Dowry deaths driven by greed, must be dealt with strongly: SC

Dowry deaths are a “severe blot on society” and a grave violation of human dignity, the Supreme Court has emphasised, urging courts across the country to deal with such “greed-driven” crimes with an iron hand.. Dowry deaths driven by greed, must be dealt with strongly: SC. Setting aside a Patna high court order granting bail to a man accused of killing his wife over dowry demands, a bench of justices JB Pardiwala and Vijay Bishnoi said that despite statutory prohibitions, dowry-related violence continues to claim the lives of thousands of women, often through murder or circumstances that drive them to suicide.. “Dowry deaths are indeed a profound disgrace and a major social evil representing a severe violation of human rights and dignity…This practice continues to result in the unnatural deaths of thousands of women, often through murder or driven to suicide because of greed-driven demands for money or valuables from the groom’s family,” noted the court in its order released earlier this week.. The court’s remarks came while allowing an appeal filed by the deceased woman’s mother, who had challenged the grant of bail to the accused husband in a case registered in Bihar. The top court held that the high court’s decision to release the accused was “wholly unsustainable” given the seriousness of the allegations and the material on record.. The case relates to the death of a woman within one-and-a-half years of her marriage under suspicious circumstances. According to the FIR lodged by her mother in September 2024, substantial dowry — including ₹20 lakh in cash and gold and silver worth ₹6 lakh — had already been given at the time of marriage.. The complaint alleged that the husband and his family continued to harass the woman for additional dowry, including demands for a motorcycle, a refrigerator, and a vehicle for business purposes. The mother also alleged that her daughter had been threatened with death if the demands were not met.. Medical evidence further strengthened the prosecution’s case. The post-mortem report recorded multiple serious injuries, including a fractured skull with lacerated brain matter, ruptured sternum and heart, pelvic fractures, and multiple abrasions across the body. The cause of death was identified as haemorrhage and shock due to head injury. Advocates Pranjal Sharma and Samir Ali Khan appeared for the deceased’s mother.. Nixing the high court’s order of May 2025, the Supreme Court criticised what it described as a mechanical approach in granting bail in serious offences like dowry deaths. It noted that the high court had failed to consider crucial aspects such as the nature and extent of injuries and the statutory presumption applicable in such cases.. “The high court lost sight of many important aspects of the matter, more particularly the post-mortem report indicating number of injuries…,” the bench said, adding that mere custody period or slow progress of trial could not

‘No-go’ zone, ‘beyond limits of law’: 5 facts on Lyari, Pakistan’s impoverished town featured in Dhurandhar

Lyari, an impoverished town in Pakistan’s Karachi that till now existed beyond the glitters of the capital city, has hit headlines after featuring in mega Bollywood blockbuster Dhurandhar — a movie about the brutal underworld nexus of the area and its connection with terrorism.. A screen grab from Dhurandhar’s trailer, depicting the entrance of Lyari, a town in Pakistan’s Karachi (YouTube). Known as a “no-go” area because of the lawlessness, politically motivated violence and as a space where geographical boundaries mark the limits of law, Lyari was recreated by Dhurandhar’s team in Thailand, according to director of the film Aditya Dhar. The action scenes were shot across Punjab’s Amritsar, Ludhiana, and Maharashtra’s Mumbai.. ‘No-go zone’: Lyari, one of Karachi’s oldest neighbourhoods, sits close to the city’s historic port and has long been a gateway for migration and settlement. Its narrow lanes, dense housing, and tightly knit communities reflect decades of unplanned urban growth. Despite its central location, Lyari developed a reputation of being beyond the limits of law. “Lyari – home to lawlessness, politically motivated violence and crime – is an infamous ‘no-go area’ in the financial capital of Pakistan, Karachi. It has a population of about one million people, but only limited presence of law enforcement agencies, so criminals often find refuge here. One very rarely hears of police operations in this area,” wrote Pakistani peace building expert Dr Zahid Shahab Ahmed in an article for PeaceInsight in 2011.. Hotspot of gang violence: As shown in Dhurandhar movie, Lyari has been a hotspot of gang violence, particularly from 1980s throughout the early 2010s. The area became synonymous with turf wars, political patronage networks, and lawlessness, drawing national attention. Security operations in later years helped curb much of the violence, but the legacy of that period still shapes perceptions of the neighbourhood. Local news portals on gang fights in Lyari have previously reported that armed gangs exchanged fire with no interference from police anywhere in sight.. Rehman Dakait link: Dhurandhar surrounds the life of Rehman Dakait — a character played by actor Akshaye Khanna in the film — one of the most notorious gang leaders in Lyari. He is known to have rose to prominence in the early 2000s, gaining significant influence over local criminal networks and becoming a symbol of Lyari’s law-and-order crisis. His eventual killing in a police encounter, also depicted in the movie, marked a turning point, highlighting the state’s intensified efforts to dismantle gang structures in the locality.. Screen grab from a video from 16 years ago showing the aftermath of the killing of Rehman Dakait, a notorious gangster of Lyari (YouTube/Haider Ali). Pak’s football hub: Despite earning a notorious reputation, Lyari historically has been also known for its rich cultural identity. It is widely regarded as Pakistan’s football h
