Chicago alderman says police are ‘handcuffed’ from stopping teen takeovers under Mayor Brandon Johnson

If the mayor does not take action, the city will be in for a long, brutal summer of teen street takeovers. He said that policies in Chicago prevent the police from handling teen takeovers correctly. Lopez said that he did not think Mayor Brandon Johnson was doing enough to curb these activities. “What we’ve seen is that Chicago has become a destination for illegal street takesovers, where hundreds of youths are encouraged to descend upon a location. Whether it’s illegal street takesovers with our cars or other criminal activities, people know to visit here. He said, “They know they can get by with it and they know our police are often handcuffed from stopping and intervening at these events.” FOLLOW THE FOX TRULY CRIME TEAMS ON XLopez stated that Chicago police officers were not allowed to “fully interact” with those taking part in teen takeovers. Lopez said that “we’ve never done the necessary to authorize our police officers to fully engage” with these individuals. They can’t box them in or corral them to prevent them from escaping, arrest them, or impound their vehicle as required by law. “We have never looked into who is behind these social media promotions.” We know they are spread on Facebook, Snapchat, Instagram and other social media, but we do little to find out who is behind the posts. ABC 7 News reported that a video taken in Chicago’s Gresham area over the weekend showed a large crowd surrounding a burned-out car. One person was seen throwing a piece of debris into the car that was engulfed by flames and exploded seconds later. Johnson wrote: “Chicago there are credible reports that a teen-trend is forming in Hyde Park today,” Johnson wrote to X. “Parents be aware of your children’s plans for this evening. Do not allow your children to go to one of these gatherings. During that teen-led takeover, three curfews were violated and a 16-year-old girl arrested for unlawful possession of a gun and disorderly conduct. “Yeah, it’s bad. The hood looks terrible.
