Ex-cop who killed suspect with cooler walks free as he appeals conviction that made him an example

NEWYou can now hear Fox News articles. A former New York City Police Officer who was sentenced for throwing a cooler that killed a fleeing suspect, walked out of jail Monday after being granted bail. He is appealing his conviction. Erik Duran, 38 was released from the Elmira Correctional Facility on Monday afternoon, according a post made by the NYPD Sergeants Benevolent Association. According to FOX 5, Duran was incarcerated on a manslaughter charge and was serving between three and nine years. As he waited for the outcome of his appeal, a judge ordered him surrender his passport to his attorneys. GOT A TIP? Vincent Vallelong is the president of Duran’s union in the SBA. He reportedly said, “This is a significant win for Erik and Erik’s family, as well as for law enforcement officers across the country.” Duran, a married dad of three, had been convicted of charges stemming the August 2023 death Eric Duprey. Duran hurled a cooler at Duprey, causing him crash and hit his forehead on the pavement. He was attempting fleeing on a moped while officers were conducting an undercover drug raid in the Bronx. Duprey died later from his injuries.
