Hurtling towards relegation – but can Port Vale shock Chelsea in FA Cup?

Image source, Getty Images. ByNeil Johnston in Burslem. BBC Sport journalist. 3 April 2026. 176 Comments. It’s the start of FA Cup quarter-final week at Port Vale and manager Jon Brady is spelling out some home truths to his players after another demoralising defeat.. “It’s just not good enough,” says the Australian. “When you have players who play really well one week and the following two weeks don’t, it’s hard to fathom.”. Since landing a money-spinning away tie against Chelsea after the headline-grabbing win over Sunderland on 8 March, Vale have lost four out of six in League One, the latest a 4-0 hammering at Wycombe Wanderers last Saturday.. Bottom of the table, 14 points from safety with just eight games left, Vale are hurtling towards relegation in their 150th anniversary year.. “I don’t care about the Chelsea game, the season cannot end soon enough,” messaged one angry fan to BBC Radio Stoke’s post-match football phone-in show Praise and Grumble after the Wycombe game.. There are, however, many who do care about Vale’s first meeting with Chelsea since 1929.. Despite the closure of Euston train station over Easter, 6,000 are travelling to Stamford Bridge for Saturday’s last-eight tie (live on BBC One and the BBC iPlayer, 17:15 BST kick-off) in the hope of seeing their side pull off the unthinkable.. “Who knows, the players might actually turn up for this one,” Jonny Hancock from Ale and the Vale, external podcast says.. Bottom of the league, magic in the cup – Port Vale’s ‘incredible’ run. 8 March. ‘I’m a Chelsea fan but my grandad was a Vale hero’. 12 March. ‘Burslem needs some love’. Port Vale are the last club standing in the FA Cup from outside the Premier League and Championship. Despite a season to forget in the league, there is genuine excitement about their best run in the competition for 72 years.. More than a dozen coaches will head to Chelsea from the Ye Olde Crown, a few minutes walk from the ground in Burslem, Stoke-on-Trent.. When Vale clinched automatic promotion from League Two last season, supporters packed the pub to celebrate and sing ‘The Wonder of You’, the Elvis Presley hit played before home games.. “I couldn’t fit anyone else in that night,” landlady Charlotte Ratcliffe recalls.. “The Vale players came in and it was so busy that they went behind the bar and started serving customers.”. Charlotte’s dad, Shane, a Port Vale season ticket holder, ran the pub up until he passed away in 2022.. “All I’ve heard from customers since Vale were drawn with Chelsea is: ‘I hope I can get a ticket’,” adds Charlotte. “It’s big for the town.”. Port Vale is not named after a specific town or borough like most clubs, with Burslem one of six towns that form part of the city of Stoke-on-Trent in Staffordshire.. In 1876 a meeting took place in Port Vale House with the idea of forming a football team. Whether the club was named after the house is unclear, external but fans are proud of their club’s identity.. Illegal migrant charged in deadly 124 mph chase that killed pregnant teen, unborn child

NEW Now you can listen to Fox News articles! The U.S. Department of Homeland Security (DHS) announced Saturday that it has issued an immigration detainer for an illegal immigrant accused of leading Ohio deputies on a high-speed chase that concluded in a crash, killing a pregnant 17-year-old girl and her unborn child while injuring another woman. Tarsem Singh, an Indian national, was recently indicted on charges of vehicular homicide, involuntary manslaughter, and reckless homicide, per DHS. He is currently held on a $1 million bond, with U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) placing an arrest detainer on him with Ohio authorities. The fatal incident occurred in Feb. A pursuit began when a Darke County Sheriff’s Office deputy spotted an SUV speeding nearly 25 mph over the limit. ‘VIRGINIA FATHER’ CHARGED WITH MURDERING INFANT DAUGHTER IS ILLEGAL ALIEN, SAYS DHS. Officials stated that the deputy tried to catch up to the SUV, allegedly driven by Singh, and paced it at 100 mph. As the deputy turned on his emergency lights for a traffic stop, the SUV fled, traveling about five miles at speeds up to 124 mph before colliding with an eastbound vehicle on a curve, per the sheriff’s office. The deputy promptly alerted dispatch about the crash and checked for injuries, discovering that pregnant 17-year-old Ashlee Holmes, Singh’s passenger, had died after being ejected from the vehicle, according to local outlet WDTN. EXCLUSIVE: ILLEGAL IMMIGRANT RELEASED UNDER BIDEN ‘CATCH-AND-RELEASE’ ALLEGEDLY KILLS DRIVER IN POLICE CHASE. Singh was airlifted by CareFlight to Miami Valley Hospital. The female driver of the eastbound vehicle, who was conscious and alert despite her injuries, was transported to Reid Hospital in Richmond, Indiana, via Union City, per the sheriff’s office. Officials noted the pursuit lasted under three minutes from initiation to crash. The reason Holmes was in Singh’s vehicle remains unknown. “This is yet another tragic reminder of why illegal aliens should not be driving cars on America’s roads,” DHS acting assistant secretary Lauren Bis wrote in a statement. This illegal immigrant’s reckless behavior has resulted in the death of a 17-year-old woman and her unborn child. Singh reportedly crossed into the country illegally via California’s southern border in February 2017 and was detained prior to a judge ordering his release on bond. Comedians tell ministers lack of funding is no laughing matter

Comedians inform ministers that insufficient funding is a serious issue. Eight hours earlier. Richard Wheeler, political reporter. Getty Images Creative. Britain is renowned globally for its comedy, yet industry leaders warn that the “next generation of comedy voices” will face challenges breaking through without increased funding and incentives. Although comedy ranks among the nation’s most popular entertainment forms, it has historically lacked assured government backing. Despite star comedians filling arenas and sitcoms attracting millions of viewers, grassroots venues—where emerging comics develop their skills—and production companies require support to nurture the upcoming talent wave. Prominent comedy figures have urged the government to recognize it as a distinct art form, enhancing access to funding and policy support. Additional discussions are anticipated, with Culture Minister Ian Murray expressing full support for collaborating with the sector to “better understand opportunities for government intervention.” He also urged comedy to consider a voluntary ticket levy like the music industry, where major venues reinvest in grassroots efforts. Arts Council England (ACE) maintains it already provides comedy support but has no intention of altering its funding structure. Many attendees from last month’s meeting believe more action is essential for an industry that permeates daily life in diverse ways. Comedian Tom Walker, known for the fictional journalist Jonathan Pie, argued the government must view comedy “as an important cultural element from grassroots to BBC sitcoms.” He advocated reframing stand-up comedians and industry professionals as “small businesses” and entrepreneurs deserving recognition and rewards. Ro Dodgson stated that comedy is “often based on risk,” and financially struggling clubs and promoters are less willing to gamble on new acts. The comedian argued that if the government provided funding to clubs “as almost a form of insurance” to continue experimenting with new acts and nurturing emerging talent, “then we’d have an industry that can sustain itself.” Dodgson added: “If you don’t get an influx of diverse perspectives at all times, comedy won’t stay relevant.” Comedian Carly Smallman stated that recognizing comedy as an art form would unlock support opportunities available to other creative sectors. Smallman remarked: “The backing music receives, the backing theatre receives—comedy isn’t eligible because many decision-makers don’t consider it legitimate. But it obviously is legitimate; it’s a massive industry, and we’ve just had to make do without that support.” Neil Bennett/Baby Cow Productions/PA.

Daughters’ relentless search shatters ‘overdose’ claim, leads to arrest in mom’s 1992 murder

NEW Now you can listen to Fox News articles! Over three decades after a Washington mother was discovered dead in her home, authorities have arrested a suspect in the long-dormant case. In November 1992, Janice Randle was found deceased on her bed in her Graham, Washington residence, with her infant daughter in a nearby crib. At that time, her husband, James Randle, informed authorities that she might have died from a drug overdose, pointing to her previous use of painkillers. The couple was separated and in the midst of a divorce. The case was originally handled as a death investigation and potential overdose. Autopsy findings later showed no drugs in Randle’s system, leading investigators to reclassify the case as a homicide. Even with this change, evidence remained scarce, and detectives could not build probable cause for an arrest. The case went unsolved for decades. “Realtor’s Cold Case Murder Solved After 133 Years, Police Say.” The investigation was reopened in recent years when family members provided new information, including reports of purported confessions by James Randle. Those leads offered investigators a new angle—and a fresh way ahead. Officials state the revitalized probe ultimately provided probable cause to arrest the now 68-year-old suspect, who resided in a care facility in Everett, Washington.
