Major AI Outage: Grok, Claude Are Down. ChatGPT, Gemini Back Up

UPDATE: 1:25 pm OpenAI status page says that it is now fully operational. We’re unaware of any problems affecting our system. The chatbot has also started responding to questions. Gemini appears to also be running.
Grok is currently showing a message that it “is experiencing issues” and that “Some of the features could be slow or unavailable.” The page tells users to visit status.x.ai, which is updated regularly. However, there are no service interruptions currently visible.
Any queries on Claude return “This response did not load”.
Original Story
You’re probably experiencing issues if you try to use AI today. There is a widespread outage affecting many AI platforms, including OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Anthropic’s Claude.
Outages of OpenAI services started around 10:10 a.m., as shown by Downdetector. The outage has been increasing rapidly over the last hour. There are over 36,000 reports of the outage, which is widespread.
OpenAI’s status page states that it applied a patch and “monitoring recovery” following 24 minutes of downtime in ChatGPT or Codex. PCMag’s reporter, who had been experiencing problems with the service, says that it returned shortly after the fix but now works slowly. OpenAI is yet to reveal what the cause of this outage was.
Google Gemini also saw an increase in reports at the same time. However, Google is yet to confirm a problem. A PCMag reporter discovered that Gemini would return an error for any input. However, reports from Downdetector were much smaller. This suggests it’s not affecting all users.
Anthropic’s Claude was experiencing issues earlier that day, with a slight spike of reports around 8:30 a.m. The first wave of problems affected Claude Sonnet 5, while the second was more widespread. First, the Claude Sonnet 5 was affected directly. A second wave of problems hit other models such as Mythos/Fable 5.1 or Opus 5.
Anthropic has announced that it is rolling out a patch to fix its problems. The company says that the affected models include Opus 5 as well as Opus 4.8, with recovery happening on Fable and Opus 4 models.
Both Downdetector and X’s Grok AI platform appear to be experiencing issues, as does the AI agent Cursor.
Cloudflare, however, says that it does not experience downtime, in spite of reports from Downdetector. Cloudflare does not currently experience any major service interruptions. Any reporting which deviates is inaccurate. Our services operate normally.
It’s a very unusual outage that affects all these services simultaneously, particularly since the problem doesn’t appear to have affected other companies outside of AI. As we receive more information, we’ll update the article.
Disclosure: Ziff Davis (PCMag parent company) filed a suit against OpenAI, alleging that it violated Ziff Davis’ copyrights by training and operating AI systems.

The gap between the monthly cost of charging a Tesla Cybertruck vs filling a Chevy Colorado in the US is mind-blowing

Many people assume that filling the tank on a Chevy Cybertruck is cheaper than charging it.
There are many shades and colors of gray in the debate between electric and gasoline cars.
Depending on the factors, charging an EV could be cheaper.
There’s also another factor to think about.
This is the main catch
It’s time to address the elephant in the living room, which is about the same size as a Cybertruck plus a Colorado combined.
This comparison was probably easier in the past because it was more straight-forward.
There are a lot of ways to charge EVs, from Superchargers and home chargers, to other platforms. And even though the price to fill up your tank with gasoline is constant, it’s still insanely different in each state and country.
Chargers at home are generally cheaper.
If you are able to charge at home, then the answer will always be the same. The EV is cheaper.
The rest is all up to chance.
We did some math and came up with the following result.
Tesla Cybertruck versus Chevy Colorado over 15,000 miles
The average annual mileage for the US is 15,000 miles.
Cybertruck costs around $1.100-$1.200 for 15,000 miles. That’s equivalent to $7.50 to $8 per 100 mile charge at home.
A standard gasoline-powered Chevy Colorado, on the other hand, costs approximately $16-17 per 100-miles (averaging at 21 MPG), or about $2,500 per year (given and taken).
The monthly charge for the Cybertruck is more than twice as high.
This is again assuming that you are able to charge your phone at home. Some people cannot.
There’s also another factor to think about.
Tesla Cybertruck is more than just expensive
Charging an EV in general is less expensive than fueling a vehicle, however, it depends how much you are willing to pay upfront.
The Cybertruck costs more than the Chevy Colorado in this instance.
Tesla Cybertruck’s entry level starts at $69 990. This is more than twice the price of 2026 Chevy Denver, which begins at $32,400.
When you add that up, it will take many miles for the Cybertruck to be more financially convenient than the Chevy.

Goldman Sachs Warns Oil Could Hit $120 as Shipping Risks Rise

Goldman Sachs says that oil prices may surge up to $120 per barrel if the attacks against shipping in Middle East increase.
Bloomberg TV interviewed Daan Struyven on Monday, the co-head for global commodities at Goldman Sachs.
The price of oil has risen in recent weeks due to renewed hostilities. It soared early Monday morning in Asian trades, reaching its highest level since July.
This weekend, the situation escalated after the U.S. announced that it had hit three Iranian oil tanks in response to the IRGC’s use of ballistic missiles against two U.S. Warships.
After the attack, Iranian Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf declared that “proportionate response” was over and that Iran’s future retaliations will be “faster and heavier.”
Iran said that it will announce in the next few days a “new exclusion zone”, which “will start from the U.S. Naval Blockade line, extend towards the Strait of Hormuz and continue from this side into the Persian Gulf.”
Mohsenrezaei said that any ship found to be entering this area in order to pass through the Strait of Hormuz, and which is identified, will appear on the sanctions list.
Brent Crude was trading at more than $97 a barrel early on Monday. The U.S. benchmark WTI Crude was also above $92 per barrel.
Struyven, a Goldman analyst who spoke to Bloomberg, said that Goldman believes “significant upside in crude oil prices” but also added that investors would bet more on the rising prices of natural gas and refined products.
Experts say that in gas and fuel markets, the supply shocks were greater than on the crude oil market.

Apple iPhone: Wait — there will be a new iPhone model soon. Prices on the existing model typically drop when it launches.
Black Friday is the best time to buy video games and high-ticket technology.
Winter clothing: The new season collection is now in stores, but wait until November to get the biggest discounts on winter staples such as coats and booties.
Best Labor Day deals: Top picks
Best Labor Day deals: Rare deals
Best Labor Day deals: Style
Our style expert says that retailers are clearing summer stock to make way for the fall and winter. So, you can expect steep discounts over Labor Day on items like sundresses and sandals. I recommend shopping for the current season. Stock up now on lighter (and cheaper) clothes, and then grab the discounted styles of fall when the next round of sales comes around in October. Browse more style deals here.
Best Labor Day deals: Home
Our home expert says that now is the time to buy the outdoor furniture you have been wanting. Keep an eye on deals for pillows and mattresses. Mattress prices are usually at their lowest around Presidents’ Day. However, you may still be able to find some great discounts during this period. If you’re looking for new bedding and towels that are luxurious, I recommend waiting until the “white sales” in January. These items usually have even greater discounts. Click here to see more deals on home products.
Best Labor Day deals: Kitchen
Our kitchen expert says that as the seasons change, deals on kitchen equipment start to appear. Many of these products are useful all year round. Air fryers and cookware are great for summer, but also useful as we move into the fall. Black Friday is when you’ll see the biggest price cuts on larger appliances like refrigerators and ranges. If you can wait until November, then it might be worth buying one. Browse more kitchen deals here.
Best Labor Day deals: Tech
Our tech expert says that if you have been waiting to upgrade your tablet or laptop, it may now be time. The AI industry is creating a huge demand for components and memory chips, so the low prices we experienced in late 2017 and early 2018 are not returning. What’s the exception? Amazon devices. Prime Day is coming up, so I would wait to buy Kindles or Echo devices until they are heavily discounted. Find more deals on tech here.

I Took a 6-Figure Job at Amazon in Between Bouts of Entrepreneurship

The following essay was based on a conversation with Seun Philips, a 42-year old Los Angeles-based founder of Stemnetics. The essay has been edited to make it shorter and clearer.
Technology has always been my passion. In third grade my family bought our first computer, and we played games together. My father told me that I had a good aptitude for math and science and I should consider becoming an engineer.
In 2006 I received a bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering from the University of Michigan. On campus, we had a job fair. Motorola was there, and I remembered that my next class would be starting soon. Just one resume was enough for me. The interview went well and they called me. I was hired as an electrical engineer at Motorola, focusing on accessories compatibility.
After a brief stint with Amazon, I became an entrepreneur. I have learned many lessons that I use today in my own business.
With one of my Motorola co-workers, I founded a non-profit organization
In March 2009, I started Project Syncere at Chicago. The mission of Project Syncere is to provide pathways to STEM careers for students who are underrepresented. It was my first business experience, other than selling CDs at high school. I am still on the Board.
After meeting my wife, I moved to Detroit with her. In January 2014 I started Stemnetics, a STEM program for children in Michigan. We didn’t want to expand Project Syncere into another state.
After I had my son, I stopped working full time as an entrepreneur
The Michigan Science Center offered me a position as vice president for education and engagement. The job was offered to me because I needed financial stability after having my first child.
Through Indeed and Craigslist I found a full-time and part-time educator to keep the program going while I used the earnings from my science center as a bootstrap for the business. Stemnetics was important to me because I could see the potential.
My wife’s work will take us to California in 2022
A former colleague informed me that Amazon Robotics was currently hiring. It was my job to identify companies and startups that were developing technology which could help improve logistics and supply chain. I am familiar with the ecosystem of startups and enjoy bringing people together. I was intrigued.
Six interviews were conducted over Zoom. Each interview focused on a specific Amazon leadership principle. I was most impressed by the principles of customer obsession, frugality, ownership and bias towards action. Stemnetics still uses them: focus on the customer, act quickly and be resourceful without compromising your quality.
The interviewing process began at six in the morning because I am on Pacific Time. My manager was the last person I interviewed. The salary I received was six figures.
I was appointed senior partnership manager in June 2022 for Amazon’s $1 billion Industrial Innovation Fund
I was responsible for establishing partnerships between companies and new startups.
The office was remote, but I made many trips to the fulfillment center and its offices. Amazon’s office was different than other Big Tech companies I had heard of: It consisted of standard cubicles, and there were labs in which you could watch the testing.
To understand the way everything worked, I needed to watch robots at work in a fulfillment centre. Why is very important to me. Why is it so important to me? The sight was very nice.
Amazon has taught me how to start with the customer and work my way backwards
Working backwards was something I really found useful when working at Amazon. Start by creating a press release that describes the benefit to customers you want to achieve. This gives you an idea of what to build.
A Wellness Day was another cool idea at Amazon. It’s not a day off, but a time for personal development or catching up. The manager of my manager ensured that no meetings had been scheduled. It was all about the wellness.
The length of my stay was 1 year
A school principal approached me at a sportsbar after I had spent a little over a year working at Amazon. He said he wanted to create a STEM laboratory. We decided to meet after I informed him that I was a STEM program manager.
Then I showed the program to his class. After that, the school district was informed. The moment Stemnetics demanded my attention, I knew it was time.
You’ll always feel some anxiety when you leave a job that pays six figures.
There were many opportunities at Amazon and I had a very good relationship with my manager, but it was really more that I bet on myself.
The Michigan curriculum was used to expand into California. I would pack up the boxes with the teaching materials that I had purchased on Amazon in the early hours. When my wife came down to visit, our living room was full of materials. I would then drop off the boxes at various schools. I would also train other instructors and teach students.
We have a training office today with storage for materials, and we also employ program managers to help in the process. We have 35 employees and run over 30 programs in Michigan and California. I have surpassed Amazon’s earnings. We’re having a great impact.
The best part of my work is when I visit a classroom to see students screaming in excitement. Our focus is on igniting the interest of children and helping them to become problem-solvers, resilient and confident.

$40 trillion U.S. national debt just got uglier as interest payments rise to $1.25 trillion a year

Doubleline, an investment management company, noted in a recent report that by 2025 the net federal interest payments on the U.S. national debt, now at $40 trillion, will surpass the previous record of 18.4%. The U.S. collects nearly 19% (or $1.25 trillion) of its total tax and revenue to pay interest, which is equivalent to the 2026 Defense Budget.
Increasing interest payments can create a vicious cycle. The government has to borrow more money to pay the interest and is then less able to invest in infrastructure, education or other areas that promote growth.
According to the Kobeissi letter, a global market commentary, interest expenses as a percent of revenues have tripled since 2015. The Congressional Budget Office predicts that interest expense will reach 25% in 2036.
The Kobeissi Letter posted on social media that “the US debt crisis has never been seen before.” These projections are based on the assumption that there will be no recession or major slowdown in this time period.
How the interest rate on debt today is different than in 1991
In 1991, when the U.S. was still recovering from recession and the oil shocks of the Gulf War, it had a booming economy. At the time, the high demand for Treasuries pushed the yields to 8%. This was down from over 10% during previous decades.
Doubleline said that the situation is very different today. Doubleline argued that the government was able to handle an interest rate of 8% when debts were smaller. But this is not true today. The public debt in 1991 was 44% of U.S. Gross Domestic Product. Today, it is more than 100%. The government still has to spend more because of the lower interest rate, even though the debt is so large.
Analysts wrote: “The federal interest burden is at a new record, but the yield on long bonds has not reached that record.” The yield may seem normal by historical standards but not the government’s reaction to it.
In order to complicate matters, hyperscalers and major tech firms are now turning towards debt markets. AI companies will issue $225 billion of bonds during the first half 2026. This capital spending may worsen national debt, as many of the investments are tax-deductible. It also bucked a trend where private companies borrow less when governments were borrowing more. Tech giants are flocking to bonds with a 10-to-30 year term to raise the long-term funds needed to build out AI. This is straining the U.S. economy and forcing the government to offer higher interest rates to maintain demand.
Ed Yardeni, a Wall Street veteran and economist who has been in the business for over 30 years, wrote a note recently that said: “Capital is not flowing to Treasuries because it’s going into corporate bonds. Treasury yields had to go up to clean out the market.” The AI revolution has a crowding out effect that is causing Treasury yields rise.
Scott Bessent, U.S. Treasury secretary, doubled Treasury buybacks for 10-to-30 year bonds from $2 billion up to $4 billion. This move surprised investors, and was a rare example of direct involvement by the Treasury chief. Doubleline analysts said the strategy blurred between managing cash and controlling markets. It also showed how crucial a time it is for the U.S. to manage interest rates on its debt.
Analysts said that “Net interest expenses have already reached a new record as a share of revenues, and the Treasury is continuing to finance large budget deficits on a market where private capital demand is high.” The level of long bonds is therefore more important than what the comparison with historical data suggests.
