Double the Dazzle: April Brings Two Meteor Showers to the Night Sky

We’ve had two good reasons to look up at the skies lately: the pink moon earlier this week and the launch of the Orion spacecraft carrying humans toward the moon for the first time in more than 50 years on the Artemis II mission. But there’s more to look forward to, with April bringing two meteor showers.. After a long lull at the start of the year — the Quadrantids meteor shower peaked just after New Year’s, and little else followed — meteor activity is finally picking up again, with two showers now coming into view.. The first meteor shower is the Lyrids, which begins on April 14 and continues until the end of the month. This is a relatively minor meteor shower fed by the C/1861 G1 comet, also known as Thatcher after its discoverer, A.E. Thatcher, in 1861. It’s a long-period comet that takes 415.5 years to orbit the sun.. The Lyrids meteor shower peaks on April 21-22 and will produce somewhere between 15 and 20 meteors per hour under optimal conditions. Per the American Meteor Society, the peak should occur on the evening of April 22, so if you can only make it out for one of the two nights, the second night is expected to be the better viewing experience.. The second meteor shower starting in April is the Eta Aquariids. This meteor shower begins on April 19 and spans for over a month, wrapping up on May 28. This is the stronger of the two meteor showers with an expected peak of roughly 50 meteors per hour, depending on where you view them from. The Eta Aquariids shower is known for its fast meteors and persistent tails that stick around for a little longer after the meteor has disappeared.. The 1P/Halley comet feeds it, the same one that feeds the Orionids meteor shower every October. Its peak should be May 5-6. The further south you are, the more meteors you can expect to see, and the opposite is true the further north you go. The best place to view this meteor shower is in the tropics.. Meteors from the Lyrids meteor shower will appear to originate from the Lyra constellation, which rises in the eastern skies during April. Stellarium.org. How to see Lyrids and Eta Aquariids. Meteor showers come with a built-in trick for finding them. They are named for the constellations where the meteors appear to originate. This origin point, known as the radiant, is where you want to be looking.. The Lyrids meteor shower originates from the Lyra constellation, which is close to the larger Hercules constellation. Both of them rise from the eastern sky shortly around 11 p.m. local time. It will then follow a similar trajectory to the sun, streaking overhead before setting in the west. Sunrise happens long before the constellations actually set, so if you’re waking up early to view these, you’ll want to look high in the western sky.. Meteors from the eta Aquariids will appear to originate from the Aquarius constellation, visible on the eastern horizon a few hours before dawn during April and May. Stellarium.org. The Eta Aquariids shower is more difficult t

NASA’s Artemis II Is Moon-Bound: Day 3 Live Updates

Here’s the astronauts’ out-of-this-world menu. NASA Screenshot by Corinne Reichert/CNET. Astronaut eats: they’re not just Tang and Space Food Sticks these days. NASA shared a look at the menu for the Artemis II astronauts, and it doesn’t sound half bad.. The Artemis II crew will enjoy more than 10 types of beverages, including coffee, mango-peach smoothies, green tea, apple cider, lemonade, a pineapple drink, cocoa and breakfast drinks flavored in their choice of chocolate, vanilla or strawberry.. The most common food items they’ll eat include tortillas, wheat flat bread, vegetable quiche, barbecued beef brisket, mango salad, granola with blueberries, macaroni and cheese, tropical fruit salad, couscous with nuts, broccoli au gratin, spicy green beans, almonds, cashews, and butternut squash cauliflower.. NASA also reports that the astronauts can choose to spice up their meals — there are five different hot sauces available to the crew. And culinary flavorings available include maple syrup, chocolate spread, peanut butter, spicy mustard, strawberry jam, honey, cinnamon and almond butter. Sweet treats include cookies, chocolate, pudding, cake, candy-coated almonds and cobbler.. And, no, they’re not popping a flavor pill or sucking a sandwich out of a tube, like old sci-fi shows told us.. “Food aboard Orion is ready-to-eat, rehydratable, thermostabilized or irradiated,” NASA says. “The crew uses Orion’s potable water dispenser to rehydrate foods and beverages and a compact, briefcase-style food warmer to heat meals as needed.”

After Cutting Down on ‘Side Quests,’ OpenAI Bought a Talk Show

OpenAI has spent the last few weeks seemingly trying to refocus on using AI for business instead of what execs dubbed “side quests,” dumping its AI video generator and its plans for an adult-themed chatbot. So this week, of course, the company announced it’s jumping into the media business.. OpenAI said it was acquiring Technology Business Programming Network, better known as TBPN, which runs a 3-hour show streamed on weekdays that delves into the biggest topics — and brings in the biggest names — in tech business.. (Disclosure: Ziff Davis, CNET’s parent company, in 2025 filed a lawsuit against OpenAI, alleging it infringed Ziff Davis copyrights in training and operating its AI systems.). OpenAI said it added TBPN to “help create a space for a real, constructive conversation about the changes AI creates,” Fidji Simo, CEO of AGI deployment at OpenAI, wrote in a message to employees shared by OpenAI. Simo said the company also wanted to take advantage of TBPN’s marketing prowess. “They have a strong pulse on where the industry is going, their comms and marketing ideas have really impressed me,” Simo said.. TBPN launched in October 2024 and has been compared to ESPN in how it covers tech — two guys at a big desk with news, analysis, commentary and banter about topics such as AI, crypto, startups and the defense industry. The show’s two hosts and co-founders, Jordi Hays and John Coogan, have had some of tech’s biggest names in studio — OpenAI’s Sam Altman, Meta’s Mark Zuckerberg, Microsoft’s Satya Nadella, entrepreneur Mark Cuban and Salesforce’s Marc Benioff, to name some.. The show is streamed live from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. PT Monday through Friday on YouTube and X from the Ultradome, a studio on a Hollywood film lot. The show has 70,000 viewers daily and looks set to make more than $30 million in revenue this year, according to the Wall Street Journal.. TBPN co-host Hays acknowledged in a statement that the show has been “critical” of the AI industry.. “After getting to know Sam and the OpenAI team, what stood out most was their openness to feedback and commitment to getting this right,” Hays said. “Moving from commentary to real impact in how this technology is distributed and understood globally is incredibly important to us.”. In an era of fast-moving media consolidation, it’s a fair question — can TBPN keep saying what they really think, even if that ruffles OpenAI’s feathers? In her statement, Simo said OpenAI wants the show to maintain its “editorial independence.”. “TBPN will continue to run their programming, choose their guests, and make their own editorial decisions,” she said. “That’s foundational to their credibility, and it’s something we’re explicitly protecting as part of this agreement.”. Altman, OpenAI founder, echoed that sentiment with a posting on X. also calling TBPN his “favorite tech show.”. “We want them to keep that going and for them to do what they do so well,” Altman posted. “I don’t expect them to go any easier on us

‘You Guys Look Great’: Artemis Astronauts Share Earth’s Out-of-This-World Views

It’s been more than 50 years since NASA astronaut Harrison Schmitt took the famous Big Blue Marble photograph, showing a breathtaking vision of Earth taken aboard the Apollo 17 spacecraft on its way to the moon. Now, as the four-astronaut crew of the Artemis II mission heads toward the moon, more spectacular images are being released.. This stunning photo is perhaps the most reminiscent of the Big Blue Marble, showing Earth in all its fragile, lovely glory.. “That’s us!” NASA wrote in a post. The post also quoted astronaut Christina Koch as saying of Earth, “You guys look great.”. In a reply to questions on the post, NASA wrote, “Two auroras (top right and bottom left) are visible in this image. Zodiacal light (bottom right), is also visible, as well as airglow from Earth’s atmosphere.”. Another neat photo from the Artemis mission shows the planet neatly bisected, with one side lit up by the sun and the other in darkness.. This image of the Earth was taken by one of the Artemis II crew out the Orion’s window. Reid Wiseman/NASA. “You look amazing, you look beautiful,” Victor Glover, Artemis II pilot, said of the views of Earth in a video call with ABC News.. A view of the Earth from NASA’s Orion spacecraft as it orbits above the planet during the Artemis II test flight. NASA. Another intriguing image shows part of the spacecraft itself. USA Today noted that “the image appears to show the bottom of Orion’s service module where its main engine and auxiliary thrusters are housed.”.
