In a police statement, officers investigating the theft in London’s Pimlico of a mobile in October 2025 arrested “a 28 year old man on suspicion of dealing with stolen goods”. The arrest occurred on Wednesday, April 29 at an address in Peckham. “The man was taken to police custody and then bailed. The phone has not been recovered. McSweeney did not disclose to the police that he was a senior government official or that his phone had been stolen. The police published the transcript of McSweeney’s 999 call in March after criticism that they had not properly investigated this theft. McSweeney told a parliamentary panel last month that he immediately informed Downing Street of the theft and hoped they could track the phone. McSweeney was asked if his phone had messages about Lord Mandelson’s nomination. He replied: “Probably not a lot of information about his appointment which hasn’t been made available to No. 10. “He said Downing Street had done research on the appointment when Lord Mandelson had been sacked and he was asked to “share emails and messages about the appointment”. “I shared everything I had in September, more than a week before my phone was stolen with the No. 10 team.”
