Reality Fracture Vision Design Handoff, Part 2

Last week, I started sharing the handoff document that Reality Fracture’s Vision Design team gave to the Set Design team. Part one talks about the goals of the set and paired cards. Part two covers the setting of Reality Fracture.
Hexhaven
Another important way to play up the what-if theme was to pick a setting that hit the theme loudly and in a way most players would get. After exploring different options, we settled on Hexhaven, an alternate version of Strixhaven. Instead of enemy-color colleges with a general college feel, Hexhaven has ally-color colleges with a military school feel. Because “Yachting,” the previous set, takes place on Strixhaven, the audience will be familiar with it. The enemy-versus-ally contrast is loud (and fulfills a common request of the audience). To create some continuity with “Yachting,” each college kept one color and shifted the second to make it an ally-color combination. (The bolded color is the constant between the multiverses.)
Lorehold, the red-white history college becomes Forehold, the white-blue history college.
Quandrix, the green-blue math college, becomes Theorix, the blue-black math college.
Silverquill, the white-black language college, becomes Stingerquill, the black-red language college.
Prismari, the blue-red art college, becomes Melodari, the red-green art college.
Witherbloom, the black-green science college, becomes Everbloom, the green-white science college.
Unlike “Yachting,” the colleges play a smaller role in “Ziplining.” The set is not a faction set based around the colleges. Rather, the colleges serve as flavor for the ally-color draft archetypes. To reinforce this and to play up the military feel of Hexhaven, each college does not create its own “mascot” creature token. Instead, all five colleges create a 2/2 colorless Cadet token. Different colleges will interact with the Cadet tokens in different ways.
Everbloom Planetologist
2W
Sorcery
Create a 2/2 colorless Cadet creature token, then put a number of +1/+1 counters on it equal to the amount of life you gained this turn.
Increased Patrol
2B
Sorcery
Target opponent discards two cards. If they discard fewer than two cards this way, create a 2/2 colorless Cadet creature token.
Squad Leader
3R
Creature — Human Soldier
3/2
Trample
CARDNAME gets +1/+0 for each Cadet you control.
Whenever you attack, create a 2/2 colorless Cadet creature token that’s tapped and attacking.
Another way to create continuity between Strixhaven and Hexhaven is to reuse two of the mechanics from “Yachting” in “Ziplining,” but in much smaller amounts. First, magecraft returns, used mostly as it was in “Yachting,” but only in the three colors that have a “spells matter” theme: blue, black, and red.
Blood Mage
3B
Creature — Human Wizard
4/3
Magecraft — Whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell, this creature gains lifelink until end of turn.
Titanic Thaumaturge
4RR
Creature — Giant Wizard
5/7
Trample
Magecraft — Whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell, CARDNAME gets +2/+0 until end of turn.
Baral, Disgraced Authority
1U
Legendary Creature — Human Wizard
2/1
Magecraft — Whenever you cast or copy an instant or sorcery spell, target player mills two cards.
1U, T, Exile CARDNAME: Return target instant or sorcery spell from your graveyard to your hand.
Second, prepared spells return, but in a much more concentrated use. Each college has one prepared spell that shows up in a vertical cycle. The spell is a hybrid spell and is the same on every card. Here are the spells as of handoff:
Forehold Research
1(w/u)
Sorcery
Exile two cards from your graveyard. If you do, create a 2/2 colorless Cadet creature token.
White-blue makes use of the graveyard as a resource.
Theorix Levitation
(u/b)
Sorcery
Target creature you control gains flying until end of turn.
Blue-black wants a cheap spell to help it play nicely with its “spells matters” theme.
Stingerquill Address
1(b/r)
Sorcery
Target creature you control gets +2/+1 and gains haste until end of turn.
Black-red is aggressive and cares about having larger creatures.
Melodari Resources
2(r/g)
Sorcery
Create two Treasure tokens.
Red-green is the ramp archetype.
Everbloom Diagnosis
3(g/w)
Sorcery
Put two +1/+1 counters on target creature you control. You gain 2 life.
Green-white cares both about counters and gaining life.
In the story, Jace has acquired a specific spell from the Mystical Archive on Strixhaven and brought it to Hexhaven. There, he will be able to cast the spell and overwrite the Magic Multiverse with his version, but it will take time. A group of heroes from our world have come to stop him. Jace’s illusion army, the military students from Hexhaven, and doppelgängers of the invaders are trying to slow down the siege and give Jace enough time to cast the spell and enact his plan. This is how the colleges play into the larger story of this capstone event set.
I believe most of this stayed true.
Jace’s Resources
The paired sheet represents the doppelgängers, and the cards of the Hexhaven students represent the military school. That leaves a way to express Jace’s illusion army. The main way we are capturing it is with a new mechanic called empower Jace. Keeping with the what-if theme of the set, empower Jace takes the amass mechanic and tweaks it. Instead of creating an Army creature token, it creates a Jace planeswalker token. That token has the following loyalty abilities: “-1: Surveil 1” and “-3: Draw a card.” Set Design can play around with tweaking those abilities, but so far, they have played well.
The fact that this is exactly what Jeremy Geist proposed in exploratory design (with scry being swapped for surveil) is still shocking to me. It’s not often we get all the numbers right on the first try.
Empower Jace is a keyword action and, as such, can be used on any card type. The ability is primarily in white, blue, and green, but appears in all five colors. This includes an uncommon cycle that grants an extra ability to the token. The current version of the mechanic adds loyalty counters to any Jace planeswalker, not just the planeswalker token, but this is a switch that the Set Design or Play Design team could turn off if needed.
It was a switch that Set Design did turn off, probably with input from Play Design. The philosophy during vision design is that we would rather do the bolder version and indicate it in the handoff with a note that it could change. It’s always easier for Set Design to pull something back than push it further, so I like when we’re more aggressive during the vision design process.
Jace’s Cancellation
1UU
Instant
Counter target spell. Empower Jace 1. (Put that many loyalty counters on a Jace planeswalker you control. If you don’t control one, first create a blue Jace planeswalker token named Jace Echo with 0 loyalty, “-1: Surveil 1” and “-3: Draw a card.”)
Jace’s Scorpion
1G
Creature — Illusion Scorpion
1/1
Deathtouch
When CARDNAME enters, empower Jace 2. (Put that many loyalty counters on a Jace planeswalker you control. If you don’t control one, first create a blue Jace planeswalker token named Jace Echo with 0 loyalty, “-1: Surveil 1” and “-3: Draw a card.”)
Jace’s Medic
4W
Creature — Illusion Cleric
4/3
When CARDNAME enters, empower Jace 2. (Put that many loyalty counters on a Jace planeswalker you control. If you don’t control one, first create a blue Jace planeswalker token named Jace Echo with 0 loyalty, “-1: Surveil 1” and “-3: Draw a card.”)
Jace planeswalkers you control have “-1: Target creature you control gains lifelink until end of turn.”
The last thing we tried to capture the flavor of an illusion army involved making a cycle of common “relentless” creatures. These are creatures that you can include any number of in a deck and mechanically care about how many you have. The cycle was pulled just before handoff but could be re-added if needed. This text isn’t ready for you to see yet, but read on for more from behind the scenes of Reality Fracture.
This last sentence is about a future set, so I’ve redacted it. Stay tuned!
Relentless Dogs
2W
Creature — Illusion Dog
2/2
When CARDNAME enters, put a number of +1/+1 counters on up to one target non-Dog permanent equal to the number of creatures you control named Relentless Dogs.
A deck may have any number of permanents named CARDNAME.
Relentless Reptiles
1R
Creature — Illusion Lizard
2/1
2R: Creatures you control named CARDNAME get +2/+0 and gain haste until end of turn.
A deck may have any number of cards named CARDNAME.
Relentless Roots
1G
Creature — Illusion Plant
0/3
Defender
T: Add X mana of any one color, where X is the number of creatures you control named CARDNAME.
A deck may have any number of cards named CARDNAME.
The Heroes
The paired sheets will represent our heroes, but we wanted a mechanic and at least one archetype to represent our heroes attacking to save the day. The mechanic we chose is called make history, and it’s sort of a combination of landfall and raid. Make history is an ability word with the following text:
Make history — If a legendary creature or planeswalker you control entered or attacked this turn …
The ability currently shows up in all colors but is concentrated in white, red, and green. It can appear on any card type and is flavored as a spell of one of the heroes.
Quintorius’s Spirit Grasp
3W
Enchantment
Make history — This spell costs 2 less to cast if a legendary creature or planeswalker you control entered or attacked this turn.
When this enchantment enters, exile target creature an opponent controls until this enchantment leaves the battlefield.
Ral’s Reckless Experiment
1R
Sorcery
Exile the top two cards of your library. You may play them this turn.
Make history — If a legendary creature or planeswalker you control entered or attacked this turn, create a Treasure token.
Dina’s Energizing Brew
2G
Sorcery
Make history — Choose one. If a legendary creature or planeswalker entered or attacked under your control this turn, you may instead choose both –
• Destroy target artifact or enchantment.
• Create a 2/2 colorless Cadet creature token.
The Rest of the Multiverse
Per feedback from March of the Machine, we made a conscious decision to reign in the story. While Jace has made a brand-new multiverse, the majority of the set occurs on one plane, the alternate Arcavios. We do want to give the audience a small peek at the other worlds to see how else Jace has changed things and to allow for a little what-if fun from other worlds. There are two ways the file currently shows off the other worlds.
First, many alternate versions of the legendary creatures on the paired sheet will be characters from “Multiverse J.” As almost of them are from specific worlds, this will give us a chance to give players a small peek. Second, we have a number of Sagas that tell the story of the alternative multiverse. These Sagas make use of a variant we are calling turning point. Here’s how it works. Each Saga has one chapter (which chapter can vary) that has two different options. When you reach that chapter, you choose which version of the chapter happens. The Sagas are roughly a cycle, but the file currently has an extra green one.
We ended up showing other worlds mostly through the echoed pairs.
History of Innistrad
4B
Enchantment — Saga
Turning point (Choose IA or IB.)
IA — Vampiric Aristocracy — Return target creature card from your graveyard to the battlefield. It’s a Vampire in addition to its other types.
IB — Lycanthropic Dominion — Each opponent sacrifices a creature, then loses life equal to the greatest power among creatures they control.
II. III. Target player mills two cards.
History of Tarkir
4RR
Enchantment — Saga
I. II. CARDNAME deals 2 damage to any target.
Turning point (Choose IIIA or IIIB.)
IIIA. Fate Reforged — Create a 4/4 red Dragon creature token with flying and haste.
IIIB. Khans Remain — Choose three colors. Add two mana of each of those colors.
History of Eldraine
1G
Enchantment — Saga
I. II. Create a Food token. (It’s an artifact with “{2}, {T}, Sacrifice this artifact: You gain 3 life.”)
Turning point
IIIA. Founding of the Realm — Whenever you gain life this turn, put a +1/+1 counter on up to one target creature you control.
IIIB. The Gingerbread Empire — Target Food you control becomes a 4/4 Golem creature with haste in addition to its other types.
The Sagas mostly fell victim to the same thing as “make history.” The set needed a little less stuff in it, and the things that remained needed to be simpler. The “turning point” Sagas are cool, and I hope to find a good place to use them one day. The other strike against them was they weren’t quite telling a singular story. They were blending two different stories, how each plane worked out in each multiverse, and it didn’t quite ring true with the top-down quality we like for our Sagas.
I had a lot to say in this document, so we’re not quite done yet. I want to know what you think about today’s article, Reality Fracture, or any of the pieces of the set I talked about today. You can contact me through email or social media (Bluesky, Tumblr, Instagram, TikTok, and Twitter).
Join me next week for part three.
Until then, may you imagine what your favorite plane looks like in the Echoverse.

Karen Read Series Starring Elizabeth Banks Ordered at Amazon

True crime fans, this is the best news you’ll (Karen) Read all day.
Amazon Prime Video has officially ordered the scripted Karen Read series starring and executive produced by Elizabeth Banks (Cocaine Bear, Pitch Perfect). The currently untitled eight-episode (each episode is one hour) drama series inspired by the Law&Crime and Audible Original podcast Karen will be written, showrun and executive produced by Justin Noble (The Sex Lives Of College Girls, Brooklyn Nine-Nine). Banks will play Read.
The series hails from Warner Bros. Television; Brownstone Productions, David E. Kelley Productions (Margo’s Got Money Troubles, Big Little Lies), Audible and Law&Crime will serve as executive producers. In 2025, when Amazon announced it was developing the series, Read had a strong reaction.
“I have nothing to do with that; it’s not authorized by me in any way,” Read said during an interview with WRKO host Howie Carr. Her attorney Alan Jackson said that Read’s story is “Karen Read’s story to tell.”
Karen Read wants to tell her story through LBI Entertainment (Hell or High Water) — and a book deal.
Here’s the short version of Read’s story: “When a Boston police officer is found dead in the snow during a blizzard, all eyes are on his girlfriend, Karen Read. But when she and her legal team claim she’s not only innocent, but that she’s the victim of a conspiracy protecting the real assailants, the story spreads like wildfire, dividing a community in ways they’ve never seen,” the Amazon series’ synopsis reads. “As endless suspicion mounts, in multiple directions, this genre-bending true crime series explores society’s explosive obsession with true crime.”
“I grew up in Massachusetts, and like so many people there, we watched this case divide families, friends, and entire towns,” Banks said in a statement. “We have spent years with this material because the questions it raises go far beyond one courtroom: why we choose the stories we believe, and what happens when trust in our institutions breaks down. Justin has written a series that respects and treats with care the complexity of what happened and the public reaction to it. We are grateful to Prime Video, Warner Bros. Television and our partners at David E. Kelley Productions, Wondery and Law&Crime for believing in it from the start.”
“This case has more twists and turns than any story I’ve ever consumed, real or fictional,” said Noble. “It makes M. Night Shyamalan look like Nora Ephron. But the reason this story resonates and must be told is because of the profound takeaways it leaves us with: about a deeply imperfect justice system that urgently needs change, about the mistreatment of women by those who weaponize and abuse their power, and about a victim who deserves to be remembered.”
In addition to Banks and Noble, the series is executive produced by Max Handelman, Krissy Wall, David E. Kelley, Matthew Tinker, Aaron Hart, Marshall Lewy, Jeni Mulein, Jen Sargent, Rachel Stockman and Dan Abrams. The project came to Audible via its integration with Wondery; Hart shepherded the project.
“At its core, this series is about more than a single case — it’s about what happens when truth becomes a matter of perspective and an entire community is forced to confront its own deepest divisions,” said Peter Friedlander, head of global television, Amazon MGM Studios. “With Justin Noble’s sharp, nuanced storytelling, Elizabeth Banks’ captivating presence, and the powerhouse creative team behind this project, we believe this will be a defining series that sparks conversation around the world.”
Marshall Lewy, head of Audible content, North America, commented: “The Karen Read case gripped the country because it tapped into questions about truth, loyalty, and who we choose to believe. Karen, the Law&Crime podcast and an Audible Original, set the standard for telling this story and is exactly the kind of IP that translates powerfully to television. We’re thrilled to work with this incredibly talented team.”

Cardi B Cancels BZR WKND Jamaica 2026 Headlining Performance

Cardi B is no longer performing at BZR WKND Jamaica this month, her rep told Billboard on Thursday (Oct. 8).
The “AH HA” rapper was slated to hit the stage Oct. 18 and deliver the headlining set for BZR WKND Jamaica, a four-day festival celebrating music, culture, food, tourism, fashion and entertainment. Bardi would have taken over Kingston’s National Stadium, the same venue Vybz Kartel sold out for his post-incarceration comeback concert on New Year’s Eve 2024.
“Cardi B will not be performing at BZR WKND Jamaica on October 18, 2026,” reads a statement from Cardi’s reps to Billboard. “Cardi appreciates the love and support from her fans in Jamaica and hopes to see them in the future. For information regarding the status of BZR WKND Jamaica, ticketing, or other event-related matters, please contact the event organizers directly. Any information regarding Cardi B and her future performances will be communicated exclusively through Cardi B’s official channels.”
At press time, event organizers have not returned Billboard’s request for comment.
Last week (Sept. 28), Billboard exclusively revealed that Grammy-nominated dancehall superstar Spice would host this year’s BZR WKND Jamaica, with additional performers including Grammy-nominated R&B star Keyshia Cole and dancehall artists Malie Donn, Ding Dong, Stalk Ashley, Shaneil Muir and DJ MAC.
Cardi’s BZR WKND appearance would have followed this year’s wildly successful Little Miss Drama Tour, which grossed more than $70 million and sold 453,000 tickets across Feb. 11-April 18, according to Billboard Boxscore. The “ErrTime” rapper launched her North American trek — her first proper string of live shows in seven years — in support of her 2025 Am I the Drama? LP, which debuted atop the Billboard 200 and spawned Billboard Hot 100 top 40 hits like “Outside” (No. 10), the Kehlani-assisted “Ring” (No. 28) and “Magnet” (No. 37).

Jennifer Coolidge Returns For Season 2 Of ‘The Watcher’

The real estate agent who sold Naomi Watts’ Nora Brannock and Bobby Cannavale’s Dean Brannock their nightmare home is returning for season two of The Watcher.
Jennifer Coolidge, who played the ambitious and brassy realtor who donned pastel-colored power suits, is back for the second season.
It comes after Netflix revealed that the second season of the series, from Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan, is going into production, nearly four years after being renewed. Production begins this fall in New York.
Coolidge joins Watts, Cannavale, Margo Martindale, who played nosy neighbor Mo, and Isabel Gravitt, who played the married couple’s daughter Ellie Brannock, in returning.
The series followed the Brannock family who moved into what was supposed to be their suburban dream home, and quickly became a living hell. Ominous letters from someone calling themself “The Watcher” were just the beginning as the neighborhood’s sinister secrets came spilling out.
The season ended with the Brannocks moving out of the house to a New York apartment but Dean and Nora found themselves pulled back to the house.
Created by Murphy and Brennan, the latter serves as showrunner and the pair exec produce alongside Crystle Roberson Dorsey, who also directs, Nissa Diederich, Karl Frankenfield, Scott Robertson, Todd Kubrak, Tanase Popa, Naomi Watts, Henry Joost & Ariel Schulman, Eric Newman & Bryan Unkeless, and Max Winkler.
The White Lotus star Coolidge recently starred in A Minecraft Movie and is starring in the sequel, A Minecraft Movie Squared as well as Rebel Wilson-directed feature Girl Group.

Diversity Now Seen as “Optional”

When #Emmyssowhite began trending after white actors swept the lead and supporting acting categories during the Sept. 14 ceremony, it unearthed a reality deeper than the demand for equal acclaim: Actors of color can’t win accolades for roles that don’t exist.
“The Emmys ultimately reflect the work that makes it to our screens, and this year’s results are another reminder that progress is not linear,” Television Academy chair Cris Abrego says in a statement to The Hollywood Reporter. “We have seen meaningful gains in representation across our industry, but we have also seen real regression, and we cannot take progress for granted.”
UCLA documented the backsliding in its Hollywood Diversity Report, released in June, which noted, for the first time in three years, the proportion of lead actors of color on streaming fell below their proportion of the U.S. population, from a high of 51 percent in 2024 to 36 percent in 2025. Streaming films featuring casts with a majority of people of color slipped from 41 percent to 25.8 percent.
“It’s always two steps forward, one step back, but this time it feels like two steps back,” says Gloria Calderón Kellett, creator of the Prime Video series With Love. “It feels like four steps back, if I’m honest.”
When Black Lives Matter protests erupted across America in 2020, Hollywood positioned itself as an ally, and for a short while it appeared the industry had done more than offer lip service regarding its commitment to representing marginalized communities.
Netflix tweeted, “To be silent is to be complicit. Black lives matter. We have a platform, and we have a duty to our Black members, employees, creators and talent to speak up.” Bob Iger wrote in a letter to Disney employees published on the Walt Disney Company website, “While we don’t have all the answers, we resolve to use our compassion, our creative ideas and our collective sense of humanity to ensure we are fostering a culture that acknowledges our people’s feelings and their pain. We also realize that now more than ever is the time for us all to further strengthen our commitment to diversity and inclusion everywhere.”
The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences took what, arguably, seemed to be the most meaningful step, instituting diversity and inclusion requirements for best picture nominees — more on that come winter when we, inevitably, find ourselves in another #Oscarssowhite race, given the limited frontrunners of color in the earliest nominee predictions.
UCLA’s 2022 Hollywood Diversity Report showed the share of digital scripted series created by people of color increased from 14.7 percent in the 2019-20 season to 25.6 percent in 2020-21 — the largest year-to-year gain seen in the report’s nine-year history. Yet as the writers and actors strikes of 2023 brought an industry still reeling from the financial losses of the pandemic to a halt, a familiar trend emerged. UCLA’s Streaming Television in 2023 report found of the 228 scripted shows analyzed, only 25 (11 percent) had a BIPOC creator. One year later, that portion nominally increased to 12.2 percent.
“It oftentimes happens that diversity, in terms of race or ethnicity, is seen as something that’s optional or something that’s not essential when the research that we’ve done really has shown that it should be woven into all the decisions made because of the fact that audiences are more and more racially and ethnically diverse, and so they are also very much interested in seeing that reflected on screen,” says Ana-Christina Ramón, director of the Entertainment and Media Research Initiative at UCLA and co-author of the Hollywood Diversity reports.
That outlook is how the Emmys went from a year of no winners of color in 2021 to a historic number in 2023 (five out of 12, tying the record set 32 years earlier) and back down to zero in 2026, says Ben Watkins, creator of Prime Video’s Cross and the upcoming Muhammad Ali drama The Greatest. “It’s important for us to acknowledge and say out loud that this isn’t an anomaly, it is a pattern … this is a reflection of a foundational issue.”
According to UCLA’s Ramón, that issue is two-fold. “It is part of a systemic bias that I think exists,” she says comparing the decline in racial parity to the underrepresentation of women in total streaming film actors, writers and directors seen across streaming in the past year, despite women making up the largest demographic of viewers. “There’s this all-across issue of relying on an old mindset and going back to a culture where it’s just this boys club,” she says. (UCLA’s 2020 report found that 92% of the chairs or CEOs of 11 major studios were white; 68% were men.) “A lot of people think, ‘oh, that’s probably long gone because of the advances that have been made,’ but there are stories about this resurgence of being able to be openly misogynistic, openly racist, from what I’ve heard from people behind the scenes.
The day he was sworn into his second term as president on Jan. 20, 2025, Donald Trump issued an executive order that terminated all diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility offices and programs within federal agencies. Shortly after Trump’s mandate, Disney, in its filing to regulators, removed all references to its Reimagine Tomorrow initiative, launched in 2021 to amplify underrepresented voices; Amazon Studios eliminated policies aimed at increasing diversity in its TV shows and films; Paramount abolished staffing goals tied to race, ethnicity and gender and Warner Bros. Discovery announced that it was dropping the “D” and “E” in its recruitment efforts to now solely focus on inclusion.
“The rollback of DEI exposed how performative the effort always was, as if our opportunity to create was a result of a box being checked,” says Deli Boys creator Abdullah Saeed.
More perplexing is the industry’s retreat despite evidence that diversity is in its economic interest. The Latino Donor Collaborative’s 2024 Latinos in Media Report found that the industry could generate an additional $12 billion to $18 billion a year if it were to achieve proper Latin representation in TV and film.
A study released in January by USC’s Norman Lear Center Latino representation initiative ¡Pa’lante!, found Latinos accounted for only 6 percent of credited characters in the top broadcast series for the 2024-2025 TV season, despite making up 20 percent of the U.S. population. UCLA’s 2026 Hollywood Diversity Report also found streaming films with casts that were 21 percent-30 percent BIPOC had the second-highest median rating across all household and viewer groups and that in 2025, six of the top 10 streaming films and ten of the top 20 streaming films by total household ratings featured casts that were more than 30 percent BIPOC.
It also can’t be overlooked that HBO’s The Pitt, with its notably multi-ethnic cast, led all Emmy nominations this year, with 25, and won best drama for the second year in a row, and Abbott Elementary, the most diverse network Emmy contender, remains one of ABC’s most-watched comedies as it approaches its 100th-episode milestone in its sixth season this fall.
“I feel a fear that I did not feel before,” admits With Love creator Calderón Kellet. “I came into Hollywood and UPN had started and there were more shows that centered stories about people of color, comedies and dramas, and it felt like a very hopeful time. And then certainly when I had One Day at a Time, for a minute there, it was incredible. There was Gentefied and Vida, and we really were seeing this onslaught of all of these Latine-led shows, which was so exciting. And then the graveyard of those shows slowly started filling up.”
After doing some digging, Calderón Kellett found a common denominator. “Our budgets were not the same,” she says, qualifying the latest UCLA data that found fewer than one-fifth of streaming films directed by BIPOC filmmakers had a budget of more than $50 million, compared with slightly more than one-quarter of those directed by white men. “It’s like, oh, there are opportunities and that’s great, but we’re still starting the marathon five miles behind. It’s very difficult to win the race when you’re starting at such a disadvantage.”
When Saeed began shopping his Hulu crime drama centered on two Pakistani American brothers (Asif Ali and Saagar Shaikh), he says, “Deli Boys was passed on by everybody except for Onyx Collective,” Disney’s content brand for creators of color and underrepresented voices launched in 2021. “While I’m very grateful for there being a platform specifically for us, I wish we didn’t live in a world where we needed that separate water fountain and that we just have access to the actual spaces,” he says.
The series, which premiered in March of 2025 aired for two seasons and submitted for 28 Emmy nominations across 22 categories this year — though it ultimately didn’t land any noms — before being canceled in August.
“The saddest thing about Deli Boys’ cancellation is that it eliminates at-bats for Brown creatives in every position, and the decision to end it was not made by Brown people,” says Saeed, who notes he was told viewership was the basis for the decision, though he also noticed a shift in attitude toward his post.
Calderón Kellett has felt that shift, too. “These are the same problems that were here in the ’90s; the difference is I did not feel the fear factor of this moment where suddenly by virtue of being Latina, my identity is political.”
The Paramount Warner Bros. merger harkens another reality of the ‘90s, considered the golden age of Black television before CBS and Warner Bros. Entertainment merged UPN and The WB to form The CW, dropping many of the predominately Black shows that aired on UPN with its founding. Earlier this year, Paramount phased out BET’s streaming platform BET+ and merged its content onto the Paramount+ app after buying out Tyler Perry Studios’ equity stake. The cable channel could also face divestiture if Paramount violates key terms of its settlement during the Warner Bros. Discovery acquisition.
Bleak realities aside, creators of color remain focused on the bigger issues #Emmyssowhite brought into view and hopeful of a tide that will once again turn in their favor. “Times like this is when actually we got to get to work,” says Kellet. “This is when we have to reflect society. This is when we do have to tell the stories of what’s happening in our communities. This is when we should be challenging things that are keeping us down or atrocities that we’re seeing. I want to find a way to continue to do that and also support the next generation to do that. Everything is storytelling: the stories we tell ourselves, the stories we tell each other, the stories that politicians tell us, we need to become masters of it so that we can use it for good.”
With his upcoming Muhammad Ali sports drama, The Greatest, launching Nov. 4, Watkins is hopeful more studios will pay greater attention to internal metrics than fluctuating external political attitudes when making content decisions. “[Prime Video] having confidence in me as a storyteller, combined with the success of Cross, made their decision on The Greatest, I think, easier. And I’ve seen that in other pockets too,” he says.
Adds Saeed, “We are inevitable. Just by nature of diffusion, we are going to end up in the positions of power. We are going to end up with the microphone, with the platform. Resistance to diversity and storytelling is a fool’s errand because storytelling is an uncontrollable river of energy, and you can’t constrain that.
