C Joseph Vijay, the chief minister of Tamil Nadu, ordered on Monday the revamping and modernisation Amma Unavagams in the state. Currently, 383 Amma Unavagams operate under the Greater Chennai Corporation while another 237 Amma Unavagams in the state are operated by other corporations or municipalities. The chief minister met with senior government officials and instructed them to upgrade the infrastructure at the canteens. He also ordered that the necessary cooking equipment be purchased immediately and to ensure that the public is provided with hygienic, quality food. The chief minister ordered the expenses for renovations and equipment purchases to be paid from the general funds of corporations, municipalities and other public entities.
