‘How do you control type 2 diabetes with diet?’

“How do you control type 2 diabetes with diet?” That’s the question a Quora user asked, and to get informed insight, we reached out to Dr Pranav Ghody, consultant endocrinologist and diabetologist at Wockhardt Hospitals, Mumbai Central, who said: “Type 2 diabetes is largely caused by insulin resistance, and diet has a major impact on controlling it. In many people recently diagnosed with Type 2 diabetes, particularly those who are overweight or have mild blood glucose levels, changes in diet can greatly improve glucose levels, and in some people, can even delay or reduce the need for medication.”. Noting that “controlling” diabetes does not always mean “curing” it, he stressed, “Diabetes is a metabolic disease, and controlling it involves many variables, including the duration of time a person has been diabetic, the insulin reserve of the pancreas, body weight, level of exercise, sleep, and stress level.”. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. What type of diet actually helps?. Generally, there is no such thing as a “diabetes diet”, emphasised Dr Ghody, adding that some general principles, however, seem to work well. “It is recommended that meals consist of high-fibre foods such as vegetables, whole grains, lentils, and nuts. It is recommended that refined carbohydrates, such as white bread, polished rice, and sweets, be limited because they can lead to rapid increases in blood glucose levels. It is recommended that protein should always be included with meals because this helps to slow down glucose absorption.”. It is recommended that meals not be too large and that there not be a heavy dinner too late at night, because this can affect fasting blood glucose levels. “It is not recommended that crash diets should be followed because this would affect glucose control,” said Dr Ghody.. Are there any tips? (Photo: AI Generated). When is diet not enough?. If blood sugars are high to start with or if the body is not producing enough insulin, medication is necessary, said Dr Ghody. “Medicines and diet are not opposing each other; they go hand in hand. Medicines should not be ignored if they have been prescribed, as they can lead to complications with the heart, kidneys, eyes, and nervous system.”. Story continues below this ad. While diet is effective, it is part of the overall picture. “The most important things for people with type 2 diabetes to be aware of include early intervention, monitoring, weight, and review. With the right advice, people with type 2 diabetes can lead active, complication-free lives with normal, well-controlled sugar levels.”. Suniel Shetty recalls following Sir Vivian Richards fitness advice since he was 14: ‘I got stronger legs’

Suniel Shetty, 64, recently recalled meeting retired cricketer Sir Viv Richards, saying he was inspired by his fitness advice. “Health is forever. Right from kindergarten, from school (I was into fitness). I once met Sir Vivian Richards. Obsessive fan…went up to him and spoke to him,” Shetty shared in a conversation with YouTube podcaster Raj Shamani.. The Dhadkan actor recalled, “I still remember him telling me…because he was huge…considering people give you the feeling that every time you are big, you can’t play a sport….because of lack of movement…I went to him and asked him…he said, No…I can hit the ball harder. Not that he spoke to me for too long. So, he said, weight train. You see me hit the ball? That caught on to me…so, then I started mixing. Doing a lot of functional for legs, but a lot of pullups and all that otherwise. I got the size. I got stronger legs that would carry my weight around ever since 14-15 years.”. Taking a cue from the actor’s emphasis on building leg strength, we asked an expert why it is an important principle in long-term fitness.. The lower body contains some of the largest muscle groups, including the quadriceps, hamstrings, and glutes. Training these muscles consistently improves strength, balance, and metabolic health. “For many athletes and fitness enthusiasts, leg training forms the foundation of overall physical performance,” said consultant dietitian and fitness expert Garima Goyal.. Here’s what you should consider (Photo: AI-generated). According to Goyal, strong legs support better posture, stability, and mobility. “Exercises such as squats, lunges and compound lower-body movements activate multiple muscles at once, improving coordination and functional strength. Over time, this helps protect the knees, hips, and lower back by distributing load efficiently during daily activities like walking, climbing stairs or lifting objects.”. Focusing on leg strength also benefits metabolic health. “Larger muscle groups require more energy to work, which can increase calorie expenditure and improve insulin sensitivity. This makes lower-body training valuable not only for athletic performance but also for maintaining healthy body composition and preventing lifestyle diseases,” Goyal said.. Another major advantage is injury prevention. “Strong glutes and hamstrings stabilise the pelvis and spine, reducing strain on the lower back. As individuals age, maintaining lower-body strength becomes even more important because it directly supports balance and reduces the risk of falls,” said Goyal.. Story continues below this ad. ‘He chose our marriage; but I still feel the second best’: Psychologist explains the lingering trauma of infidelity in marriage

Years of marriage, shared memories, and countless “I love yous” — a single discovery and all is gone. A picture-perfect love story is suddenly reduced to a fragile bond, struggling to survive after infidelity. It’s not just one couple’s story — it’s a reality many quietly live with.. Psychotherapist Lauren LaRusso shared one such case from a woman who wrote in after discovering her husband’s affair with his ex-girlfriend — a woman who is also married with children.. “My husband had an affair with his ex-girlfriend… It was deeply involved – sexual and emotional with daily contact, but they had not planned to leave their families. Since I discovered the affair, he has begged me for my forgiveness, cut off contact with her and is generally doing everything possible to repair our marriage. But I can’t help but feel like I’m the second best – his backup and safe option. It feels she is/was the love of his life… How can I ever compete with that?”. He stayed. He apologised. He is trying. Theoretically, he is following the right drill. Yet the haunting feeling of being the second one or someone who wasn’t chosen but settled for, lingers on.. “Discovering such a long and emotionally intense affair often shatters one’s sense of safety and identity within the relationship,” says psychologist Aparna Rai (Image: Pexels). Why does it still feel this way?. From the outside, it might look like reconciliation. The affair ended. Contact was cut off. The husband is remorseful. But emotionally, it’s rarely that simple.. According to Aparna Rani, Clinical Psychologist at Cadabams Hospitals, the pain runs deeper than the facts. “This is an incredibly painful situation, and the feelings described are completely valid,” she says.. “Discovering such a long and emotionally intense affair often shatters one’s sense of safety and identity within the relationship. Even when the partner shows remorse and takes corrective actions, the emotional residue of betrayal lingers because the comparison, real or perceived, becomes deeply internalized.”. Story continues below this ad. Even when the third person is gone, the comparison remains. The mind fills in gaps: Was she the real love? Am I just the safer option?. “It is important to understand that the sense of being ‘second best’ is not necessarily about the other person, but about the rupture of trust and self-worth that betrayal causes,” Rani explains. The injury is not competition — it is identity.. “Infidelity often makes the betrayed partner question their adequacy, but another person’s betrayal is never a reflection of one’s worth,” says psychologist Aparna Rai (Image: Pexels).
