NYC judge seeks to make example of officer who threw cooler at fleeing suspect, causing fatal crash

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! A former New York City police officer, convicted of manslaughter in the August 2023 death of 30-year-old Eric Duprey, was sentenced Thursday to three to nine years in prison for throwing a picnic cooler filled with ice and drinks at the fleeing suspect. Critics argue the ruling could deter officers from making split-second decisions in critical situations. Erik Duran, 38, received the sentence from a judge. Duran insisted he was attempting to shield fellow officers from Duprey, who was riding a motorized scooter at the time of his fatal crash. The ex-NYPD officer is the first to receive a prison sentence for an on-duty death in at least 20 years. “I took this job to save lives.” “I felt awful after witnessing Eric Duprey’s crash,” Duran said to Bronx Judge Guy Mitchell. NYPD OFFICER JONATHAN DILLER’S WIDOW BREAKS DOWN IN TEARS AS CROWD OF POLICE PACKS COURTROOM FOR SUSPECTED COP KILLER’S HOMICIDE TRIAL. The judge argued that Thursday’s sentence would deter other officers from acting recklessly. He dismissed Duran’s claim that his actions were justified, ruling that the former officer hurled the cooler out of anger over Duprey’s escape. “They had enough to investigate and apprehend him another day,” Mitchell remarked about the police. The difference is that the family will never see the deceased again. Duran chose to have Mitchell, rather than a jury, decide the case.

Alleged Charlie Kirk assassin Tyler Robinson’s fingerprints, palm print found near rooftop: report

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! Freshly unsealed search warrants in the case against Tyler Robinson, the Utah resident charged with assassinating conservative figure Charlie Kirk in September, have disclosed additional information on how investigators gathered DNA and cellphone records that position him at the shooting site. Authorities secured DNA from “fingerprints and a smeared palm print near the northeast corner rooftop edge of the Losee Center building, where Robinson descended from the roof to the ground below,” as well as cellphone data indicating his whereabouts on Sept. According to East Idaho News, the incident occurred on 10/2025. A Google Maps route discovered on Robinson’s phone reportedly led to an area near Utah Valley University’s campus, as the outlet noted. TYLER ROBINSON: PROSECUTORS ARGUE CHARLIE KIRK SHOOTING TEXTS REFLECT CONFUSION, NOT BIAS, TO COUNTER CONFLICT ALLEGATION. The warrants also contained a note that Robinson allegedly left for his roommate—whom he was romantically involved with—shortly before the alleged assassination. Robinson called his partner, Lance Twiggs, “Luna.” “Luna, if you’re reading this as per my text, then I’m so sorry,” the note reportedly read. This morning, I left the house on a mission and set up an auto-text: “GOT A TIP?” “I’m probably dead or staring down a long prison term.”

Realtor’s cold case murder suspect accused of fleeing scene, skipping 911 call in new witness account: report

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! Court documents newly released indicate that a witness saw the woman arrested in the 2011 cold case killing of an Iowa real estate agent behaving “in an erratic manner” right after hearing gunshots. Kristin Ramsey, 53, faces first-degree murder charges in the April 8, 2011, death of Ashley Okland. She was arrested last month, the most recent update in the 15-year-old cold case. Okland was shot twice at close range—once in the chest and once in the face—while hosting an open house for a model townhome owned by Rottlund Homes, the same company where Ramsey worked at the time of the alleged murder. REALTOR’S COLD CASE MURDER SOLVED AFTER 15 YEARS, POLICE ANNOUNCE. In a recent court filing, a next-door neighbor witness stated she heard two loud bangs before spotting Ramsey at the townhome’s front door, per KCCI. The witness also informed authorities that, upon glancing out her second-floor window, she observed Ramsey pacing beside her car and talking on her phone. The filing notes that Ramsey phoned a coworker at Rottlund Homes right after the alleged shooting but skipped calling 911, the outlet reported. FOLLOW THE FOX TRUE CRIME TEAM ON X. Soon afterward, the witness saw Ramsey “back up at a high rate of speed in an erratic manner and leave the area,” according to court documents cited by KCCI. SIGN UP TO GET TRUE CRIME NEWSLETTER. Authorities also stated that the witness—not Ramsey—called 911 to report the shooting. SEND US A TIP HERE. Prosecutors have disclosed that Ramsey provided inconsistent accounts of her location on the day of the alleged murder during various interviews since the probe started, per KCCI. Court documents indicate that on May 3, 2011, after serving a search warrant, officials found multiple guns, illicit drugs, and aggressive posters in Ramsey’s residence, the news source added. LISTEN TO THE NEW ‘CRIME & JUSTICE WITH DONNA ROTUNNO’ PODCAST. Similar items were allegedly discovered during a second search warrant at Ramsey’s home, conducted just before her arrest this spring.
