Sigler reflects on the years she battled health issues in silence, and her one regret is that she didn’t speak up sooner. The actress revealed publicly her MS diagnosis only a decade after struggling with the condition for 14 years. Mayo Clinic defines multiple sclerosis (MS) as a disease which causes breakdown of the protective coating of nerves.

Myelin, the protective sheath covering nerve fibers is attacked by the immune system. MS can cause numbness and weakness, as well as vision changes, difficulty walking, and other symptoms. After years of worrying about how she would appear to the public, and especially in the industry she decided that she “was done apologizing” for having MS, and shared her truth.

What felt like a burden lifted off her shoulders was the outpouring of support from the MS Community. It was then that she realized how many years she had spent alone in pain and suffering. With the support of the MS community, it would have been a smooth ride. “Oh, I’ve robbed myself, of this tribe, these people who sees me.” Sigler realized that she was not alone any longer. She felt regret as her reality dawned.

She remembered her mother telling her to “Put on lipstick and say everything is fine,” adding that it was not for others to judge her.

She has now learned to let go external pressure and the feeling of safety has evolved from secrecy into acceptance. Sigler also praised Christina Applegate, her “MeSsy podcast” co-host who suffers from a similar condition, for helping to let her go of the shame. “Your pain does not have to break you.” “Your pain can break you loose,” said the mother of two, stating that she has learned to appreciate the value of hard times as they reveal who we are.
