Xanthelasma: Why those tiny yellow eyelid deposits matter for your heart

The human body is complex and can show what’s going on inside it in unusual ways. One such rather unexpected connection is that small yellow patches near the inner corners of your eyelids may be related to the cardiovascular system. Even though they seem harmless, according to Dr G Dimpu Edwin Jonathan, Consultant – Interventional Cardiologist, these deposits, called xanthelasma or xanthelasma palpebrarum (XP), are more than just a skin concern.. Xanthelasma: A visible clue to heart disease. “Cholesterol deposits build up under your skin to form a xanthelasma,” explains Dr Jonathan. They appear as soft, yellowish plaques on or around the eyelids, usually near the nose. Because the eyelids have very thin skin and a rich blood supply, they are often one of the first places where excess lipids become visible.. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. “In many cases, xanthelasma acts as a visible marker of systemic cholesterol imbalance or early atherosclerosis, rather than an isolated skin condition,” he tells indianexpress.com.. Can it really signal heart attack risk?. Yes — and that’s where it becomes important. “Xanthelasma can serve as an early warning sign of increased heart attack and cardiovascular disease risk, especially when they appear at a younger age or progress over time,” Dr Jonathan notes.. In fact, several studies have shown that individuals with xanthelasma have a significantly higher likelihood of developing coronary artery disease, myocardial infarction, and stroke — sometimes even before symptoms like chest pain begin. “In that sense, xanthelasma can be viewed as the body’s external signal pointing toward internal vascular risk,” the cardiologist adds.. “In many cases, xanthelasma acts as a visible marker of systemic cholesterol imbalance or early atherosclerosis, rather than an isolated skin condition” : Dr G Dimpu Edwin Jonathan,. How strong is the link? Does one patch mean danger?. The association is clinically meaningful and well-documented, as per the cardiologist. Importantly, the increased cardiovascular risk appears to be independent of traditional risk factors such as age, smoking, or even measured cholesterol levels.. Story continues below this ad. “Xanthelasma is believed to reflect cholesterol deposition within blood vessel walls, similar to plaque buildup in coronary arteries,” Dr Jonathan explains. “When we see xanthelasma, we consider it a red flag for accelerated vascular ageing.”. In other words, plaque may already be forming silently.. What if cholesterol levels are normal?. Surprisingly, xanthelasma can appear even when routine cholesterol tests look normal. This may indicate hidden or residual risks such as:. Abnormal cholesterol particle size or function (not detected in basic tests). Genetic lipid disorders. Reduced HDL efficiency. Incre

The morning change that transformed a nutritionist’s cortisol and blood sugar: ‘My gut health thanks me so much every day’

Nutritionist Apurva Agarwal recently spoke about one particular change in her morning routine that has benefited her a lot. “This one change in my morning routine has helped me achieve my goal weight, given me the skin of my dreams. I have started consuming these beautiful, soaked nuts,” she shared in a post on Instagram.. Her morning tray includes 3 figs, which “help me in my digestion”. “I have not been constipated for a while, and I love it. Black raisins help in purifying blood. So, anyone dealing with an acne issue, this is going to be your best friend. Soaked almonds and soaked walnuts benefits we all know. These are a powerhouse of antioxidants. If you start consuming these, you are going to feel a lot healthier and stronger throughout the day. Your energy levels are going to be great. You will not have sugar cravings because these are good fats and good sources of protein in the morning. They are delicious and so filling.”. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. Taking her claim as a cue, we verified it with experts.. Dt Amreen Sheikh, chief dietitian, KIMS Hospitals, Thane, said soaked figs and raisins contain high amounts of fibre, which help stimulate bowel movements and keep the digestive system active. “Soaking makes them soft and easy to digest. The fibre also serves as a nutrient for beneficial gut bacteria, which helps with easy digestion and prevents bloating. When the gut is emptied in the morning, the body feels light and refreshed,” said Sheikh.. Sheikh explained that the body requires a constant supply of energy after an overnight fast. “Almonds and walnuts contain healthy fats that delay the absorption of sugar and prevent sudden highs and lows in energy levels. When energy levels are maintained smoothly, the body remains calm, and stress hormones are less active. This helps the body remain alert and focused throughout the day.”. Does this combination assist with weight management and decreasing cravings?. Story continues below this ad. Sheikh said that the combination works because it is a mix of fibre, natural carbohydrates, and healthy fats. “This combination keeps the stomach full for a longer period of time and suppresses the need to snack on unhealthy foods later. The stable blood sugar levels also decrease the sudden hunger pangs, which helps with better portion control and weight management.”. View this post on Instagram. Sameera Reddy, Akshai Varde recall their first ‘fun’ meeting: ‘He thought I was Lara Dutta!’

Sameera Reddy and Akshai Varde recall how the latter thought she was Lara Dutta (Photo: Sameera Reddy/Instagram; Lara Dutta/Instagram). Sameera Reddy and Akshai Varde make for a sweet couple. In fact, how they met is even more adorable. Recalling the incident, Sameera and Akshai shared in a conversation, “The way we met is the fun part. I saw Akshai on a shoot. I was riding a bike for my film Tez‘s promotions. And this big bike came in for a PR shoot. And Akshai was on the bike,” Sameera said.. “Akshai continued, “It was from our company. I got an opportunity to do a promotion. Someone called and said… there’s this actress, and they are doing some promos. Send your bike, you will get good credits. He said the actress is Sameera Reddy. In my head, I am picturing Lara Dutta. You know, I was not connected.”. First meetings can be fun (Photo: Freepik). Laughing out loud, Sameera remarked, “He thought I was Lara Dutta. That’s why he came to the shoot.”. In his defence, Akshai told Hauterrfly, “No, no…It didn’t matter to me…who it was…When I reached, she is the actress….then I realised I was wrong…It doesn’t look like the person I was picturing.”. When Sameera Reddy shared that her husband, Akshai Varde, showed up to meet her thinking she was Lara Dutta, it sounded like a funny, harmless mix-up. He had already formed a picture in his mind — and reality did not match it. But what makes this story powerful is not the confusion, said Delnna Rrajesh, psychotherapist and life coach.. View this post on Instagram. The human mind is constantly creating images. Before we even meet someone, we imagine:. * how they will look. * how they will behave. * how we will feel around them. According to Delnna, this is called psychological projection — where we place our expectations, past experiences, and fantasies onto someone we barely know. And this is where most relationships begin to go wrong. “From a psychotherapy and emotional healing perspective, people don’t struggle with finding love. They struggle with letting go of the version of love they have already created,” said Delnna.. It is what happened after that that all of us should take back. “He stayed. He connected. And he allowed the moment to unfold without being attached to his expectation. This reflects one of the deepest truths in dating psychology and relationship psychology — we don’t meet people as they are… we meet them through the lens of our projections,” reflected Delnna.

‘Main sabko bolti hoon ki bhai mujhe…: How Shilpa Shirodkar stays busy by breaking the biggest professional taboo; expert calls her approach ‘a good one’

Why Shilpa Shirodkar openly asking for work isn’t desperate (Source: Express Archive Photo). Pursuing career opportunities often involves more than just talent; it requires confidence and effective networking. Actor Shilpa Shirodkar, who recently returned to acting after a brief hiatus, has spoken openly about how she approaches her professional journey with energy and determination. She is clear about one thing: she is not shy to ask for work when opportunities arise.. Reflecting on her recent projects in an interview with Instant Bollywood, Shilpa said, “Meri film Jatadhara release hui November mein (My film Jatadhara released in November), which didn’t do very well. But there’s this other project, I’m doing a web series. I’m working on another film, and I’m waiting for its official announcement. So, yes, touchwood, by the grace of God, I’m busy till the end of the year.” This demonstrates her proactive approach to maintaining a steady professional rhythm despite setbacks.. Shilpa also emphasised the importance of openly communicating her availability and willingness to work. She shared, “Agar mere paas kisika number hai ya main kisiko miloon toh main sabko bolti hoon ki bhai mujhe kaam chahiye toh kuch acha hoga toh dedo (If I have someone’s number or if I meet somebody, then I tell everyone that I need work, so if you have something good, then consider me for it)… There is no harm. Agar kaam chahiye aur agar koi dilwa sakta hai (If you want work and if someone can give it to you) or can do something for you, toh (then) that person should at least know na.”. Benefits of directly asking for opportunities. Gurleen Baruah, organisational psychologist at That Culture Thing, tells indianexpress.com, “Shilpa Shirodkar’s approach is a good one. It’s direct, honest, and clear. There’s really no harm in asking for work like this. A lot of people hold back due to fear, but asking is something fully in your control, so it makes sense to act on it.”. She continues, “It often opens doors because people may be willing to help, but they won’t know unless you say it. It also shows clarity, initiative, and seriousness about your goals. At the end of the day, you are simply putting yourself out there, and that’s how opportunities start.”. Most effective ways for individuals to approach contacts or potential mentors for opportunities. Networking is powerful, Baruah says, but many people treat it as transactional thinking, ‘what can I get?’ “That’s where they go wrong. Good networking is about being a giver – helping others, connecting people, and sharing information. That’s how you build recall and trust, and your name comes up even in rooms you are not in,” mentions Baruah.. At the same time, she shares that boundaries are important. “In the book Give and Take by Adam Grant, he points to research showing that givers with boundaries tend to do best. They help others, but not at the cost of being taken a
