BJD walks out of Rajya Sabha over BJP’s Nishikant Dubey remarks on party founder

 The Biju Janata Dal (BJD) on Monday walked out of the Rajya Sabha over remarks made by Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) lawmaker Nishikant Dubey about the party’s founder and former Odisha chief minister Biju Patnaik.. As soon as the house gathered, BJD’s Sasmit Patra said, “We want to place on record our serious protest against the disparaging, false and concocted statements by Nishikant Dubey against Biju Patnaik”.. “This is the level that the ruling party has fallen to… this is utterly shameful,” he said, announcing that the party was walking out.. On Sunday, Patra resigned from the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Communications & IT in which is headed by Dubey, in protest against the disparaging remarks against Patnaik.. Although the BJD was not a part of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), as a neutral party, it supported the government in key legislative issues.. Meanwhile, Dubey said he did not make any allegations against Patnaik.. “Biju Patnaik ji was a tall freedom fighter, and the BJP showed full respect to him… When Congress did injustice with Biju Babu, Jan Sangh and BJP stood by him… I repeat that I am releasing a series on the acts of Nehru-Gandhi family. Tell me, which allegation did I level at Biju Babu in my tweet?… If anyone is hurt by what I have written in my tweets, then I can only try to make them understand,” he told news agency ANI.

Tamil Nadu CM MK Stalin files nomination from Kolathur constituency in Chennai

 Tamil Nadu Chief Minister and DMK President M K Stalin on Monday filed his nomination from Kolathur Assembly constituency in Chennai for the April 13 election.. The DMK has announced candidates for 164 constituencies. (PTI File Photo). After filing his papers, Stalin expressed full confidence that people would hand him a spectacular victory for the 4th time in a row in the Kolathur segment.. Stalin had successfully contested polls from Kolathur constituency in 2011, 2016 and 2021 Assembly elections.. Soon after filing his papers, Stalin briefly held a road show and waved to the people and sought support. The DMK chief also released a book on his achievements for the Kolathur constituency.. Accompanied by senior party leaders, including HR & CE Minister P K Sekar Babu, the DMK president arrived at the designated election office here and submitted his papers on the first day of filing of nominations for the April 23 Assembly election to the state.. On Sunday, Stalin unveiled his party poll manifesto outlining the path for development and the goals.. While the opposition AIADMK has nominated Chennai Corporation councillor P Santhanakrishnan to contest against the Chief Minister, actor-politician Vijay-led TVK has fielded V S Babu to take on Stalin in a triangular contest.. Stalin has been nurturing the constituency, transforming it into a model one in the state. Infrastructure development, welfare initiatives, and improving school infrastructure and amenities for public were among his major focus areas.. Besides the modernised library-cum-co-working spaces at Periyar Nagar and Jawahar Nagar for ₹4.75 crore, a modern market complex on Paper Mills Road for ₹19.30 crore was inaugurated recently featuring 74 commercial shops, lifts, and parking to support small traders in the constituency.. IoT based monitoring and odor control system for sewage pumping stations in Kolathur, apart, women’s gymnasium in Jawahar Nagar, and 840 housing tenements at Gowthamapuram are among his numerous achievements.

Tamil Nadu polls: TVK’s Vijay files nomination from Perambur, Trichy East

 With Tamil Nadu Assembly elections nearing closer, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) President Vijay on Monday filed his nomination from the Perambur and Trichy East constituencies.. Tamil Nadu will go to the polls in a single phase on April 23, covering a total of 234 constituencies in the State. Counting is scheduled for May 4.. A day earlier, Vijay unveiled the party’s manifesto for the upcoming elections, promising “anti-drug protection zones” and a monthly assistance for students.. Addressing a press conference in Chennai, Vijay stressed his vision for a drug-free and self-reliant Tamil Nadu. He said anti-drug protection zones” will be established in all schools and colleges across the state. “Our primary goal is to create a drug-free Tamil Nadu,” he asserted.. He also assured that all government examinations will be conducted on time without delays.. Vijay announced a monthly assistance of ₹4,000 for graduates and ₹2,000 for diploma holders.. Outlining his broader vision, he said, “Our long-term goal is to transform youth from job seekers into job creators.” He promised the “Local Employment for Local People” scheme, stating that steps will be taken to ensure 75 per cent of jobs in Tamil Nadu are given to Tamils.. Further, Vijay unveiled the “Creative Entrepreneurs Scheme”, aimed at transforming Tamil Nadu into a global hub for creators. Under this initiative, efforts will be made to develop 1.5 lakh creators into entrepreneurs, along with the establishment of 500 creative schools across the state.. The main electoral contest in the State is expected between the Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK)-led Secular Progressive Alliance (SPA), which also includes Congress, DMDK, and the VCK, and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA), led by AIADMK with the BJP and Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK) as allies.. Actor-turned-politician Vijay is making his electoral debut with TVK, attempting to turn the upcoming elections into a three-way contest.. Vijay will be going against DMK’s sitting MLA RD Shekar, who will contest from Perambur. He is also pitted against the sitting MLA and DMK candidate Inigo Irudayaraj in Trichy East. (ANI)

Retired brigadier, out on morning walk in Dehradun, killed after being hit by stray bullet in road rage firing

 Dehradun: A retired brigadier was allegedly shot dead after being hit by a stray bullet during a firing incident triggered by an overtaking dispute between two car occupants on Mussoorie Road on Monday morning, police said.. Police said the Fortuner lost control after the firing and crashed into a tree near a government primary school in Johri village. (HT Photo). According to officials, the incident occurred around 6.50 am near Malsi, when the occupants of a Delhi-registered Toyota Fortuner and a Mahindra Scorpio N got into an argument over not yielding the right of way. The dispute escalated, following which the Scorpio occupants allegedly chased the Fortuner and opened fire at its tyres in an attempt to stop the vehicle.. Superintendent of Police (City) Pramod Kumar said the deceased, identified as K Joshi (70), a resident of Rajpur, was out on his morning stroll when the incident happened.. “During the firing, the retired brigadier, who was out on a morning walk along the road, was accidentally hit by a bullet. He was rushed to a hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment,” he said.. Police said the Fortuner lost control after the firing and crashed into a tree near a government primary school in Johri village. Following the crash, the Scorpio occupants allegedly assaulted those inside the Fortuner and damaged the vehicle. Two persons travelling in the Fortuner sustained injuries and were taken to a hospital.. Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Dehradun and other officials rushed to the spot and later visited the hospital to gather details.. “The accused fled the scene after the incident. A district-wide intensive checking is underway to trace them. CCTV footage from nearby routes is also being scanned,” Kumar said.

BJP president Nitin Nabin resigns as Bihar MLC after election to Rajya Sabha

 Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) national president Nitin Nabin on Monday resigned from his position as a member of the Bihar legislative council after being elected to the Rajya Sabha on March 16.. Under the ‘Prohibition of Simultaneous Membership Rules, 1950’ (framed under Articles 101 and 190 of the Constitution), a person elected to both Parliament and a state legislature must vacate their seat in the state legislature within 14 days of election to the Rajya Sabha.. Nabin announced his resignation on social media, addressing his constituents from Bankipur in Bihar, as he reflected on his political journey. He was first elected in a bypoll necessitated by the demise of his father, a legislator.. “After the sudden demise of my father in January 2006, the party gave me the opportunity to contest the by-election from Patna West, and on April 27, 2006, I was elected for the first time from the Patna West constituency, marking the beginning of my social and political life,” he said.. Recounting his journey, he said that over the past 20 years he made continuous efforts to nurture, beautify and advance the constituency of his father, Late Nabin Kishore Prasad Sinha.. “I have always worked with dedication for the development of my area and Bihar. As a result, the people here have blessed me by electing me as their representative to the House for five consecutive terms. Whether inside the House or outside, I have used both platforms to raise the voice of my area and the people of Bihar and to find ways to resolve their problems,” he said.. A five-term legislator, Nabin also served as a minister in the state cabinet.. “I have always said that the people not only shared their problems with me, but also showed me the path to solving those problems. The workers have held my hand like a brother, a family member, and a guardian, bringing me to this position today. I assure the people of Patna and Bihar that I will always honor the familial affection they have given me,” he wrote.. In his message to his constituency, he said he would use his new role to remain committed to the development of the area and Bihar.. “The unbreakable bond I share with my workers and the people of Bihar will endure forever, always providing me with new energy, inspiration and guidance,” he added.
