Nearly 880 Indian nationals, including students who had been stranded in Iran due to the conflict in West Asia, have started to return to India through Armenia and Azerbaijan, the Ministry of External Affairs said on Thursday.. Jaiswal said the number of calls or emails has reduced significantly. The issues of people getting stranded have been largely addressed, and calls and emails have gone down significantly, and helplines in the Indian embassies in various countries in the region are working 24×7, he added..  India has received a request from Ukraine for consular access to six Ukrainian nationals arrested by law enforcement on charges of illegally entering Mizoram and training ethnic armed groups in Myanmar, and the issue will be addressed in line with legal requirements, the external affairs ministry said on Thursday.. Six foreigners, accused of illegally entering Mizoram, then Myanmar, to contact and train ethnic war groups associated with Indian insurgent groups, at the Patiala House Court (ANI Video Grab). The Ukrainian nationals and a US citizen were arrested at airports in Delhi, Lucknow and Kolkata as part of a National Investigation Agency (NIA) operation on March 13. A Delhi court has remanded them in NIA custody till March 27.. “This is a legal matter, the relevant [government] agencies are investigating it presently,” external affairs ministry spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal told a weekly media briefing in response to several questions regarding the arrest of the Ukrainian nationals.. While acknowledging that the Indian side has received Ukraine’s request for consular access to the arrested individuals, Jaiswal said this will be “addressed keeping in mind the legal requirements that are involved in this particular case”. He did not provide details.. Ukraine on Thursday expressed “serious concern” about the “possible orchestrated and politically motivated nature” of the case against the Ukrainian nationals following reports that Russian authorities had shared information on the matter with their Indian counterparts.. The Ukrainian embassy rejected any insinuations regarding the “possible involvement of the Ukrainian State in supporting terrorist activities” and said Kyiv is ready to actively cooperate with New Delhi on the case on the basis of the bilateral Treaty on Mutual Legal Assistance in Criminal Matters.. Jaiswal was also asked about a meeting on Wednesday between National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and US ambassador Sergio Gor and replied that this was part of normal conversations between the two sides. He said Doval and Gor discussed issues of bilateral importance but did not give details.. According to NIA’s submission in court, the seven arrested individuals allegedly entered India on tourist visas, flew to Guwahati and then travelled to Mizoram without the requisite documents such as the Restricted Area Permit (RAP). They allegedly “entered Myanmar illegally and they were to conduct a pre-scheduled training for Myanmar-based ethnic armed groups” in drone warfare, NIA said.

 The Chhattisgarh assembly on Thursday passed a bill aimed at preventing religious conversions carried out through force, inducement, fraud or misrepresentation, with stringent provisions including life imprisonment in cases of “mass conversion”.. The Chhattisgarh Dharm Swatantraya Vidheyak 2026 (Freedom of Religion Bill 2026), tabled in the House by Deputy Chief Minister Vijay Sharma, was passed following five hours of discussion amid a boycott by Congress legislators after their demand to refer the bill to a Select Committee for consultation before its introduction was rejected by the chair.. During the discussion on the bill, Sharma, who also holds Home portfolio, accused the Congress of indulging in vote bank politics.. Citing alleged religious conversion incidents in Narayanpur and Kanker districts in Bastar, Sharma said the Bill was introduced keeping in view the current scenario, adding the government does not intend to restrict voluntary conversions.. “Any person can choose to convert by their own will. How can we stop that? The issue is whether conversions are taking place through inducement, force, or misrepresentation,” he said.. The Bill seeks to replace Chhattisgarh Dharm Swatantraya Adhiniyam (Freedom of Religion Act) 1968 adopted from Madhya Pradesh when the state was carved out in 2000.. Referring to the 1968 law, Sharma said it was enacted during Congress rule (in erstwhile Madhya Pradesh).. “This (new bill) is an extension and strengthening of the same law. Nearly 60 years have passed and circumstances have changed. It is surprising that the opposition is walking out on a law that they themselves enacted,” he said while accusing the Congress of ignoring the potential impact of religious conversions on the state’s culture.. All offences will be cognisable and non-bailable. The Bill, however, states that reconversion to one’s ancestral religion will not be treated as conversion under the law.. Given Chhattisgarh’s geographical location, socio-economic conditions, the passage of time, and advancements in technology and communication within society, the provisions of the existing Freedom of Religion Act have become inadequate, the Bill said.. The new Bill aims to prohibit religious conversions carried out through force, coercion, undue influence, allurement, misrepresentation, fraudulent means, or marriage, including through digital platforms such as social media and electronic communication.. It defines “allurement” as monetary benefits, gifts, employment, free education or medical facilities, promises of better lifestyle, or marriage, while “coercion” includes psychological pressure, physical force or threats, including social boycott.. “Mass conversion” has been defined as conversion of two or more persons in a single event..
