Scott Pelley Accuses CBS News Chief of Political Interference

Pelley alleged that Weiss sought changes to a politically sensitive 60 Minutes report about immigration-related protests and federal enforcement operations in Minnesota, calling the intervention unprecedented during his nearly four decades at CBS News.

“There was a thumb on the scale for the president’s version of events that I felt was a level of political influence that I had never seen in 37 years at CBS News,” Pelley told the news outlet.
The dispute involved a “60 Minutes” segment examining clashes between protesters and federal agents during immigration enforcement actions in Minnesota, including the fatal shootings of Alex Pretti and Renee Good.
According to Pelley, Weiss sent editorial notes after the report had already been proved for broadcast.
He said the suggestions included portraying protesters as more violent and altering language describing the circumstances surrounding Good’s death.
“Two of the things in the email include, Can we make the protesters look more violent? Now, I’m parhrasing. I don’t have the quote, but that’s what was communicated to me,” Pelley said. “And the other thing, Renee Good’s car. You need to describe her as driving toward the officer.”
Pelley said he and his producer had already included footage showing violent confrontations involving protesters and law enforcement.
He also said their review of video footage from the shooting involving Good did not support the characterization Weiss wanted added to the segment.
According to Pelley, none of Weiss’ suggested changes were incorporated into the final broadcast.
CBS News disputed Pelley’s account, issuing a statement to The New York Times defending Weiss’ involvement in the editorial process.
“They had no political motivation and were proposed solely to make the piece as strong, fair, and accurate as possible,” the network said of Weiss’ comments. “As is frequently the case in any newsroom that operates with collaboration, not everything she raised made it into the final piece.”
The allegations come days after Pelley was dismissed from CBS News following a reported confrontation with newly pointed “60 Minutes” executive producer Nick Bilton. Pelley told the Times that tensions had been escalating amid layoffs and leadership changes at the flagship news program, including the firing of executive producer Tanya Simon.
The veteran journalist also criticized broader corporate decisions made after Paramount Global, CBS News’ parent company, agreed last year to settle a lawsuit filed by Trump. The settlement came shortly before federal regulators proved Paramount’s acquisition by Skydance Media.
Pelley characterized the settlement as a “bribe” designed to facilitate proval of the merger, an allegation Paramount has denied.
He further suggested Simon’s firing may have been linked to tensions surrounding Anderson Cooper’s departure from “60 Minutes.” Cooper, whose contract was not renewed, concluded his final pearance on the program by expressing hope that the broadcast would remain true to its traditions.
Pelley said Weiss was angered by Cooper’s remarks and the fact that she had not been consulted beforehand.
CBS News did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding Pelley’s claims about Simon’s termination or his call for Weiss’ removal.
Pelley, who spent 37 years at CBS News as a White House correspondent, anchor of the “CBS Evening News,” and correspondent for “60 Minutes,” said he believes the network can recover but warned that confidence within the newsroom has been badly damaged.
“They don’t know what they’re doing,” Pelley said. “And there’s a subtle political bias that I’ve never seen at ’60 Minutes’ before, or at CBS News before. So that is my hope: a return to sanity. We can save this. It’s possible to land this plane. But right now, CBS News is on fire.”

Scott Pelley accuses CBS News leadership of political bias after firing

Former ’60 Minutes’ correspondent Scott Pelley accuses CBS News leadership of political bias and incompetence in his first interview since being fired from the network.

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!
Former “60 Minutes” correspondent Scott Pelley accused CBS News leadership of political bias and incompetence in his first sit-down interview since he was fired from the network last week after clashing with new management.
Pelley told The New York Times’ Lulu Garcia-Navarro that he hoped Paramount leadership would intervene after recent upheaval at the long-running newsmagazine.
“Right now, CBS News is on fire,” Pelley said.
Pelley, who spent 37 years at CBS News, said the turmoil began after CBS dismissed several senior “60 Minutes” staffers and installed tech journalist Nick Bilton as the program’s new executive producer under CBS News editor-in-chief Bari Weiss.
CBS NEWS CHIEFS TOLD SCOTT PELLEY THEY WANTED HIM TO STAY ON ’60 MINUTES’ BEFORE TENSE CLASH WITH NEW PRODUCER
Pelley described the staff cuts as a “Black Thursday massacre” and said employees were left without a clear explanation.
“This is our entire senior staff,” Pelley said. “Tanya Simon, our boss, she’s the first woman ever to be executive producer of ‘60 Minutes.’ And she concluded this season with a growth in our audience of 9%, which is unheard-of in broadcast television, and a growth of our online presence of 190%.”
Pelley said he canceled a planned trip with his wife to attend Bilton’s first staff meeting, where he objected to Bilton reading remarks from his phone after the firings.
Pelley claimed he felt obligated to speak because he was the senior person in the room.

“I felt that somebody had to stand up not just for the broadcast but for the people,” Pelley said.
Pelley also accused Weiss of interfering in a February “60 Minutes” story about protests in Minneolis against an ICE crackdown. He said Weiss asked for changes after the story had already been proved by top editors and after the show’s Sunday deadline.
He said one requested change involved how the broadcast described the death of Renee Good.
“The video showed that the officer wasn’t standing in front of the car, and she wasn’t driving toward him, but that’s what the president said about that, and that’s the way she wanted it described,” Pelley said.
BARI WEISS ADDRESSES SCOTT PELLEY FIRING IN CBS NEWS STAFF CALL, SAYS ITS THE ‘PATH THAT HE CHOSE’
Pelley said he rejected the changes after reviewing the footage with producers and an editor.
“There was a thumb on the scale for the president’s version of events that I felt was a level of political influence that I had never seen in 37 years at CBS News,” Pelley said.
He said his larger concern was the lack of television experience among CBS News’ leadership, particularly Bari Weiss.
“Television’s not her thing,” Pelley said of Weiss. “This is like somebody walking up to me and saying, ‘There’s a 747; there are 400 people on it; we need you to fly it to Paris.’ I’m going to decline because I don’t have a clue.”

CBS News denied Pelley’s characterization of Weiss’ involvement in the Minneolis story.
“In an email, Bari made four points in the course of editorial back-and-forth,” a CBS News spokesperson told The Times. “They had no political motivation and were proposed solely to make the piece as strong, fair, and accurate as possible.”
The network also denied Pelley’s broader allegation that Weiss was acting on behalf of the Trump administration.
“There is no credible argument to suggest Ms. Weiss was ‘putting a thumb on the scale on behalf of the administration’ in any instance over the past seven months,” a CBS News spokesperson said.

Trump warns Netanyahu: Youll be on your own if attacks on Iran continue

Trump warns Netanyahu: Youll be on your own if attacks on Iran continue

United States President Donald Trump has warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that he might find himself fighting on his own if Israel returns to war with Iran.

The warning on Monday came as Israel and Iran said they would pause attacks following their most serious escalation since a ceasefire took effect in ril.

Trump, who has reportedly grown increasingly exasperated with Netanyahu, demanded that both sides stop shooting in a post on his Truth Social platform and said that final negotiations towards peace would proceed subject to ignorance or stupidity getting in its way.

He also called Netanyahu and told him to stop the strikes, according to media reports.

In an interview with Axios, Trump said he had warned Netanyahu about the consequences of continuing the war.

I said, ‘Bibi, you better be careful, or you will be on your own very soon’, Trump said.

The flare-up began on Sunday, triggered by Israel’s deadly bombardment of Lebanon’s cital, Beirut. Iran – which has long said any peace deal with the US depends in part on an end to the fighting in Lebanon –responded with a wave of missiles at northern Israel.

Trump reportedly called Netanyahu on Sunday evening and asked him not to retaliate, but Israel launched attacks on Iran early on Monday.

Israeli forces struck Iranian air defence systems and a petrochemical plant, while Iran retaliated by hitting a similar facility in Haifa and targeting two Israeli airbases. Many of the missiles were intercepted over the occupied West Bank.

No deaths were reported on either side.

Israel plays down tensions

The exchanges complicated Trump’s push to end a war that the US and Israel launched on February 28. A ceasefire announced on ril 8 paused all-out warfare. But flare-ups in the Gulf have continued.

For his part, Netanyahu said in a televised statement that he had told Trump that Israel has a full right to self-defence, and we are exercising it as required.

Right now, the fire at the front is contained, because after we hit the terrorist regime in Tehran, it stopped attacking us, he said.

Netanyahu also warned that should Iran make the mistake of resuming attacks against us, we will respond with full force.

Israel’s ambassador to Washington, Yechiel Leiter, downplayed reports of tension between the US and Israeli leaders, telling Fox News that sometimes, lovers have a spat.

He said that while Netanyahu had decided to lower the temperature at Trump’s request, the US president understands full well that Israel cannot absorb ballistic missiles into our country without responding.

Iran’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Esmaeil Baghaei, blamed Washington for the escalation.

The US is directly responsible, he said. They are party to the ceasefire negotiations. Therefore, any act in violation of the ceasefire, be it through the interception of vessels [in the Strait of Hormuz], the targeting of southern Lebanon by Israel, or any other event, will cause the United States to be directly responsible for the escalation in the region.

Iran’s First Vice President Mohammad Reza Aref said the operation against Israel, dubbed Nasr or victory, showcased a new level of deterrence from mighty Iran and that Israel had been forced to beg once again for a ceasefire.

Behind the scenes, diplomatic efforts continue.

Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian posted on X that Tehran was still at the negotiating table, while Iran’s ambassador to the United Nations, Amir Saeid Iravani, said that Washington and Tehran, through Pakistan as an intermediary, are presenting and exchanging views towards an agreement.

Iravani told The Associated Press news agency he was hopeful that very soon the two sides would reach a conclusion.

Pakistan’s Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif said efforts for a peaceful diplomatic solution was ongoing earnestly and painstakingly and called for restraint, especially when the final objective is just about to be achieved.

He also said Israel and Iran’s exchange of fire was a reminder of the dangers associated with a tenuous ceasefire and the unbearable consequences it may lead to.

Attacks on Lebanon continue

The escalation on Monday also drew in Yemen’s Houthi rebels.

The group fired missiles at Israel early in the morning and declared a complete ban on Israeli maritime navigation in the Red Sea, warning that all Israeli movements would be considered legitimate military targets.

Later on Monday, air raid sirens sounded in the Israeli port city of Eilat, with the military saying a suspected aerial target was launched from Yemen.

Violence has also continued in southern Lebanon.

An Israeli strike killed five people in the city of Tyre, while another, in the Nabatieh district, left seven dead. A third strike in Marwanieh killed two people, the Lebanese Ministry of Health said.

Phyllis Bennis, a fellow at the Institute for Policy Studies, said Trump was trying to give an impression that he was tougher on Israel than he actually is.

The words could be significant if they were matched by actions, she told Al Jazeera.

As long as they’re sending billions of dollars directly to the Israeli military, and as long as they’re protecting Israel from being held accountable in the International Court of Justice or the International Criminal Court, as long as those actions don’t change, the words just don’t mean very much, she added.

US Navy attacks tanker with 24 Indian crew, all rescued

US Navy attacks tanker with 24 Indian crew, all rescued

A fire erupted on a Palau-flagged tanker with a crew of 24 Indians when it was attacked by the US Navy off the coast of Oman on Monday, and all crew members of the vessel sanctioned by the US were later evacuated to safety by the Oman Air Force.

The fire was reported by the crew of MT Marivex, which was not carrying any cargo, at 1.30 pm, Opesh Kumar Sharma, director in the shipping ministry, told a media briefing. The vessel was well out of the Strait of Hormuz, and well clear to the south, he said, adding that all the crew members were safe.

Several hours later, the crew members were evacuated by a helicopter of the Oman Air Force. The Indian embassy in Muscat thanked Omani authorities for rescuing all 24 Indian crew members in a social media post.

An audio recording of a SOS message sent by the crew of Marivex featured a crew member saying that the vessel was on fire after a US Navy attack by missile on our engine room.

People familiar with the matter said on condition of anonymity Marivex had been black-listed and sanctioned by the Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), the financial intelligence and enforcement agency of the US treasury department. OFAC is the body that acts against vessels involved in violating US sanctions on the sale of Iranian and Russian oil.

The vessel is not Indian-owned. Over the last few days, Marivex made four attempts to evade the US blockade of Iranian ports, one of the people said. On three occasions, the vessel turned away after repeated warnings by the US Navy.

The people said Marivex made a fourth attempt to get past the US blockade by using Oman’s territorial waters on Monday. The vessel switched off its signal devices so that it could go undetected. This pattern made it clear the vessel’s intentions were not above board, they said.

The shipping ministry coordinated with the external affairs ministry, the Indian mission in Oman, the defence ministry and Indian Navy to ensure the safety of the crew members.

The Forward Seamen’s Union of India, one of the country’s oldest organisations representing seafarers, said in a social media post that the attack on a vessel carrying 24 Indian seafarers…is a matter of serious concern. It added, FSUI urges swift and coordinated action to ensure the safety of the crew, provide support to their families, and uphold the security of seafarers at sea.

Oman is located adjacent to the Strait of Hormuz, which has been blocked by Iran since the start of a conflict with Israel and the US in February. The attack on Marivex came against the backdrop of a fresh flare-up in hostilities between Israel and Iran since Sunday.

Ten Indians have died in West Asia since the start of the conflict, including three seafarers who were killed in attacks on merchant vessels in the early days of the hostilities.
