Rain check: Your guide to protecting the gut from seasonal infections

Learn why your digestion suffers during the rains. (AI generated image). Rains bring much-needed respite from the sweltering, scorching heat, but off-season showers can take a toll on one’s digestive system. Acidity, indigestion, vomiting and gastritis are common problems that rear their ugly head during this period. To learn why it happens, and keep such gut issues in check, indianexpress.com reached out to health experts and got some clarity.. Dr Rakesh Kochhar, former head of the department of gastroenterology at PGIMER, Chandigarh, explained that many gastrointestinal diseases in the monsoon are primarily due to contaminated water and food. “The humidity, along with high heat, creates perfect conditions for bacteria, viruses and fungi to grow and multiply in both food and water. Sometimes, flooding and overflowing drains mean that the dirty water leaches into fresh water supplies, contaminating them,” he told indianexpress.com.. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. Contaminated food and water can lead to food poisoning, an infection or irritation of your digestive tract caused by bacteria. It acts after 12-48 hours, causing vomiting and diarrhoea within hours of ingestion. “If a person has a high fever or the fever lasts beyond 48 hours, there could be a need for antibiotics to be taken under a doctor’s supervision. Diseases like cholera or typhoid need to be confirmed by tests,” said Dr Kochhar.. Dr Tribhuvan Gulati, an expert on diabetes, thyroid, and metabolic disorders, added that consuming heavy foods slows digestion and can lead to acidity and indigestion during this time. “If you are prone to having chaat or juice from the streets, beware of stomach infection as the water used to prepare these things may be infected with bacteria,” he said.. How rain impacts gut health. (Freepik). How can you keep stomach issues at bay?. Dr Gulati shared some tips and tricks to avoid falling ill during this period:. Include probiotics in the diet: Opt for yoghurt, buttermilk, cheese, kefir, kombucha, and soybeans.  Mona Singh explains Gen Z parenting by stressing the importance of honesty with kids (Image source: @monajsingh/Instagram). In contrast to millennials’ parenting approaches, which often emphasize authority and discipline, many Gen Z parents prioritize fostering trust and affirming their children’s emotions. With social media flooded by videos offering parenting advice for the new generation, actor Mona Singh recently shared her views on the crucial role of honesty with children, spotlighting the essence of what the internet dubs the “Gen Z parenting style.” While promoting her project Maa Ka Sum in a recent interview, the Laal Singh Chadha actor emphasized that parenting Gen Z in today’s era is all about honesty. When I see my sister with her children, she’s so candid and straightforward with them. “I love that,” she said. Experts highlighted the significance of honesty between parents and Gen Z kids in fostering enduring trust. Dr. Murali Krishna, Visiting Consultant for Psychiatry & Counselling Services at Aster RV Hospital in Bangalore, emphasized that the bond between parents and their Gen Z kids hinges on honest communication, which builds lasting trust in an era where youth crave authentic connections. “Children create safe spaces to share their problems, mistakes, and feelings through open and truthful conversations with their parents.” “The process fosters greater emotional stability while reducing covert behavior and defiance,” Dr. Krishna said. The psychiatrist cautioned that a lack of honesty can foster mistrust between children and parents.

‘Meri taraf se hi hoga kuch’: Hina Khan on her low-conflict relationship with Rocky Jaiswal

In a candid chat, Hina Khan spoke about her relationship with husband Rocky Jaiswal, saying they almost never fight—perhaps once a year or even less—and when it does happen, it’s usually over something on her side. “He doesn’t believe in fighting, and no matter whose fault it is, he tries to work it out.” She feels they’ve reached a mature point in life, far from childish squabbles, insisting, “don’t coax me, don’t push me to do this.” “If it’s my fault, I will say sorry.”

During a Zoom interview, she also offered a direct take on how they handle disagreements: “It’s her fault; she’ll say sorry.” Her blunt honesty about their ups and downs challenges romantic stereotypes. No grand reconciliations or emotional drama—just accountability, composed discussion, and the subtle assurance of two grown-ups who view conflict not as a war zone.

But does a relationship with infrequent arguments indicate emotional maturity? Dr. Pavitra Shankar, Associate Consultant–Psychiatry at Aakash Healthcare, explains that the key isn’t the absence of conflict, but how a couple manages emotional differences. Does low conflict indicate emotional maturity? The explanation suggests that the issue is nuanced and depends on how effectively differences are navigated.
