That won’t be announced until towards the end of May but we already have a pretty good idea of the contenders, based on players’ performances so far this campaign.. Arsenal are leading the way in the title race and should they win, the likes of defender Gabriel and midfelder Declan Rice will surely be in contention.. But there have been other standout performers this season, including the likes of Manchester United’s Bruno Fernandes, and perhaps somewhat more unexpected stars like Igor Thiago and Antoine Semenyo will likely be in the mix.. BBC Sport take a closer look at who could be in line for the award before asking its reporters who they would pick.. You also get the chance to vote for your winner below.. Does the award usually go to a Premier League champion?. In short – not always.. It has been that way for the past five seasons, with Liverpool’s Mohamed Salah the most recent winner and Manchester City players taking the award from 2020-21 to 2023-24.. However, prior to that the split was more even with 11 recipients from non-Premier League winners compared to 10 for players from the champions.. Who are the leading contenders?. Arsenal are in a strong position to win the Premier League this season and Rice has been a key player behind their title charge.. No Gunners player has registered more league assists than his five this season, while he is also ranked top for number of chances and big chances created.. Rice is the favourite to be crowned player of the season but pushing him hard for the award is Manchester United captain Fernandes.. This season only Manchester City striker Erling Haaland has contributed to more goals than than the Portuguese midfielder, who has eight goals and 16 assists in 28 games.. Fernandes is on course to break the record for the highest number of assists provided across a single Premier League season.. That tally is 20 – a total which has been reached by two players – Thierry Henry for Arsenal in 2002-03 and Manchester City’s Kevin de Bruyne in 2019-20.. [embedded content]. Other contenders include Arsenal defender Gabriel, who has been a vital player for the Gunners at the back as well as chipping in with some important goals, including a 90th-minute winner at Newcastle back in September.. Meanwhile, Semenyo starred for Bournemouth before slotting in seamlessly to the Manchester City attack following his move to Pep Guardiola’s side in January, while Igor Thiago has shone up front for Brentford.. Now, Anthony Barry is preparing to head to the World Cup as Thomas Tuchel’s assistant – the only Englishman in the core backroom coaching team.. For a 39-year-old, he has an incredible CV as an elite coach with prior experience at Chelsea, Bayern Munich and the Portugal and Belgium national teams.. It is one of the most remarkable rises in football.. Liverpool-born Barry describes himself as the yin to Tuchel’s yang and acknowledges their partnership can “look a bit strange at times” because of their difference in height and bakcground.. “It’s little and large from the outside,” he says, with an infectious smile that barely leaves his face during a 10-minute interview with BBC Sport.. Football Daily: Anthony Barry on Thomas Tuchel and the World Cup. Barry’s journey to working with Tuchel. Barry’s first coaching job after retiring as a player was as assistant manager at Wigan, but after impressing Frank Lampard on the Uefa Pro Licence course, he became first-team coach at Chelsea in the summer of 2020.. When Lampard was sacked in January 2021, Tuchel replaced him, retained Barry, and within months had won the Champions League.. During that time Barry had also spread his wings into international football – working as an assistant coach of the Republic of Ireland before taking the same role under Roberto Martinez – first with Belgium, then Portugal.. That has allowed him to coach at a World Cup and European Championship, while also working with global greats including Cristiano Ronaldo and Kevin de Bruyne.. Barry was reunited with Tuchel when the latter took him to Bayern Munich in 2023.. “It’s a relationship that has grown along the way,” said Barry. “In a working capacity – and then in a social way – we became closer and closer.. “We spend a lot of time together speaking, working, fighting, building teams – but he’s a person and a character I admire and I’m in awe of.”. Barry is the only English coach in Tuchel’s core support staff. He, along with Henrique Hilario, Nico Mayer and James Melbourne, has joined Tuchel in signing a new contract until 2028.. Known as an innovative and enthusiastic coach, Barry also specialises in set-pieces. A former midfielder, he wrote a dissertation as part of his Pro Licence for which he analysed 17,000 throw-ins.. But he does not buy into the narrative that set-pieces will be more important than ever at a World Cup that will feature drinks breaks – effectively splitting the game into quarters.. “I’m not sure it will have a bigger part to play,” he said. “I think set-pieces have always been huge.. “I just think, right now, it’s really a trend – it’s really spoken about in social media. According to the New York City Police Department, two individuals on a moped approached the intersection of Moore Street and Humboldt Street in Brooklyn when the individual in the back fired a weapon multiple times, with a stray bullet striking a young girl on the sidewalk.. The NYPD has identified the 7-month-old girl as Kaori Patterson-Moore of Brooklyn. She was pronounced dead at the hospital.. The individuals fled the scene on the moped. The NYPD said one person of interest is in custody, while a manhunt is underway for the second suspect as police ask for the public’s help identifying those involved.. HOUSTON POLICE INVESTIGATE FATAL SHOOTING OF 17-YEAR-OLD AT VALENTINE’S DAY HOUSE PARTY. The shooting was believed to be gang-related, and the child was an unintended victim, according to police.. “There are no words that can mend the heartbreak this family is feeling right now,” New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani said during a news conference. “A life that had barely begun was taken in an instant.”. The shooting took place around 1:20 p.m. on a street corner where several adults and children were gathered. Police said there were no other injuries connected to the shooting.. HIGH SCHOOL ATHLETE PARALYZED AFTER TRYING TO SAVE PAL DURING LATE-NIGHT BRAWL THAT ENDED IN GUNFIRE: REPORT. Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch said the moped sped off after the shooting but crashed into an oncoming car two blocks away.
