation of the 19th edition of The Baroda March, shaped by the pedagogy of the Faculty of Fine Arts at Maharaja Sayajirao University of Baroda, small business holders are seen as the protagonists in Gulab Kapadiya’s paintings. In a corner of the city where the sun pours like molten amber and morning stirs in the poetry of hands at work, a man bends and folds stubborn bamboo into baskets that will carry the weight of the day; a barber’s blade cuts through hair and air; a vegetable seller arranges his greens with care, laying out the sustenance that nourishes the neighbourhood. These gestures are intimate chronicles of daily life and survival, transformed through layered watercolour on rice paper, further extended onto canvas. The Baroda March offers a platform to nearly fifty artists each year, reminding us that sometimes it is the artwork itself, sometimes the artist’s journey, and sometimes the gathering that frames them.. On view at Rukshaan Art, 1st floor, Laxmi Building, Ballard Estate, Mumbai from 21st March to 17th May 2026..
