54 years, 48 leagues, 2,000 grounds – the ultimate football odyssey

ByDaniel Austin. BBC Sport senior journalist. Standing pitchside at a muddy Lancastrian playing field is a football fan excitedly applying the finishing touches to an enormous, time-worn scrapbook.. The notes he is making mark the culmination of a five-decade-long odyssey.. When a 17-year-old Tony Incenzo visited the last of the 92 grounds in the Football League in 1981, he became the youngest person to complete a sporting pilgrimage that hardcore fans across the country can take a lifetime to accomplish.. But rather than stopping there and choosing just to follow his beloved Queens Park Rangers, Tony set himself a new goal – to visit every single ground in the English non-league system, spanning hundreds upon hundreds of clubs in every corner of the country.. And when Fulwood Amateurs kicked off at home against Thornton Cleveleys in the North West Counties First Division North on Easter Monday, 54 years after his first non-league match, Tony’s epic quest was complete.. Stamps and signatures from every home club Tony has visited line the pages of his precious scrapbook, a behemoth record of the ultimate football groundhopping adventure.. Fulwood’s entry now sits on its own fresh page, his teenage dream finally realised.. “It’s just overwhelming emotion”, Tony says, following a guard of honour given to him by both sets of players.. “To finally do it, on a glorious sunny day, with a lovely green pitch, is a great relief.”. The non-league system comprises steps five to 10 of English football and all leagues bar the top division – the National League – are regional.. The system has undergone multiple revamps since Tony began his adventure but is now made up of 996 clubs spread across 48 divisions.. Some of those clubs are fully professional and draw home crowds of thousands, but many are amateurs playing in municipal parks with no stands and crowds made up mostly of family members and passing dog walkers.. Adding in clubs who have since dropped out of the system, or dissolved entirely, Tony has watched football at over 2,000 non-league grounds.. “I get as much enjoyment from going to humble non-league clubs as I do big showpiece games,” Tony, now 62, says.. “You can turn up at a non-league game 10 minutes before kick-off, park outside, pay your admission, stroll around the ground, stand wherever you want, buy food and drink – and probably have change from about £15.. “I’ve been to places that I would never ever visit if it wasn’t for football – lovely little villages in Devon, remote seaside spots up in the North East and so on.. “It’s just great fun to travel all around the country and meet the people – people are what make a football trip special.”. [embedded content]. It is not just non-league football that Tony has a passion for – he has also watched matches at all 92 stadiums in the top five tiers of English football, at all 42 in Scotland’s four professional divisions and at many others across Europe and around the world.. And, if that wasn’t

ICE arrests illegal immigrant accused of kidnapping 4-year-old girl from laundromat

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!. U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) detained an illegal immigrant who was released back into the community after allegedly kidnapping a 4-year-old girl from a laundromat in New York, a report said.. The Department of Homeland Security told the New York Post that Carlos Corte-Corte, 38, of Ecuador, was taken into custody by ICE on March 31 and placed into removal proceedings following the March 28 incident at Laundry Kingdom in Patchogue.. “This three-time deported criminal illegal alien, Carlos Corte-Corte, kidnapped an innocent four-year-old girl from a laundromat on Long Island. New York sanctuary politicians chose to release this kidnapper from jail to prey on more innocent children rather than cooperate with ICE law enforcement,” Acting Assistant Secretary Lauren Bis told the newspaper.. “Sanctuary politicians must stop putting politics above public safety,” she reportedly added. “This type of insanity leads to more crimes and more innocent victims.”. ICE IMPERSONATOR BRUTALLY BEATEN BY STREET MOB, DHS SAYS MAN NOT ASSOCIATED WITH AGENCY. The Suffolk County Police Department said that, “While a woman was with her two children at a laundromat, located at 138 East Main St., Carlos-Corte, who was unknown to the woman, led her 4-year-old daughter out the back exit of the laundromat, at 12:08 p.m.” on March 28.. “Her mother reported her missing, and patrol officers responded to the scene, where they reviewed surveillance video and began canvassing the area. During the search, the mother located her daughter in the children’s play area of the Patchogue-Medford Library, located at 54-60 East Main St. A patrol officer then located Corte near the laundromat and took him into custody,” police added.. Corte-Corte was charged with second-degree kidnapping and endangering the welfare of a child, police said.. DHS SLAMS ‘INSANE’ 5-YEAR PLEA DEAL FOR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS WHO ADMITTED FATAL STABBING IN VIRGINIA. The day after his arrest, a Suffolk County district judge freed Corte-Corte on supervised release with a GPS monitor, the New York Post reported.. The newspaper said Suffolk County District Attorney Ray Tierney disagreed with the judge’s decision and added that, “I think if you look at the facts of the case, clearly they’re concerning.”. “He thought the girl lived alone without parents,” the New York Post quoted Corte-Corte’s public defender as saying in court. “He took her to the library and told an employee there as such, but there was a language barrier. It seems to be a mistake.”. CLICK HERE TO GET THE FOX NEWS APP. Fox News Digital has reached out to the Department of Homeland Security for further comment.

Minnesota deny ex-Everton forward Rodriguez has muscle-wasting condition

Image source, Getty Images. ByElizabeth Botcherby. BBC Sport journalist. 35 minutes ago. Minnesota United have denied rumours that midfielder James Rodriguez is suffering from a potentially life-threatening muscle-wasting condition.. The Colombia international returned to the club’s training ground on Monday after being hospitalised.. Rodriguez, 34, showed signs of illness during Colombia’s 3-1 defeat by France on 29 March and subsequently spent three days in hospital with severe dehydration.. A statement from the Colombia Football Federation on 2 April confirmed Rodriguez was under observation for a “non-sports-related medical condition” but said his prognosis was “favourable”.. Social media rumours and reports in some US media sparked concerns he was suffering from rhabdomyolysis – a rare condition sometimes linked to over-exertion which causes muscles to disintegrate and can lead to potentially fatal kidney damage when toxic muscle fibres enter the circulatory system.. However, Major League Soccer (MLS) side Minnesota United said:, external “The club and our medical professionals can unequivocally state there has been no clinical or laboratory evidence of rhabdomyolysis.”. Rodriguez, who won two Champions Leagues with Real Madrid and also played for Premier League side Everton, participated in a “supervised return-to-activity session” on Monday. His return to full training will be guided by the club’s medical staff.. Rodriguez has made two MLS appearances since joining Minnesota United in February.. Related topics. Major League Soccer.
