Harry and Meghan’s American dream runs out of steam

The Duchess and Duke of Sussex arrived in Britain privately on Wednesday from California, bringing to an end their six-year stay in America and the American Dream.
BBC reported Harry and Meghan’s return to Britain. A spokesperson for Harry said the arrival was “not something we would discuss” but the response of the couple is notable. They are moving away from their celebrity life in America and towards a more quiet, private one.
Harry and Meghan’s return to the UK was a surprise. However, Harry had been laying the groundwork of reconciliation for the past 2 1/2 years, since the cancer diagnosis of his father King Charles III.
There’s no reason to continue fighting. The life is valuable. Harry told the BBC in a 2025 candid interview that he didn’t know for how long his father had.
Harry and Charles briefly met again a few months later after a 19-month absence. Since then, he has met his father on a regular basis, but remained estranged from his brother Prince William.
Harry, Meghan, and their children visited the U.K. in July, marking their first visit together in Britain since Queen Elizabeth II’s funeral.
Just a few weeks after the couple’s announcement, they announced that their plan to move their family to Britain was imminent.
The decision was made in private and both Charles and Camilla, as well as William & Catherine, were informed. Charles is said to be happy to have the chance to spend time with Harry, his wife and children, but William has not yet commented on the decision.
What is the reason for Harry and Meghan’s move to America?
The couple, who will step down from their positions as senior royal members in January 2020 announced, after “months” of reflection, that they “would carve out a new progressive role (within the royal institution)”.
Their statement went on to say that they would “step back” as a “senior member of the Royal Family, and strive to be financially independent while still supporting Her Majesty Queen.
They moved from London to California in the fall of that year, and explained their decision to leave royal life by way of high-profile interviews and Netflix documentaries, as well as a book, where they made accusations of racism, bullying and lack of support of Meghan’s mental health issues.
Buckingham Palace replied at the time in a press release, stating that while “some memories may differ”, the allegations were “taken seriously” and would be dealt with by the royal family.
Their decision to air out their complaints in public exacerbated the feud with the Royal family. When the scandals finally died down, it was up to them to show that they could live a normal life in America despite royal drama.
Many high-profile projects, including huge deals with Spotify or Netflix, failed to achieve the desired success, and left their professional and financial ambitions unfulfilled. Their family relationships were also strained.

Harry and Meghan’s American adventure started strong.
Reuters reports that the couple’s two-hour explosive interview with Oprah Winfrey attracted a global audience of 49.1 millions. The couple maintained their global presence while contributing to the discussion surrounding their decision not to continue as royals.
The couple, shortly after they stepped down from their royal duties, signed a deal worth $100 million with Netflix. They will produce an unspecified number of television series, documentaries and children’s shows.
CNN reports that their first project for the streaming giant, “Harry & Meghan”, reached 28,000,000 households in its first four-day run, making it Netflix’s highest-rated documentary debut.
Harry’s “Spare” memoir, which followed the Docuseries closely, gave a second, honest account of his life as a royal working, and included details of how the relationships in Harry’s family were strained. This memoir was also very popular and sold in record numbers.
When the couple stepped away from their tell-all project, interest in them began to fade.
Netflix’s next projects for the couple have not been as successful as their first docuseries. The Netflix projects “With Love Meghan,” “Heart of Invictus,””Polo,” and “Live to Lead,” attracted modest viewing figures, which led the streaming service to reduce its “first-look” arrangement with the pair in March.
The couple’s $25 million Spotify multi-year deal ended abruptly in 2023, after they produced little content. Meghan’s “Archetypes”, a podcast she hosted with her husband, was also a financial disappointment.
Bill Simmons, an executive at Spotify and a prominent podcaster dismissed the pair as “the swindlers” after the deal collapsed.
Meghan’s second attempt, “Confessions Of A Female Founder” produced by Lemonada Media podcast network, also failed to garner much traction. Harry also had his own ideas for podcasts, including one that focused on childhood trauma or controversial figures. But none of them came true.
The couple’s other projects suffered the same fate.
Meghan’s lifestyle label, American Riviera Orchard (later rebranded As Ever), failed to leave a lasting impression on society and received mediocre reviews.
After its premiere at Sundance Film Festival, in January, her most recent film, “Cookie Queens,” was a documentary on Girl Scouts’ ambitions to make money selling cookies. It failed at the box-office.
The New York Times reported that the couple had fallen into a Hollywood trap which has been caught by countless other couples before. Leo Braudy is a Los Angeles-based cultural historian and author of “The Frenzy of Renown”: Fame and Its History.
Braudy said that there has always existed an aura, a magical way of thinking. Everyone thinks they are beautiful or handsome. They think, “If these people made it to Hollywood, I can too.”
Braudy added, “There would be far fewer Hollywood flops if there were an easy way to achieve success in the showbiz.”
Harry and Meghan found Hollywood a difficult formula to master. After a few years, the huge commercial and cultural successes of their early days slowed down. They returned to Britain in search for new opportunities and to try to repair their broken family bonds.

Prince Harry, Meghan Markle to remain ‘non-working royals’ in UK, King Charles III confirms

According to the letter sent Monday by the Royal Household, Prince Harry and Meghan the Duchess will be “private citizens”, and they won’t work as royals in the United Kingdom.
Harry’s dad, King Charles III, sent the letter to reiterate Harry and Meghan’s official position.
Charles and the Palace have publicly commented for the first time on Harry and Meghan moving back to Britain, six years after they left their positions as senior royals and moved to California.
Their spokesperson, speaking to ABC News on Tuesday, said that Harry and Meghan “were surprised” by the letter. The couple have not made any further comments.
In the letter, sent to Harry’s team and senior stakeholder across U.K. Government and Military — it states that Harry will have a “financial autonomy” and “protection as they wish of their privacy.”
The letter says: “It is clear that the status of the Duchess and Duke of Sussex will not change.” Their styles as Her and His Royal Highness are in abeyance, and they do not use them. Their charitable works are a private matter and they do them in their personal capacity. Their position, in short, is similar to that of private citizens who have commercial and charitable interest.”
Harry and Meghan will no longer be performing their royal duties in 2020. They won’t use the title of Royal Highness, they won’t represent monarchy, and no public money is being paid for their royal duties.
Harry and Meghan do not receive automatic funding for armed police as Harry, his father the King, or his brother Prince William.
Since moving to California six years ago, the Sussexes have been relying on a private security team.
Harry and Meghan are yet to make any public comments about their return.
According to reports, the couple, along with their children Archie and Lilibet arrived in Britain on August 26. According to a person familiar with the situation, the family intends to remain in the U.K. for an “extended time period” where Archie, Lilibet, and their parents will be attending school.
The Sussexes’ location in the U.K. is unknown, nor are Archie and Lilibet’s schooling details.
Harry appeared in public for the very first time on Tuesday since returning to Britain. Tower Bridge Studios in London shared on Facebook a picture of Harry. The caption read: “Thanks Prince Harry for selecting Tower Bridge Studios!” The studios were a pleasure for you to visit and sign our wall. We look forward to seeing you again.
Harry and Meghan, who have moved to California, are now focusing on their commercial endeavors. They’ve taken up speaking engagements, a Netflix production agreement that includes their docuseries “Harry & Meghan” for 2022, as well Meghan’s lifestyle series “With Love, Meghan.”

Alcohol-related cancer deaths doubled, go beyond liver, study finds

New research shows that alcohol-related deaths from cancer are on the rise. And it is not only liver-related, as previous studies have shown.
The study published in The Lancet Regional Health – Americas on August 2 found that alcohol-related cancer deaths in America doubled between 1990 and 2023, from approximately 11,400 to over 23,100. The deaths did not only involve liver cancer. The researchers found that there was also an increase in colorectal cancer, as well as breast, esophageal and pancreatic cancers.
In a press release, Dr. Chinmay Jani said that the most shocking finding of this study was how alcohol could affect cancers across the board. Although its link to liver cancer has been widely acknowledged, the contribution of alcohol in cancers like colorectal cancer, esophageal cancer, breast cancer, pancreatic cancer, and prostate cancer are less understood by public.
It doesn’t even take much for the risk to rise. Researchers have shown that alcohol consumption can increase cancer risk, even at levels of 5-15 grams daily. In the U.S., the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention define a standard drink as 14 grams of alcohol or 0.6 ounces.
Researchers at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center led this study which used data from three decades of Global Burden of Disease. Authors note that the study has some limitations. These include the observational database design, which may lead to incomplete data.
Gilberto Lopes (Senior Author and Chief of Division of Medical Oncology, Sylvester) explained that the findings confirm the notion that lifestyle factors may influence cancer risk.
Lopes stated in the press release that “this study shows alcohol is not only associated with cancer, but also other diseases and groups of people.” As physicians and researchers in cancer, we can help our patients to understand that drinking alcohol is modifiable and small changes, informed or not, are part of an overall strategy that reduces cancer risk.
