Eminem is open about his substance abuse issues. He once said that he takes between 10 and twenty pills daily. “I was taking Valium Ambien and Vicodin. “I was taking a lot. The numbers got so big I didn’t know what I took,” he wrote for Vibe magazine.
Before his near-fatal drug overdose in 2007, the rapper was dealing with personal issues. The year before, he filed for divorce from Kim Scott a second time. His best friend was then killed in a fight at a bar the following week. Eminem collapsed after taking too many methadone pills in December 2007. He was rushed into the hospital where doctors said he would not have survived if he’d been brought in 2 hours later.
“I didn’t want to believe that it was a serious disease. I only realized I had a disease when I almost died. I continued to use. “I literally almost died,” he said.

In 2025, a documentary called “Stans”, which was based on the views of his fans, was released. It focused on the career of the rapper. Eminem revealed details of his overdose in the documentary, saying that he had been in a “vicious cycle” of depression and popping pills. “I woke in the hospital, and I didn’t even know what had happened. I woke up with tubes in my body and s-t in my lungs and I was unable to get up. “I wanted to move,” said he.
Hailie Jade was the main reason he decided to become sober. Eminem was filled with guilt after he missed his daughter’s first guitar recital because of his overdose. The rapper decided that if he wasn’t able to be sober himself, he would at least be able to do it for his daughter. He entered rehab in 2008. Since then, he has been sober.

Eminem sought guidance from Elton John who has been sober for over 20 years. John told The Guardian in 2010 that he had been helping Eminem for the past 18 months.
The rapper revealed that he was inspired by the singer, John, when he decided he wanted to quit drinking. John is also in the entertainment industry and could relate to the rapper’s lifestyle. Eminem said that John understood the pressures and other reasons for drug use.
Eminem and John met for the first time at the 2001 Grammys, when they performed together “Stan”. The rapper was criticized for lyrics that were perceived by some as homophobic. John later defended the rapper by saying that he did not view him as homophobic. Since then, the two have developed a strong bond that goes beyond their work as entertainers.
