Trump’s rating of approval has plummeted in the run-up to midterm elections. Polls point to many factors. Most notably, the US-Israeli war against Iran, and the knock-on effects it had on the US consumer economy.
Lack of excitement threatens to undermine what were already long odds for the Republicans to retain control of the House of Representatives. The shifting public sentiment has put the control of both chambers in greater danger, though it is still uphill for Democrats to win.
Losing control of either chamber in Trump’s final two years would be a significant check on his authority.
Not all Republicans are as convinced by Trump’s and his party’s claim that the convention would increase voter turnout.
Many, especially those who are in tight races, kept their distance from the event, fearing that association with the President could further mobilize his critics.

Where and when is the Republican Midterm Convention?
On Wednesday, 9 September and Thursday, 10 September, the convention will take place at American Airlines Center, Dallas, Texas.
On both days, the event will run between 3pm and 9pm Central Time (20:00-02:00 GMT).
Trump will speak both nights. He is set to deliver a speech on Wednesday and the closing keynote of the convention on Thursday, from 8pm-9pm Central Time (01:01-02am GMT Friday).
US Vice-President JD Vance is scheduled to deliver a closing speech at the end of night one.
This is a standard political convention.
Not at all.
The Republican National Committee, the official organisational body of the Republican Party, has described the Dallas midterm as “a first in American politics history”.
The primary campaign before the presidential election has traditionally been capped by both Democratic and Republican conventions. In the past, the emphasis was on the nomination of the president during these largely symbolic events.
At these conventions, “delegates” (or representatives) from each state vote for candidates based on their state’s primary results.
The candidate with the majority required of delegates becomes the official presidential nominee for the party at the convention.
Parties will also hold smaller meetings to release their official party platform.
Why will the Republicans hold a convention for midterm elections in 2026
There will not be any nominations – whether presidential or other – as 2026 does not have a presidential election.
The convention is now more of a fundraising and campaign rally.
The idea is to use this opportunity to present candidates who are running in punishing elections to donors, and give them a message that’s clear, even if it comes from Trump, as these races reach their last stretch.
The RNC promised to “showcase President Trump’s successes, candidates and causes which have brought the midterm elections of 2026 into unprecedented focus”.
What is on the agenda?
It will be a big event. On night 1, the official programme includes “53 speakers and items”, followed by another 56 on night 2.
First night’s topics include tax reduction, affordability of healthcare, immigration, border policies, trade, and domestic manufacturing.
Second night: Families and affordability, with policies on taxes, tips, overtime, and Social Security.
Trump’s political message is reflected in the subject matter.
Other topics are not given much attention in the official program. Trump’s tariff policies and the US-Israeli war against Iran are barely mentioned.
What else has been said?
The two-day convention will feature a range of Republican candidates and prominent speakers.
Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton will likely get plenty of attention. Paxton, who is running against Democrat James Talarico in the Senate race, has a lead early on that alarms Republicans. Since 1994, no Democrat has won a statewide Texas office.
Trump said to reporters that he would be bringing in a number of speakers. “The one we will focus on is Ken Paxton,” he told them last week. “We gotta get him elected.”
This race has a personal touch for Trump who chose to endorse the MAGA-aligned Paxton, over Republican Senator John Cornyn. Cornyn is viewed by many as Talarico’s most likely opponent.
Can Trump’s rally help Republicans win the midterm elections?
The convention’s impact on voter turnout remains to be determined.
Trump is a savvy campaigner who has used his talent for television to gain support and mobilize voters with low propensities. Several factors, however, could have a limited impact.
Trump’s speech on Thursday evening clashes with the first games of the National Football League season. This event is also scheduled to coincide with several commemorative events of the 9/11 attacks that are taking place throughout the week.
Some Republican officials also criticised the announcement, made in a hurry, of the event that Trump requested at the end of June. This raised questions about whether the organisers would be able achieve the spectacle they envisioned.
Trump’s approval rating continues to plummet, with major polls averaging a mere 38 percent. Reuters Ipsos and Financial Times Focaldata conducted polls in August that showed only a 33% approval rating.
Trump was rated at 52 percent in the January 2025 election.
Why do some Republicans skip?
Several Republicans who are running in important races have confirmed that they will be attending the convention.
Former Democratic Senator Sherrod brown is a formidable opponent for Ohio Senator Jon Husted. Georgia Representative Mike Collins is also running to replace Democratic Senator Jon Ossoff.
Other people have shown caution.
Trump’s second-term policies have left a shadow. Many candidates are calculating if their attendance will backfire, and instead electrify voters who oppose Trump.
According to The Associated Press, the Democratic turnout this year in key states such as Michigan, Wisconsin and Texas has risen dramatically, while Republican participation has remained stable but not extraordinary. This is a concerning sign for Republicans.
Susan Collins of Maine, a Republican who is seen to be vulnerable in the race she has against Democrat Troy Jackson was among those that have stated they won’t attend.
Many candidates running in important House races have cited prior commitments.
The Bulwark reported that Representative Mariannette Miller Meeks preferred to stay in Iowa where she is facing a Democratic challenger, Christina Bohannan.
She explained her choice: “I have a particular district I need to attend and look after, so I will be there.”
Miller-Meeks won by just 0.1 per cent in 2024 over Bohannan.
What are the Democrats doing?
Protests are being organised by several groups with a leftist bent.
Hakeem Jeffreys, the House Democratic Leader announced four Democratic legislators will be traveling to Dallas in order to counterprogram during the Republican Convention.
The cash-strapped Democratic National Committee has avoided its own midterm conference.
In July, NOTUS reported that the committee was in debt after the presidential elections of 2024. It even put up the Washington DC headquarters as collateral to secure a loan for $15m.
RNC still hasn’t released the final cost of its convention.

Hawaii Gov. Josh Green has closed all schools and offices in the westmost islands, Kauai Niihau as well as Oahu on Tuesday due to Hurricane Lowell.
Kauai will be hit by damaging winds, mudslides and tornadoes. Rip currents are also a danger. Some areas may receive as much as 60 cm (24 inches) of rainfall.
Closures were implemented for Oahu County and Kauai, where the National Hurricane Center had issued a Hurricane Warning.
Kauai County is made up of the two major Hawaiian islands, Kauai (which has over 73,000 residents) and Niihau (which only has less than 100). The warning also covered a portion of the massive Papahanaumokuakea Marine National Monument.
Weather agency warned of the potential for “several” tornadoes near Kauai, Niihau and other Hawaiian Islands in the evenings and overnights.
Tropical storm warnings were in place for Oahu which is home to close to a million people.
National Hurricane Center stated that the center of the storm would pass close to or west of Niihau on Monday night and Tuesday morning. Lowell was a category 2 hurricane on Monday, but the wind speed is expected to decrease. However, at the closest point to the island the hurricane will still be a hurricane.
Green stated in a press release that closing offices, schools and courthouses would help to keep people from the road during hazardous conditions. This will also allow emergency crews more time to protect our community. I urge all residents of Kauai County to stay indoors and avoid any unnecessary travel.
The mayor also advised residents to avoid the shorelines and floodwaters. He also suggested that they prepare for possible power failures by preparing for them in advance.
Oahu, Maui and parts of Big Island of Hawaii (the island furthest to the east of all the major Hawaiian islands) are expected to receive isolated rainfall amounts of 10 inches.

Gas prices have risen dramatically since Labor Day, and drivers will pay more for their gasoline now than ever before.
According to Hertz, the rental car company, the holidays are one of busiest weekends for travel. This means that road trips could be costlier than normal.
According to AAA, the national average price for unleaded regular gas on Monday was $4.15, which is a new record for the holiday.
AAA reports that the price of gas has never exceeded $4 on Labor Day. Previous record price was $3.82 on September 3, 2012.
AAA reports that, despite the fact the price per gallon is lower than its peak of $4.56 set in 2026, the prices remain about 30% more expensive than what drivers paid on average a year earlier, which was $3.20.
AAA spokesperson Brittany Moye said that while gasoline prices usually fall after summer driving seasons, this year’s high crude oil costs offset the seasonal trend.
Diesel prices also reached a new record as we head into the long weekend. AAA reported that the price of gasoline on Monday was $5.90, up from $3.71 per gallon a year earlier.
The global oil supply is still constrained

West Texas Intermediate crude futures, a benchmark of U.S. prices for oil, were trading around $92 per barrel at 9:30 am. ET Monday, as compared to about $67 just before the Iran War began on February 28. Brent crude futures, a benchmark international oil contract, traded at around $97 per barrel Monday, up roughly from $72 before the war.
The oil prices fluctuated throughout the war as tankers were prevented from passing through the Strait of Hormuz and reducing global supplies.
The main ingredient in gasoline is crude oil, which accounts for the majority of its retail price.
According to the U.S. Energy Information Administration, an estimated 4.9 millions barrels of crude and petroleum-based liquids are transported through the Strait every day. This is a dramatic drop from 21.6 million barrels a day, which was the average in 2025’s last quarter, just before the war in Iran started.

The Middle East is still experiencing a disruption of supply, while at the same, the Middle East as well as Russia are suffering from conflicts, which has reduced the supply to the market, said Andy Lipow. He’s the president of Lipow Oil Associates, an oil consulting company in Houston that specializes on refinery operations.
According to EIA, U.S. gasoil inventories for the week ended August 28 were 6 percent below the average.
Gas with a winter blend could reduce prices
Lipow explained that there could be an underlying factor to the upcoming increase in gas prices.
Lipow stated that “the good news is the industry will transition [in September] from winter-grade gasoline, which should provide some relief at the pumps.”
According to EIA, winter gasoline tends to be cheaper because of the lower production costs. The summer gas has a higher-priced blend, and is generally no longer produced after September 15.
The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) announced on August 20th that the winter blend gas can be purchased beginning September 1, effectively ending summer-blend requirement early.
Experts said that the supply of crude oil globally remains the key factor for the price of gasoline.
Lipow stated that the market was waiting to see if the U.S., Iran and other countries could come to an agreement whereby the Strait of Hurmuz would be open for all traffic.

Travel restrictions have been placed on U.S. government employees in the Mexican border city of Nogales, Sonora, according to officials.
The U.S. Embassy and Consulates in Mexico on Saturday issued a warning restricting government activity over an unspecified threat in Nogales, Sonora, in Mexico.
“Due to threat information, U.S. government activities in, and travel to, Nogales have been restricted to essential movement during daylight hours only,” the U.S. Consulate General in Nogales said in a statement.

“We are alerting U.S. citizens of this threat and change in posture,” the statement continued.
Sonora’s State Security Board said it contacted U.S. consular officials after the alert was issued but did not provide information identifying a specific threat. State authorities said they had no information establishing a concrete risk to the public, though they would continue preventive security operations in Nogales.
The alert also reminded Americans that the U.S. Travel Advisory designates Sonora as a Level 3 “Reconsider Travel” area.
Anyone in the area is urged to exercise increased caution and be aware of their surroundings, seek shelter in the event of an incident, notify friends and family of their safety in the event of an incident, follow instructions from Mexican law enforcement, and monitor local media for updates.
U.S. lawmakers also encouraged people in the area to pay attention to the warnings issued by the U.S. government.
“For Americans in or near Nogales – or who may have family members or friends there: please heed the guidance and warnings from the U.S. government,” Rep. Andy Biggs, R-Ariz., said on X.
“We are praying for the safety of U.S. citizens and personnel who may be in harm’s way,” he added.
