In a recent interview, the actor reflects on the intense online attacks that he received for saying he “definitely wasn’t a Swiftie.” These included body-shaming comments that hit at his long-standing insecurities.
Hutcherson also reflected how this extreme response reinforced his desire to avoid internet fame.

In a GQ cover article, the actor recalls the reaction with a sense of surprise. He recalls how quickly the backlash escalated to body-shaming as soon as the comment began to circulate online.

The Hunger Games’ star said that the experience reinforced his decision to stay away from internet culture. This is despite many celebrities building highly visible online personalities.
Hutcherson, however, made it clear that he had no problem with Swift herself. He told the outlet that he thought “she was great” but that her music did not connect with him despite attending a concert in New Orleans last year.

Hutcherson is a popular figure on Instagram with over two million followers. He also made it clear he does not want to be idolized online. He told GQ that he doesn’t “need” the energy.
The actor said that too much familiarity with the public can hinder his work, particularly when it comes to blending into the characters he portrays onscreen.
“It’s counterintuitive for my job because if you’re known more, you won’t be able to disappear into characters,” said he. “They see you as ‘Oh, Josh.'” So, if a f*cking meme is you, people will know you by the meme.

Hutcherson had already made a name in Hollywood by the age of nine, with roles in family movies like “Zathura”, “Bridge to Terabithia” and others. But growing up under the spotlight meant he was constantly being scrutinized.
“You’re always being watched,” he said. “You could be recorded and photographed at all times, and that directly impacts your career and the roles you get.”
He explained that this constant attention also made him more aware of his “weaknesses,” such as his rosacea or shorter height. Hutcherson said that his insecurities are often used against him, and “thrown back” in his face.

Hutcherson, over time, has learned the importance of confronting insecurities. He has begun to do so by going to therapy.
“I’ve started really opening up about it in therapist and talking about it more directly,” said the “Hunger Games'” star, “as compared to having fake confidence but you’re really dying on the inside.”
Hutcherson still maintained that the process had not been easy. He said that therapy can require you to admit things about yourself which are uncomfortable or “scary” for you to say.

Hutcherson now says that he is able to deal with his insecurities better than he used to. He no longer sees them in terms of “negatives” or as “beauty flaws,” but as a part of his identity.
The former child actress said that the shift in her perspective came from both therapy and growing older.
Hutcherson’s healing process led him to say, “I feel that it has allowed me to handle it in an a lot more healthy and sane manner, and not spiral out, and feel like a f–k,”
Even though he has made progress, he insists that the struggle is not over. Hutcherson said that these triggers still come up at times, but he tries to prevent them from taking control.
