Three people, two women and a man, have been confirmed dead after a three-storey building that was being used as a church collapsed on worshippers in the Ghanaian capital, Accra, on Sunday.. Interior Minister Muntaka Mohammed-Mubarak said 20 others, most of them women and children, had been rescued and were being treated in various hospitals. There was “90-95% certainty that we no longer [have] any persons [trapped]”, he added.. Emergency teams worked through the night under floodlights searching for victims inside the structure’s remains.. The cause of its collapse, which happened after heavy rain, is unknown, with the interior minister saying investigations are under way.. The building itself, which was part of a school in Accra’s New Town area, was being used despite lying unfinished for several years, according to locals.. “What we can say is that there was a total of 23 people… It’s a very sad day for all of us,” Mohammed-Mubarak said.. Earlier reports had initially confirmed two deaths and 14 rescued, but the minister said the latest figures of 20 rescued had been cross-checked with various sources, including the ambulance services.. He acknowledged that it had been difficult to determine how many people had been in the building at the time of its collapse, and commended emergency responders for their quick response and rescue efforts through the night.. The national fire service has posted images on X of workers at the site as an agitated crowd mill around the scene.. Eyewitnesses reported hearing trapped victims calling for help under the rubble, describing the incomplete building as poorly constructed with no major maintenance since construction started.. “Everybody in the community knows the building is very weak, yet they allowed services and activities inside,” an eyewitness said.. Operations to check for any more worshippers are continuing and the debris is being cleared.. The incident has reignited the debate about the structural integrity of some of the buildings in the country.. It has also reminded people of the 2012 collapse of a multi-storey shopping centre that was attributed to poor construction.. Australian police have shot and killed Dezi Freeman after the double-murderer spent seven months on the run.. A well-known conspiracy theorist, Freeman gunned down two police officers on his property in the small Victorian town of Porepunkah last August, before fleeing into dense bushland and evading extensive searches.. Victoria Police say a man was shot dead after an hours-long standoff at a rural property in the state’s north-east on Monday morning. Chief Commissioner Mike Bush said the man is believed to be Freeman, 56, but formal identification is still underway.. “Today an evil man is dead,” said Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan. “It’s over.”. Police say they surrounded a building – described as a cross between a shipping container and a long caravan – on a rural property around 5:30 local time.. After three hours and multiple police pleas, a man believed to be Freeman came outside and was shot dead.. Details are still being confirmed, Bush told reporters, but he believes Freeman emerged wrapped in a blanket and armed with a gun, possibly one taken from one of the slain officers back in August.. “Our ultimate goal was to arrest the person,” Bush said.. “There was an opportunity for him to surrender peacefully but he did not.”. No officers were hurt during the operation, police said, which will be investigated, as is standard in police shootings.. The squad sent to Freeman’s property on 26 August was there to search it over an investigation into sex offences, when two senior constables – Neal Thompson and Vadim de Waart – were killed by Freeman.. Their families were the first to be told about Freeman’s death, Bush said, adding that it would take 24 to 48 hours to confirm the identity of the body.. “Should [his identity] be confirmed… this brings closure to what was a tragic and terrible event.”. Two Australian states will offer free public transport to incentivise people not to drive as fuel prices soar due to the war in the Middle East.. Victoria, home to Melbourne, has said it will have free travel throughout April, while Tasmania has said commuters will not need to pay until the end of June. Other state governments have so far declined to follow suit.. It comes as the federal government announced it would halve the nation’s fuel excise tax for three months to ease pressure on motorists’ wallets.. Australia is among a host of nations that have seen fuel prices increase sharply since the start of the US-Israel war with Iran and the effective closure of the Strait of Hormuz.. Myanmar’s military chief Min Aung Hlaing has been nominated for the presidency as parliament convened on Monday, following a general election from which the biggest opposition parties were excluded.. Min Aung Hlaing is certain to be chosen, as he was nominated in parliament alongside two loyalists who are very unlikely contenders for president.. He has been sanctioned by many Western countries for leading a military coup five years ago.. In the ensuing civil war, thousands of people have been killed and millions have been displaced. Large areas of the country remain under the control of armed opposition groups.. The general elections, held between December and January, were touted by the junta as a pathway to peace.. But the vote was widely viewed as a sham, with many popular parties banned from standing and large areas of the country not allowed to participate because of the civil war.. The regime has rejected this criticism, maintaining that the vote was free and fair.. Still, around 90% of the members of Myanmar’s new parliament owe their loyalty to Min Aung Hlaing, either as serving officers in the armed forces – which are guaranteed a quarter of the seats – or as elected candidates for the military’s own party.. The prospect of not getting it after the military party’s dismal performance in the 2020 election was a big factor behind the coup that ousted the elected government led by Aung San Suu Kyi.. But there are trade-offs: the constitution states that Min Aung Hlaing must give up command of the armed forces if he becomes president.. That carries risks. There are known to be senior commanders who are unhappy with his leadership.. He has already chosen a staunch loyalist, General Ye Win Oo to replace him, who has a reputation for brutal treatment of dissidents.. But the risk still remains that once Min Aung Hlaing no longer controls the military, he loses some of his power.. He has also created a new consultative council which he will head, which could give him continued authority over both military and civilian affairs.. What is not in doubt is that the new administration will essentially be just an expanded version of the current military junta, but in civilian clothes.. The partial US government shutdown has become the longest in American history, as lawmakers in Washington continue to fight over funding for the Department of Homeland Security (DHS).. On Sunday, the shutdown reached 44 days, surpassing the previous longest funding lapse, which ended in November 2025.. The current impasse has led to chaos at airports, due to a shortage of Transportation Security Administration (TSA) officers at security checkpoints as they go without pay cheques.. White House border czar Tom Homan said on Sunday TSA agents should start receiving pay early next week after President Donald Trump signed an order attempting to free up cash.. It is unclear, though, whether Trump’s executive order will face legal challenges, as the US constitution tasks Congress with authorising spending for the federal government.. Trump, while on Air Force One on Sunday evening, told reporters that he was prepared to “pay them [TSA agents] for as long as we need to” but urged Congress to pass a funding bill.. Homan also told CBS, the BBC’s US news partner, that even after the shutdown ended and funding for TSA was restored, Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents currently deployed to airports across the country to help with travel disruptions would remain “until the airports feel like they are 100%.”. “Look, we’re going to continue a nice presence there,” he told CBS’s Face the Nation with Margaret Brennan.. He noted the length of time would depend on how many TSA agents came back to work after being paid.. “We need to secure those airports. ICE is there to help our brothers and sisters in TSA,” Homan told CBS. “We’ll be there as long as they need us.”. But there does not appear to be an end in sight in the feud between Republicans and Democrats over funding for the DHS, which encompasses TSA, as well as immigration agencies and the primary emergency agency that handles natural disasters. Congress is currently on a two-week break and left town without a deal.. On Friday, lawmakers failed to agree a deal to re-open the DHS, which has been shut since 14 February.. The US Senate last week passed a compromise deal that would partially fund the DHS and aimed to alleviate airport travel delays, but Republicans in the US House of Representatives rejected the bill and instead voted to approve a short-term measure that funded the department in its entirety.. The Senate is not expected to pass that short-term measure, as Democrats have opposed funding for the department, which oversees Trump’s immigration agenda, without reforms, such as bans on Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents wearing masks and racial profiling.. Republicans in the House, though, have argued they would not support legislation without funding for immigration enforcement and voter ID requirements..
