A crazed man was shot by police after wielding a 13-inch kitchen knife outside a grocery store, the New York Police Department said.. “Once again, we are reminded of the dangers that our officers confront every time they put on their uniform. And this morning was no different,” Inspector Andrew Natiw, the executive officer of the Patrol Bureau of Manhattan North, said in a Monday morning news conference.. According to the NYPD, on Monday at 1:15 a.m., a 53-year-old got into a verbal fight with another person inside the City Fresh Market on East 120th Street and Third Avenue.. Multiple employees had to physically remove him from the store after he became “irate and disorderly,” the NYPD said. The man returned to the store a short time later with a large kitchen knife in his hand, banging on the window, according to police.. GOT A TIP?. Authorities said that one of the officers shot the suspect and immediately requested EMS and rendered aid to the 53-year-old suspect.. The NYPD declined to provide a name of the suspect. Police said the man has a history of prior arrests and was known to law enforcement.. Investigators recovered approximately seven shell casings at the scene. The incident remains under investigation.

An exclusive high-end private school in the Los Angeles area has been rocked by a lawsuit alleging that three water polo teammates, including a star player who is the son of a well-known film director, racially and sexually abused a teammate for years.. The civil lawsuit filed by Aidan Romain, who was a minor and water polo player at the swanky Harvard-Westlake School at the time of the alleged incidents, says he was repeatedly subjected to persistent racist and sexual misgivings at the hands of his teammates.. One teammate, Lucca Van Der Woude, is named in the lawsuit, along with the school itself, school president Richard B. Commons and boys water polo program head Jack Glover. Van Der Woude is the son of Thomas “Basti” Van Der Woude, a high-profile Hollywood assistant director of shows including “Fear the Walking Dead,” “Westworld” and current hit “Ballard.”. The younger Van Der Woude is considered a top Olympic prospect, and at one point was a prized recruit to play water polo at UCLA, one of the most elite college programs in the country. It is unclear what his present recruitment status is with the team, but the lawsuit against him alleges shocking behavior.. ELITE MASSACHUSETTS BOARDING SCHOOL ROCKED BY TEACHER SCANDAL AND INSTITUTIONAL COVER-UP ALLEGATIONS. “From August 2022 until February 2024, Plaintiff Aidan Romain (then a minor) was sexually assaulted, harassed, and humiliated primarily by three Harvard-Westlake water polo teammates – often in the presence of Harvard-Westlake agents and employees,” the lawsuit begins.. The lawsuit says that in 2022, Romain was the only freshman to make the varsity water polo team at Harvard-Westlake, but that abuse at the hands of Van Der Woude began during his very first practice, when the defendant allegedly “digitally penetrated” him underwater.. “The abuse was not spontaneous. It was part of a years-long culture in which violence and humiliation were normalized and facilitated through the school’s coaching staff and administration,” the suit says. “At Harvard-Westlake, sexualized misconduct was treated as ritual, and silence was the price of inclusion. Speaking out was betrayal and survival meant staying quiet.”. COLLEGE FRESHMAN DIED AFTER FRATERNITY HAZING LED TO ‘HORRIFIC’ ABUSE, FAMILY SAYS. According to the lawsuit, Romain was also subject to use of the N-word consistently.. In another “disturbing display of racism,” Van Der Woude and another teammate who is not named as a defendant in the lawsuit allegedly “began whipping Plaintiff with a rope and then an elastic band, making references to slavery as they demanded that Plaintiff ‘get back to work!’ while striking Plaintiff.”. Van Der Woude was arrested in 2024 and later admitted in juvenile court to “‘sexual penetration with a foreign object (digital penetration) against a minor’ as part of a plea agreement with prosecutors,” according to the suit. On Saturday, Emily Scarratt will return to Allianz Stadium in a new capacity compared to her role during England’s World Cup triumph in September. The Red Roses’ all-time leading points scorer, who had been player-coaching at Loughborough Lightning, retired after England’s final win against Canada. Due to injuries and intense competition in the centres, arguably England’s greatest women’s player was relegated to serving as the team’s water carrier on the sidelines. In that position, she stayed linked to the coaching staff through an earpiece, relaying key insights to the team. She now rejoins for the 70 Women’s Six Nations as England’s new lead attack and backs coach, succeeding former assistant Lou Meadows. With her ex-teammate Sarah Hunter as the defence coach, England is nurturing two of the sport’s top talents amid the Red Roses’ ongoing wait for a female head coach. Asked about the benefits of women coaching women’s teams, Scarratt told BBC Sport: “It’s massive. I’ve spent much of my career coached by men—excellent men with vast experience who bring valuable perspectives from their backgrounds into our game. When asked if head coach John Mitchell is deliberately seeking to advance talented female coaches, Scarratt said to BBC Sport: “I don’t know if Mitch [Mitchell] will admit it or not, but I think it has been part of his master plan all along. There are a few of us who have only just recently retired.” There are also a few veteran players who, I’m certain, would be eager to stay involved with the RFU or take up coaching roles somewhere. “He [John Mitchell] understood that, along with [RFU head of women’s performance] Charlie Hayter, in terms of future planning.”
