As part of an extensive cost-cutting program, Jaguar Land Rover has launched a voluntary layoff program for its salaried staff and managers.
Tata Motors, the vehicle maker owned by Tata Motors, confirmed over the weekend the voluntary departure scheme for its white-collar employees as they move to reduce their global break-even threshold from 300,000. vehicles per year. Unconfirmed British reports suggest that the 2-year overhaul of its operations could affect up to 4,000 positions in the U.K., but JLR has noted that the hourly assembly workers will be excluded from the program.
A spokesperson for JLR told media outlets that “we have completely transformed our product range over the last three years.” To achieve this phase, JLR must simplify its organization further, increase efficiency and improve resilience, while also adapting to the changing global market conditions.
Ford boosts Lincoln production in the US as it phases out imports from China
Restructuring is a response to increasing financial and operational challenges on international markets. The 10% tariff on vehicle imports to the U.S. has a negative impact on profit margins. JLR is facing increasing competition in its home market from cheaper Chinese electric vehicles, such as Chery’s Jaecoo 7 crossover SUV.
This cost-cutting drive also follows a cyberattack that caused JLR to stop production at several facilities in Europe late last year. The attack contributed to a drop of 27% in output, and a drag estimated to be $2.5 billion or £1.9 billion on the British economy.
Jonathan Reynolds, the U.K. business secretary confirmed that he will meet JLR CEO PB Balaji as well as representatives of Unite the Union.
Reynolds said to the BBC that a company of JLR’s size will have different numbers of employees at various stages of its business cycle. We need to talk about this if we want to ensure that over time the company has the right workforce to be competitive. The government won’t be providing support to people if they are bailing them out.
Sharon Graham, Unite general secretary stated that leaders of the union will participate in talks with JLR executives so as to protect hourly workers from mandatory job loss.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (AP) – They managed to pull off one of largest crypto thefts ever in U.S. History by defrauding a stranger of over $240,000,000 worth of bitcoin. The thieves tried to conceal their digital footprints by executing a complex scheme of laundering the money.
The party began.
They went on an extravagant spending spree to celebrate the August 2024 theft. The scammers bought sports cars and flew in private jets. They hired security guards to protect their mansions. Malone Lam (22 years old), an alleged leader, spent $569,000 at one nightclub in Los Angeles.
The FBI arrested Lam a month later on suspicion that Lam had organized an “social engineering attack” on a Washington, D.C. resident. The hearing for Lam’s plea deal is scheduled to take place on Tuesday. Lam is an 8th-grade dropout who hails from Singapore. The government would use his conviction as a stepping stone in its investigation.
These charges are an extreme case of a form of cybercrime that is becoming more common. The FBI received nearly half as many complaints of cryptocurrency fraud in 2025. Meanwhile, the Republican administration under Donald Trump abandoned its regulatory efforts to crack down on this volatile industry.
The Justice Department disbanded its unit that prosecuted crypto-related crime last year. Crypto companies who complained about unfair treatment under Democratic President Joe Biden are now enjoying Trump’s government-free approach. Trump made $1.2 billion in revenue from his crypto business in 2025.
Allison Nixon is a cyber security researcher who spent many years tracing The Com, a subculture underground of hackers united by “insane amounts of money” generated through crypto fraud. She advocates that more resources be allocated to law enforcement in order to pursue them.
She said that if we do not seriously increase our resources in order to eliminate these individuals and to act faster, the disease will spread.
Scammers stole millions through a’social engineering heist’
On August 18, 2024, a man named “Victim Seven” was in Washington at his home when the phone rang. First, a Google employee called to ask about attempts at hacking his account. The second caller, who claimed to represent the Gemini cryptocurrency exchange, informed the man that a malware had been installed on his wallet.
According to prosecutors, the callers convinced him to give them access to Google Drive. They also revealed security codes which allowed Lam to steal over 4,100 Bitcoin. The prosecutors said that Veer Chetal, Jeandiel serrano and Lam targeted him because he is a long-time cryptocurrency investor and was wealthy.
According to ZachXBT, a private investigator who specializes in cryptocurrency crime and has a large following on YouTube, a private video recording was made when the two friends realized the amount of money that they had just stolen.
Oh, my god! “Bro, bro, I am going to go spaz!” said a voice in the video.
After stealing the man’s money, they hired specialists in money laundering to convert it into cash by using multiple exchange platforms.
The friends met on online gaming forums. This was not their first attempt at social engineering. According to prosecutors, they had used a similar strategy in other multimillion dollar thefts that took place since 2023.
Serrano, who was renting a home in Encino, California, for $47,500 a month, failed to hide his IP address, and prosecutors claim that he used it to create an account at a cryptocurrency trading exchange where he held nearly $30,000,000 of stolen crypto. Investigators were able to link the IP address with a house in Encino California that Serrano rented for $47,000 a month.
Spending lavishly quickly attracted attention
Serrano, who was on vacation in the Maldives at the time investigators identified Serrano as a possible suspect. Authorities say Lam and his friends were in Los Angeles where they spent more than $4 million in nightclubs within a month. Chetal gave his parents a Lamborghini and hidden a duffel with $5000 in cash inside their washing machine.
The news of the couple’s windfall spread quickly among crypto scammers. Chetal and her parents had just won a big sum of money when they were stopped by masked men in Danbury. They forced the family out of the car with a baseball batter, pushed them into a van, bound their hands, and forced the father to get out.
Miami-based captors had planned to leverage Chetal’s family in order to get him give up his portion of stolen cryptocurrency. The ransom plan fell apart after witnesses alerted police who arrested the carjackers.
On September 9, 2024 the FBI searched Chetal’s Brunswick apartment and discovered $37,000,000 in crypto stolen from him. The FBI accepted his cooperation in their investigation.
Lam attracted attention for his extravagant spending in clubs, and he threw handbags valued at tens or hundreds of thousands to women in crowds. According to FBI, he also bought a watch worth $2 million and 30 luxury cars including Porsches and Lamborghinis.
William Hart said, “This luxurious lifestyle of which many young people could only dream was built on the foundation of fraud” during a sentencing hearing of a co-defendant for money laundering.
‘Ferris Bueller gone bad’
Serrano was arrested by FBI agents at Los Angeles International Airport in 2024 while wearing a watch worth $500,000. Prosecutors said that Serrano initially claimed innocence, but later admitted to possessing roughly $20,000,000 of stolen crypto belonging to the D.C. resident.
On the same day that Serrano was arrested, Lam was also taken into custody at his Miami home. The indictment states that an off-duty officer of law enforcement had alerted Lam to the fact that authorities would be arresting him.
According to Lam’s indictment, he told his associates on an recorded phone call that “we always discussed what it would feel like if I went down but we never imagined it would turn out this crazy.”
A prosecutor gave a summary of Lam’s lavish expenditures that shocked the judge at his first court appearance.
The U.S. magistrate Alicia Valle, referring the protagonist from the 1986 film “Ferris Bueller’s Day Off”, said: “I only thought of Ferris Bueller going bad.”
The swindling continued even after Lam was captured. Ferro used funds stolen from Lam to pay for his legal fees. Ferro pleaded guilty last year to racketeering charges.
Judgement Day
18 defendants are charged. Lam will be the eleventh person to enter a guilty plea. A prosecutor told Lam that on his first appearance in court, he estimated that his sentencing guideline would suggest a minimum of 14 years for a conviction.
Three of Lam’s co-conspirators have already been sentenced by U.S. district judge Colleen Kollar Kotelly. She gave two money-launderers prison sentences of about six years.
Chetal has pleaded guilty in November 2024 to charges of conspiracy and is awaiting sentencing. Serrano’s charges remain pending.
Tucker Desmond was given probation after pleading guilty to the destruction of evidence relating to other criminals’ crimes. Desmond, who apologized for his actions at the March sentencing hearing, said he was “obsessed with the idea of success” rather than becoming an individual that worked hard.
Ferro refused to speak in court at his May sentencing. Kevin Wilson described his co-defendants to the court as “young mischievous kids,” but the Judge didn’t accept this as an excuse.

Almost 16% of the units that are deemed affordable by the city remain empty.
Davis, 49 said, “I’m not making enough money to buy anything. I earn a few hundred dollars per month.” I just try to keep swimming uphill.
In the United States, the poorest Americans face the greatest shortage of affordable housing. According to state housing agencies, the vast majority of affordable housing in recent years has been financed for people earning at least 50% of a region’s median household income.
Rents are approaching market prices in some cities, causing an increase in vacant units. As a result, apartments designated as affordable are left empty by the poorest among the poor.
Some people find themselves in a desperate situation, unable to afford a home.
Housing options are limited for the poorest.
According to the National Low Income Housing Coalition’s latest annual report, there are only 4 million rental housing units that can be rented by households with extremely low incomes.
People with incomes below federal poverty guidelines — under $16,000 per year for a household of one — or 30 percent of median income in the area are considered to be low-income households. About a quarter (25%) of U.S. households rent. This includes many low-wage workers, elderly people, and disabled individuals living on fixed incomes.
The report states that about three quarters of households with extremely low income renters pay more than half their earnings on utilities and rent, leaving them little money for other essentials.
The Low-Income Housing Tax Credit, a federal tax credit program that provides developers with credits in exchange for maintaining low rents for at least thirty years, is only financing about 12% of affordable housing units in 2024.
Most of the grants are given to those who earn at least half an area’s AMI, which is its median income. This is a person in Austin earning $47,000 per year, compared to a person with a very low income earning less than $28,000.
Since its inception 40 years ago, the program has funded nearly 4,000,000 affordable housing units across the country. Some experts, however, say that it is inefficient and costs more than vouchers.
The program is so complex that it has spawned an entire industry for accounting and law firms to manage it.
He said that if you want to subsidise affordable housing you should provide the funds directly to tenants.
Experts say that the two programs are complementary because the properties constructed with tax credits are required to accept vouchers, while the landlords of apartments at market rate in most states aren’t.
To this day, experts estimate that only 1 in 4 eligible families receives vouchers. The vouchers can assist the poorest in paying for housing targeted at higher-income groups. However, the waiting list can last years.
Some developers of affordable housing say it is not feasible for them to offer units at extremely low income levels without vouchers.
True Ground Housing Partners, a developer of affordable housing in Washington, D.C., provides an example. A unit that is for people earning 60% or more than the median income in the Washington, D.C. area — about $70,000 per year — generates $1,715 in monthly rent. After $1,575 of mortgage payments and operational expenses, there is only $140 left.
The math is not a lie, said Carmen Romero President and CEO. She noted that a person with incredibly low income would only pay half of the rent.
Our expenses do not make it possible for us to build a unit with 30% AMI, unless we had this enormous amount of subsidies that simply don’t exist.
Rents at market rates and affordable housing are competing
In cities such as Austin, Denver, and Portland, Oregon, the rents of 60% AMI apartments are now approaching market rates.
Some people choose to pay more money for apartments at market rate with a faster approval and less verification of income. This leaves a growing number of units that are affordable vacant.
According to CoStar, a real estate analytics and data firm, Austin’s vacancy rate is around 16% for affordable housing. There are over 4,500 vacant apartments. Around 5% is considered a healthy rate of vacancy.
LDG Development is an affordable housing developer that cited a 12 percent vacancy rate in its units with 60% AMI. Rebekah Fischer, chief portfolio officer at LDG Development, said that LDG was “in direct opposition” to the new apartments built recently in Austin.
Fischer told applicants for affordable housing that he needed to see every document they had, including every payment, bill and Venmo exchange between them and their friends.
When we are almost going for the same tenant, approval can happen in two minutes with a deal at market rate, but it is much slower when you’re looking to rent affordable housing.
According to Colorado Housing and Finance Authority, Denver has a vacancy of 13% for 60% AMI housing units that are financed through the federal tax-credit program, and 21% for 80% units. There is too little affordable housing in the city for its poorest residents.
According to the Portland Housing Bureau, Portland has over 1,700 affordable housing units that are vacant, with an overall vacancy of 7.5%. The majority of these units are reserved for households earning 60 percent AMI or $54,000, which is about $54,000 per household. Rents for single person households can be as low as $1,444 a month.
According to CoStar data shared by the Bureau, this is close to an average market rate apartment rent of $1581.
Jaiden Barbee, a Portland resident who earns about 55% of the median area income is currently on a waitlist for housing that’s affordable. He says he would pay more to get a higher-priced apartment in order to skip the long application process.
He said, “I would rather pay the extra $200 to enter a location that is easier and where I am most comfortable.” And doesn’t require “all of these hoops.”
I want to sleep at night, so I will shut the door.
Austin’s officials have set the goal to build 20,000 housing units for people with extremely low incomes between 2018-2027. This represents 17% of Austin households.
City documents indicate that only 543 houses will be built by 2024.
All 15,000 of the units that were planned to be built for people earning 60% to 80% or more than the median area income have been completed.
The Austin Housing Department responded to questions by The Associated Press that it was aware of the need to provide more housing to the poorest and that they were taking measures to achieve this, such as giving priority to proposals which included 30% units with AMI.
Davis is frustrated by the lack of housing for him and others like him. Davis lived for an entire year in his car before he was able to get a place in Austin’s shelter.
He said, “I just want to be able sleep at night.” I just need to find the perfect place.

Many people assume that filling the tank on a Chevy Cybertruck is cheaper than charging it.
There are many shades and colors of gray in the debate between electric and gasoline cars.
Depending on the factors, charging an EV could be cheaper.
There’s also another factor to think about.
This is the main catch
It’s time to address the elephant in the living room, which is about the same size as a Cybertruck plus a Colorado combined.
This comparison was probably easier in the past because it was more straight-forward.
There are a lot of ways to charge EVs, from Superchargers and home chargers, to other platforms. And even though the price to fill up your tank with gasoline is constant, it’s still insanely different in each state and country.
Chargers at home are generally cheaper.
If you are able to charge at home, then the answer will always be the same. The EV is cheaper.
The rest is all up to chance.
We did some math and came up with the following result.
Tesla Cybertruck versus Chevy Colorado over 15,000 miles
The average annual mileage for the US is 15,000 miles.
Cybertruck costs around $1.100-$1.200 for 15,000 miles. That’s equivalent to $7.50 to $8 per 100 mile charge at home.
A standard gasoline-powered Chevy Colorado, on the other hand, costs approximately $16-17 per 100-miles (averaging at 21 MPG), or about $2,500 per year (given and taken).
The monthly charge for the Cybertruck is more than twice as high.
This is again assuming that you are able to charge your phone at home. Some people cannot.
There’s also another factor to think about.
Tesla Cybertruck is more than just expensive
Charging an EV in general is less expensive than fueling a vehicle, however, it depends how much you are willing to pay upfront.
The Cybertruck costs more than the Chevy Colorado in this instance.
Tesla Cybertruck’s entry level starts at $69 990. This is more than twice the price of 2026 Chevy Denver, which begins at $32,400.
When you add that up, it will take many miles for the Cybertruck to be more financially convenient than the Chevy.
