Following his arrest on 16 April, singer D4vd (real name David Burke) is now facing serious charges in California.

The 21-year old was accused of first-degree homicide with special circumstances. Additional allegations included continuous lewd acts on a minor below 14 and mutilation human remains.

According to a Daily Mail article, officials from the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office explained the nature of the charges. They said that the special circumstances associated with the murder count included “lying in waiting, committing this criminal for financial gain, or murdering a victim in an investigation.”

These enhancements increase the potential penalties for a conviction.

D4vd, at the moment, is being held in a Los Angeles jail without bail. Authorities have stated that a final decision on whether to pursue death penalty will come later in the legal proceedings.

The case was first brought to light last September when employees at a Hollywood towyard noticed a strong smell coming from a Tesla vehicle that had been impounded.

The vehicle was reported to have been left on the street for more 72 hours before it was towed.

When the authorities examined the car, they found human remains in the front trunk.

Celeste Rivas Hernandez, 14, was identified by investigators as the victim.

According to officials the remains were discovered in a cadaverbag and had suffered severe decomposition.

The county medical examiner described the bodies as “severely decayed,” noting that it is likely the victim died long before the discovery.

According to law enforcement sources, the Tesla was registered at an address associated with D4vd located in Texas.

This connection was a crucial part of the investigation and led to his being named as a suspect in late February.

The authorities obtained a search warrant later for a Hollywood Hills residence where Burke was reportedly staying.

During the search, an unidentified computer was seized. Officials have not revealed what was found on it.

In mid-November, prosecutors presented evidence and called multiple witnesses to testify.

D4vd associates were reportedly involved, including his managers and Neo Langston.

Rivas Hernandez’s family members said she was last seen spring 2024, after leaving her Lake Elsinore home at age 13.

She had previously run away, which made it difficult to find her.

According to reports, her mother filed three separate missing person reports in 2024.

During this time, the family learned that their daughter was possibly involved in a romantic relationship with a man named “David” whom they had not met.

According to reports, the two also shared tattoos that read “Sshhh” across their right index finger.

Friends of D4vd told TMZ later that the two had been “frequently seen” together, although authorities have not confirmed their relationship publicly.

The case has also renewed attention to D4vd’s music career and the themes that are present in some his songs.

The allegations against his 2022 track, “Romantic Homicide”, have been widely discussed.

The artist sings in the song: “In the back my mind, I murdered you… And I didn’t even regret it…I can’t believe I said that… But it’s real… I hate you,” lyrics which have been revisited since by both fans and critics.

D4vd became a household name in 2022, after gaining popularity on TikTok. They eventually collaborated with major artists such as SZA and Kali Uchis.

He was reportedly on a tour at the time of the discovery, but those plans were later cancelled.

Many details are still unclear as the legal process unfolds. Authorities have not released all information about the evidence gathered, and the case will likely move through the courts within the next few months.
