​Once upon a time, I wanted to be a princess. I watched Sleeping Beauty glide across the ballroom in a pink gown, gold tiara perched on her head, so I would tie a bedsheet around my torso, letting the excess fabric sweep the floor behind me like a train. I’d step into my mum’s high heels, several sizes too big, and wobble across the room with the seriousness of someone on royal duty. But on my head, the one piece that truly belonged to me, that made me the princess I believed I was, sat a tiara. This piece of plastic was elegant and distinguished, and that’s exactly how it made me feel.. Now, twenty years later, the occasions to wear a tiara are few and far between, but there is one moment I know I can count on: my wedding. The Indian bride, after all, is something of a real-life princess. And on the day that marks the beginning of her happily ever after, she certainly knows how to look the part.. “Bridal styling today has become incredibly personal. Brides are really thinking about what feels like them. And it’s usually those brides—the ones with a clear point of view—who are drawn to something as singular as a tiara. Weddings are such a significant moment of personal expression, and for some brides, the tiara becomes that final, defining gesture,” shares Ashwin Lodha, Creative Head of Alok Lodha Jewels, whose repertoire includes a dazzling selection of tiaras.. Of course, extravagance has never been unfamiliar territory for the Indian wedding. The lehengas get heavier every year, the diamonds get bigger and the guest list is often comparable to a small village. In that context, the tiara feels like a natural evolution. But once the wedding diary closes, how do you justify a piece of jewellery, however beautiful, for a single day? The good news is that the tiara is far more versatile than it first appears. “It isn’t frozen in one format. A central stone can be detached and worn as a pendant or elements can be reimagined as brooches. It can transform over time, which is really what gives it longevity,” Lodha explains.. ​It’s one thing to grow up with strict parents or even become a parentified child. But it’s another to be raised by narcissist parents—a specific kind of upbringing that impacts you long after your childhood technically ends.. These days, “narcissist” has become a buzzword to describe manipulative exes, tyrannical bosses or essentially anyone who acts like an entitled jerk. Clinically, there is such a thing as Narcissistic Personality Disorder (NPD), a rare, diagnosable mental health condition that requires a formal evaluation. But when people use this term in everyday conversation, they usually aren’t referring to this, though. More often than not, they’re talking about selfish people with narcissistic traits: “A person who is self-centered, has a lot of self-importance, and believes they’re the most important person in the room,” says Suzanne Manser, licensed psychologist and author of I Hate You (A Love Letter to My Mother): Healing Paper Cuts, Mother Wounds, and Intergenerational Pain. “It’s someone who needs to be admired; who thinks they should always get their way, because it’s obviously the best; who sees everyone else’s feelings as irrelevant.”. If that’s the kind of person (or people) you were brought up by, you probably absorbed a few harsh truths early on, Dr. Manser says: Like the idea that love is conditional; or that your needs come second—if they’re even acknowledged at all. But how do you know if you were actually raised by narcissists, and not just difficult or tough-to-please parents? While there’s no definitive checklist, psychologists have observed that adults who grew up this way tend to share most, if not all, of the behavioural patterns below.. 1. You’re hyperfocused on doing the “right” thing—and paranoid about doing the wrong one. In a narcissistic household, the punishment for “messing up” is disproportionate and unpredictable, says Ramani Durvasula, clinical psychologist and author of It’s Not You: Identifying and Healing from Narcissistic People. A forgotten chore, a slightly “off” tone or any normal teenage mistake will often spiral into a condescending lecture or the silent treatment—experiences that may lead you to carry a constant fear of criticism, even in low-stakes situations.. For example, “you might quadruple check if you’ve packed your charger or become paranoid about, ‘Did I sound okay when I said that?’ ‘What kind of gift should I get? I don’t want to bring the wrong one!’” Dr. Durvasula says. “In general, there’s a lot of self-doubt and anxiety,” because being imperfect in these situations isn’t just an inevitable part of life: It means risking withdrawal, ridicule or a sudden loss of affection from the very person whose approval you crave most.. 2.
