Naomi Osaka overpowers Aryna Sabalenka to reach the Wimbledon quarterfinals
LONDON, England (AP) – When two powerful men meet up, the ability to strike first can be crucial.
This was Naomi Osaka’s plan against Aryna Sablalenka, the top-ranked player in Wimbledon’s most anticipated matchup so far.
Sabalenka defeated Osaka at all of their three previous meetings this year, including the French Open final last month.
On the clay courts, I felt that she was pushing back on me a lot. Osaka stated, “I just did it first to her.”
Osaka’s tactics paid off, as she beat Sabalenka 7-6, 6-2 on Sunday, to make it into the quarterfinals of the All England Club at last for the very first time.
Sabalenka was overwhelmed by Osaka’s speed and her flat, fast groundstrokes.
We’re both big-ball strikers. There’s no way I will start running all over the court to try to get her to make an error. “I can only concentrate on my strengths,” Osaka stated.
I just served really well because the grass was there. “I also wanted to be the first in the rally.”
Osaka’s balls were flying faster than ever on this warmest day in the history of the tournament. The temperature reached 82 degrees Fahrenheit (28 degrees Celsius) during the match.
Sabalenka stated, “She outclassed me.” I felt that she was at an incredible level.
Sabalenka beat Osaka not only in Paris but also at Indian Wells (California), Madrid, and California this year.
Osaka admitted, “that was a real bummer.” So I decided to change it.
After the match, Osaka did a couple of fist-pump, smiled briefly, and placed her racket above her head. She then spun in joy to celebrate her career’s first win at Centre Court.
Osaka stated, “It has been a while since I had such a good time on the court.” It means so much to me that I’m able to play here.
Mental Health and Maternity
Osaka was the first player to beat a top-ranked opponent since Ash Barty in Beijing, 2019. Since beating Ash Barty at Beijing 2019 This was all before Osaka became a former number one. In 2021, Osaka took a break from her tour in order to take care of her mental health. She also missed 2023 due to maternity leave.
Osaka’s daughter celebrated her third birthday on Thursday.
Osaka, who was beaten by Iga Swaatek in the Italian Open last May, said that she had “shut everyone out” of her team. She “literally got on a flight back to home.”
She said, “It was not the best thing I could have done.” “I was ashamed of what I had done.” After that, I told myself that, “Hey, it’s getting close to 30. I should really enjoy this time.” Tennis is important, but there are other things in my life. “I have to cherish tennis the best I can and not put too much emphasis on it.”
Sabalenka: ‘Forget tennis’
Sabalenka is now failing to make it past the final stages of the Grand Slam for the second consecutive time. Sabalenka admitted that she wanted to “quit tennis” after a shocking meltdown in last month’s quarterfinals of the French Open against Diana Shnaider.
Sabalenka stated that she would “get drunk completely, forget tennis and try to improve her shape” this time.
Sabalenka has won four Grand Slams, and Osaka also. Their major titles have all been won on hard court — the Australian Open, U.S. Open.
Osaka just won her first final on a grass court. Last weekend, she had to withdraw from her match against Karolina Manyova in Bad Homburg due to a foot injury.
Muchova will now be her opponent. She beat Barbora Krajcikova, the 2024 Wimbledon Champion, 7-5,5-7,6-3.
Kimono walk-on fashion
Osaka wore the same white kimono that she wore for walk-ons during Wimbledon, which was inspired from a Quentin Tarantino film character.
The kimono, unlike the walk-on suits that Osaka wore at the French Open “were being sewn immediately after my win,” was made in Japan. “It’s not as if (the designer can create a new thing each time),” says the Japanese designer.
Osaka wears variations of the same outfit. In her last two matches she has worn “the free-robe style” from an anime named Bleach.
Aces and Winners
Osaka put 87% (compared to Sabalenka’s 69%) of her first serve into play, saving the two breakpoints she was faced with.
Osaka led the match by 8-5 on aces, and 21-15 for winners. The game lasted just over 1 1/2 hours.
Sabalenka asked, “What can I do when the player is hitting all the marks and just going in for the shot without fear?” She was going all in.
Sabalenka continued, “I was not world number one today, level-wise,” she added. 1.”
Coco Breaks Through
Coco Gauff, who beat Belinda Bencic by scores of 4-6,3-6,6-4, just minutes before curfew at 11 pm, reached her first Wimbledon quarterfinals.
Next, Gauff will face fellow American Jessica Pegula. She defeated Iva Jovic, another American, with a score of 4-6,6-3,6-1.
Djokovic edges Federer
Novak Djokovic won his 106th All England Club match, earlier on Centre Court. He beat Roman Safiullin, the 132nd ranked qualifier, 7-6(6), 6-3, 3-3, 6-3.
Djokovic’s next opponent will be Felix Auger-Aliassime. He beat Alejandro Davidovich Fokina with 6-7 (4) 7-6 (6) 6-3 6-7 (2) 6-1.
Jannik Sinner, the top-ranked player, beat Japanese qualifier Shintaro mochizuki with 6-3, 7-6(0), and 6-3. He will now face Jan-Lennard Struff who won after Hubert Hurkacz quit in the 5th set, trailing by 4-2 due to an abdominal strain.

UFC 329 has analyst wondering if Topuria is rethinking Pimblett fight
Michael Bisping says that after UFC 322, Paddy Pimblett has become a greater threat to Ilia topuria.
Pimblett’s grudge is with Topuria, the former UFC lightweight champ (17-1 MMA and 9-1 UFC), after he submitted Benoit St Denis during Saturday night’s main event at T-Mobile Arena, Las Vegas. Pimblett recovered from losing his interim title to Justin Gaethje, who then went on to defeat Topuria in the UFC Freedom 250. Bisping believes that Pimblett and Topuria is a fight of epic proportions the UFC must capitalize on.
Bisping stated on his YouTube page that it won’t be Justin Gaethje who will face Paddy Pimblett. But don’t be alarmed, there are a lot of people and challenges that Paddy Pimblett can face, and, by God, they all deserve it. It wouldn’t matter to me if it were a rematch against Justin Gaethje. Ilia Topuria and I have a long history. The two do not get along. They’ve said a lot to each other.
They squared off in the UFC octagon. Paddy was huge, and I’m not sure Ilia wants to fight him after what he just did with Benoit Saint Denis. You can’t ignore Ilia Topuria or all that he has achieved because of his loss to Justin Gaethje. He’s only going to be a stronger version of himself and him against Paddy will be a huge match.”
Topuria was beaten by Gaethje on his way to the doctor-stoppage in Round 4. Gaethje’s first professional defeat was a surprise.

Zendaya Makeup Look at the Odyssey Premiere: Shop Online
Variety could receive a commission if you buy a product or service that has been independently reviewed through our website.
On Tuesday, Athena was incarnated for the hundreds of people gathered in front of AMC Lincoln Square. The photographers who crowded the carpet were also able to see her. Zendaya donned a winged sculptural gown for the New York premier of “The Odyssey” paired with the minimalest beauty look of the press tour.
Casillas’ Instagram posts revealed that he left his actor’s eyes mostly untouched. He did not use any mascara or visible eye shadow, but instead opted for naturally fluffed eyebrows and “ghost” lashes. “For the premier, we wanted to the skin look fresh, glowing, and naturally sun kissed,” Casillas said. The makeup was minimal with glowing skin as the focal point and soft heat placed in the areas where sunlight would normally hit.
Casillas prepared Zendaya’s skin using Prada Beauty (including Augmented Skin Cream, Augmented Skin Eye Cream), before blending the Augmented Skin Essence with the Reveal Skin Optimizing Foundation to create a light finish. Then, Caffe (a brown mocha) and Cherry (a red true), Prada cream-to powder blushes, were applied to areas that would be naturally exposed to sunlight. He applied Prada Astral Pink Balm to the lips.
This restrained look was a contrast to the more dramatic style of her outfits. Law Roach dressed Zendaya up in an ivory Matieres Fecales dress from the Fall 2025 collection of this Parisian label. This design had a distressed feathered detailing, an asymmetrical sculpted bodice and floor-length wings that extended from the back. Roach, according to reports, asked the label more than two year ago to reserve this runway look exclusively for Zendaya.
The floral earrings and sculptural Christian Louboutin shoes completed her look. She also wore more than 30 carats worth of Chopard Diamonds.
Below, you can shop all of the products Zendaya has used to prepare for her “Odyssey’s” premier.

Look: Zendaya, Anne Hathaway wear ethereal looks at ‘The Odyssey’ premiere
The Odyssey’s Zendaya, Anne Hathaway and other stars wore beautiful looks to the red carpet on Tuesday.
Hathaway and Zendaya attended the New York Premiere of “The Fault in Our Stars” at AMC Lincoln Square Theater, Manhattan.
Zendaya donned literal wings in her outfit from French fashion label Matieres Fecale. This white dress also had a plunging slit at the thigh and short train.
In an Instagram post, Matieres Fécale revealed that Zendaya’s stylist Law Roach had “asked us 2 years ago to save this gown for Z.”
The brand stated, “We kept to our word and declined so many requests. But we knew that this would be the perfect fit for an important piece in our archives.”
Hathaway, pregnant with the third child she is expecting with Adam Shulman wore an empire waisted white Prada gown, with crystal embellishments on both bodice and skirt.
Christopher Nolan (writer, director, producer of The Odyssey), along with Matt Damon and Tom Holland as well as Lupita Ngong’o, Charlize Theron and Charlize Theron’s cast, were also in attendance.
The Odyssey is an epic fantasy based on Homer’s ancient Greek poem. Damon plays Odysseus the King of Ithaca, who meets gods and creatures on his journey back home following the Trojan War.
The film stars Hathaway in the role of Odysseus’ wife Penelope; Holland, as Telemachus the son of Odysseus; Nyong’o, as Helen, the princess from Troy; Zendaya, as Athena the goddess, and Theron, as Calypso, the nymph.
The Odyssey is opening in cinemas on Friday.

Zendaya wraps ‘The Odyssey’ press tour in an otherworldly winged gown worthy of Athena
Zendaya channeled her inner Greek Goddess on the Christopher Nolan press tour, and once again proved that she, along with her stylist Law Roach are in an elite league. Zendaya has been wearing gowns that are a perfect representation of her character Athena. She is the Greek goddess of strategic warfare and wisdom. Her recent dresses have shield-like detailing, ethereal shapes, and subtle nods towards classical Greek sculpture. The 29-year old actress wore her most dramatic goddess look to the New York Premiere: a Matieres Fecales white gown with a feathered train, and sculptural wings.
Zendaya has remained the model for method dressing, whether she’s channeling “something new, nothing old, borrowed or blue”, as Zendaya did on the press tour of The Drama, or wearing haute couture outfits with spider icons to promote Spider-Man Brand New Day. Her Grecian style, which she wore for The Odyssey’s press tour as both a star in the movie industry and high fashion muse has left internet users speechless. She is really that girl.
Zendaya said to Deadline that she had a better cultural understanding of Homer’s epic poem. I think Greek mythology was fascinating, and it’s been really interesting to learn about Athena, her journey, what she represents and her story.
Yahoo has put together a collection of all the outfits the Emmy-winning actress wore to promote The Odyssey.
A gown with winged wings worthy of an ending
What do you wear at the end of a press tour that is filled with memorable outfits? The gown is part Greek goddess, part runway show and part angel. Matieres Fecales’s number had a mythical feel, complete with feather-draped wings and a strapless dress with dramatic train. Custom Louboutin heels that seemed to float added to the effect.
Modern-day gladiator goddess
Can she get any chicer than this? Zendaya was seen in New York City in July wearing a white dress from Alberta Ferretti’s spring/summer collection 2008. This dress with its plunging, deep neckline, and gold-and silver chains cascading down the sides was worn with Sophia Webster’s classic, high-heeled gladiator shoes. What a contemporary gladiator!
The summer dress with a twist
Zendaya as Jacquemus?! Say less. The actress chose a white, crisp dress from the spring/summer ready-to wear collection of the brand for her Today appearance on the 13th July. This breezy, simple summer dress was notable for its subtle detailing and construction, such as the triangular midriff-baring shirt that turned into a high-low, ruffled midi skirt.
The perfect ruffle
Zendaya is always able to create a new look that’s stunning. She wore an outfit designed by Nicolas Ghesquiere for the Paris premiere of her film on 8 July. According to Louis Vuitton, the white open-cut dress was worn with a cropped bolero featuring a signature frilled Escargot Lace Detail. The bolero took Louis Vuitton nearly 800 hours of work to create.
Z combined the unique design with Christian Louboutin Stilettos, and Messika Jewellers.
The golden daydream
Zendaya was spotted in Paris, France on 7th July wearing a Givenchy spring 1997 couture look designed by Alexander McQueen. Vogue dubbed the collection “The Search for the Golden Fleece” and said it was inspired by the Greek myth about Jason and the Argonauts who were on a quest to find the golden fleece of a winged magical ram.
The white, long-sleeved dress was originally modeled by Debra. It featured an exaggerated collar and sleeves, which draped down over the forearms. Philip Treacy’s golden gilded face mask was the star of Z.
The red carpet: From the runway
Zendaya has worn looks straight off the runway before, but she may have beaten her own record for the quickest purchase of an unveiled couture piece.
She wore the final look of Schiaparelli’s Fall 2026 Couture Show, which had debuted in Paris only hours before.
Zendaya looked as stunning as she did on the runway. Maison Schiaparelli called it “illuminated” from within. The laced-up breastplate of the dress, which resembled marble sculptures and seemed to be molded around Zendaya’s body shape, highlighted the female figure.
The garment’s fringed skirt was paired with the top, featuring a white-to mirror ombre. Z’s final touches are equally stunning: Christian Louboutin off-white pumps, and a diamond multi-strand necklace by Chopard. Silvery white eyeshadow in her inner corners, and a crown braid completed her Greek goddess look.
A serene sartorial moment
Two! Zendaya changed into a more casual, relaxed outfit that still showed her inspirations from mythology after the Schiaparelli look. She wore an autumn 2026 Valentino gown with a bralette top in a shade of sage that resembled laurel, and a taupe drapey skirt, reminiscent a Grecian tunic. The look was effortless, and she finished it with Christian Louboutin shoes and diamond earrings from Haute Joaillerie.
Athena the proudest
What more can we add? Zendaya looked like the modern Athena as she kicked off The Odyssey’s press tour in an ivory column gown by Jacquemus on 5th July. The minimalist dress, which featured a halter neckline, pom-pom trim, and an open back, appeared perfectly tailored from the front. The garment also featured a built-in head scarf, which added a subtle touch of Grecian elegance.
