Cardoso takes record nine wickets in T20 international

Image source, Cricket Brasil. ByMike Peter, BBC Sport journalist and Timothy Abraham, BBC Sport Journalist. 9 April 2026. Brazil’s Laura Cardoso has become the first player ever to take nine wickets in a T20 international, recording figures of 9-4 against Lesotho.. The seamer achieved the feat in three overs as Lesotho were bowled out for 13 in 6.2 overs, chasing 203.. The 21-year-old now has the best figures in the format, besting the previous record held by Bhutan’s Sonam Yeshey, who took eight wickets for seven runs against Myanmar in a men’s T20 international in 2025.. In women’s cricket, Cardoso surpassed Indonesia’s Rohmalia Rohmalia’s figures of 7-0 against Mongolia in 2024.. Cricket Brasil president Roberta Moretti, who witnessed all of Cardoso’s dismissals from her position at first slip, said her team-mate is a player with huge potential.. “I don’t think this is the end. She’s still only 21 and I believe Laura is someone who can one day play at the elite level in England and Australia,” she told BBC Sport.. “For me it’s a joy to see an athlete like Laura becoming the cricketer she is, with her work ethic and passion for the game.. “She came from one of our grassroots programmes and through all of the pathways and is one of the greatest cricketers Brazil has produced.”. Cardoso started her remarkable run of dismissals by taking wickets with five consecutive deliveries, spanning the last three balls of the second over and first two of the fourth to leave Lesotho sprawling on 8-5.. She took two further wickets in the remainder of the over, recording a second maiden, then removed another pair of batters in the fifth over.. However she was denied a 10-wicket haul when Marianne Artur had Lindiwe Polaki, one of only three Lesotho batters to score a run, stumped to conclude the match.. Brazil are unbeaten in five matches at the six-team Kalahari Women’s T20 tournament, which is being staged entirely in Gaborone, the capital of Botswana.. Related topics. Cricket. More on this story. NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! SAN DIEGO, California – The Artemis II lunar mission is approaching its finale, beginning with a safe splashdown near the San Diego coastline. The Orion spacecraft, with four astronauts aboard, is slated to return on Friday, aided by the U.S. Navy in retrieving the capsule and crew from the Pacific Ocean. San Diego, steeped in Navy heritage, is at the heart of this operation. Multiple bases in the region are spearheading the recovery efforts, instilling a sense of pride and excitement in the community. Residents and visitors from nationwide are anticipated to assemble along the shoreline and at local museums to celebrate the crew’s return. ARTEMIS II ASTRONAUTS SHOW OFF APOLLO 18 FLAG FROM SPACE. “Deep space is back in the game,” said Jim Kidrick, president and CEO of the San Diego Air and Space Museum. “Back to General Patton in World War II—you know, Americans love winners and won’t put up with losers.” This mission represents the latest milestone in space exploration, concluding—at least temporarily—off the Southern California coast. The Orion astronauts are heading home after circling the moon and traveling over 252,000 miles from Earth. “I think people have been invigorated by one word dominating space today, and that’s the moon,” Kidrick added. ARTEMIS II PILOT VICTOR GLOVER’S DAUGHTER STEALS THE SHOW WITH TRIBUTE. At the museum, the narrative of the Apollo program takes center stage once more, as focus returns to deep space over 50 years later. “There are so many…historic moments that have happened.” “It’s pretty cool to be part of one of them,” said Abigail Lawrence, who’s visiting from Utah. Other visitors to San Diego for the splashdown expressed similar enthusiasm. “You know what?”

Six big questions for Fury’s fifth return from retirement

ByKal Sajad. BBC Sport boxing journalist in London. 55 minutes ago. He’s back, again. Tyson Fury returns to the ring on Saturday against Arslanbek Makhmudov at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium.. The 37-year-old retired following a second consecutive points defeat to Oleksandr Usyk in December 2024. With a history of retiring and coming back, few felt he was gone for good.. Still, another hiatus from the sport leaves questions about what the Gypsy King has left to give in boxing.. BBC Sport speaks to WBO heavyweight world champion Fabio Wardley, two-weight world champion Natasha Jonas, boxing analyst Steve Bunce and renowned trainer Joe Gallagher to explore the big questions.. Is Makhmudov a risky opponent?. Image source, Getty Images. Wardley: “A very well-picked opponent for a number of reasons. He looks and sounds the part – a strong, aggressive and powerful Russian – but stylistically he’s kind of perfect for Fury.”. Jonas: “Every fight at heavyweight is a tough fight. It only takes one shot. But you would expect someone of Tyson’s class and experience to be able to handle him.”. Bunce: “Makhmudov is a really risky opponent for Fury because Makhmudov has something that all heavyweights want. After that win over Dave Allen, he has momentum.”. Gallagher: “All heavyweight opponents are dangerous. Stylistically, though, I think he’s made for Fury. He comes in straight lines and Fury’s boxing brain and ability should be too much.”. Can Fury become a world champion again?. Wardley: “In the current state of the heavyweight division, I can’t see how Fury becomes a world champion again. He would have to fight either me or Usyk – and do I think he can beat either of us? No.. “If the titles get fractured – if Usyk is stripped of a belt for one reason or another – and Fury fights someone like Lawrence Okolie or Agit Kabayel for a vacant title, then yes, he can become champion.”. Jonas: “It will be difficult for anyone to regain a world championship at heavyweight if Usyk doesn’t vacate. It all depends on him.”. Bunce: “Anybody in the top 20 or so heavyweights could become a champion in the next 12 to 18 months. Fury can definitely become a champion again. If Usyk decides to give up one, two, or even all of his belts – then Fury would be a major contender.”. Gallagher: “I think he can. It all depends on the sanctioning bodies and what happens with vacant belts and stripping champions. He’s a two-time world champion – as is Anthony Joshua – and I’m sure the race is on between them to be a three-time champion.”. Croke Park could stage Fury v Joshua in September. 20 hours ago. Fury unlikely to be world champion again – Wardley. 1 day ago. Tyson Fury Unfiltered. Could Fury beat Usyk?. Image source, Getty Images. Wardley: “I don’t think he would beat Usyk right now. For me personally, there’s no appetite in it either. I think at the moment we want to see Usyk in with someone different.”. Jonas: “I would love to see the trilogy but I just don’t know it will happen. Do

Can stats help you find the Grand National winner?

Image source, Getty Images. ByCallum Matthews. BBC Sport senior journalist. 1 hour ago. The Grand National at Aintree is among the highlights of the British horse racing calendar.. But, with 34 runners, picking the winner can be something of a lottery.. Can the past winners guide you in the right direction? BBC Sport looks at the data to try to find the 2026 winner.. Grand National 2026. Saturday 11 April, 16:00 BST. Aintree. Listen on Sounds. Full race commentary and reaction on BBC Radio 5 Live and BBC Sounds, with live text on all of Saturday’s races on the BBC Sport website and app. 5 Sports Extra will have commentary of Friday’s races between 14:00-16:15 BST.. Grand National pinstickers’ guide to runners. 15 hours ago. I Am Maximus heads Grand National field. 15 hours ago. Grand National: Runners, weights & jockeys for 2026 race. 15 hours ago. How do favourites fare and what price does the winner tend to be?. [embedded content]. Since 2000 there have been 25 renewals of the race, with no running in 2020 because of the Covid-19 pandemic.. The shortest-priced winner was Tiger Roll at 4-1 in 2019, when he became the first back-to-back victor since Red Rum in the 1970s.. The biggest price was Mon Mome in 2009 (100-1), with last year’s winner – Nick Rockett – going off at 33-1.. The average price of the winner this century has been just under 24-1, so with that – and the fact eight winners have been priced 33-1 or higher – don’t let bigger odds put you off.. That said, the average price does drop in the past 10 renewals, with the winner 11-1 or shorter on five occasions.. Six favourites (including joint favourites) have won the race this century, with three of those in the past six – including I Am Maximus in 2024.. The favourite or a joint-favourite has also finished in the top five on a further 12 occasions since 2000.. Is there an ideal weight to carry?. [embedded content]. There is no obvious trend, with winners of the past 25 races carrying between 10st 3lb and 11st 9lb.. If that continues, that would rule out the top six in the field – particularly I Am Maximus, who is attempting to become the first top weight to win since Red Rum carried 12 stone to victory in 1974.. Nine of the past 11 winners have carried between 10st 5lband 11st 8lb,which may help you to reduce the field a little.. Looking across the past 25 runnings, the average weight of the winner is between 10st 12lb and 10st 13lb. Those specific weights have a combined three winners, while 11st 6lb has been the most successful individual weight with three victories.. How old should my horse be?. [embedded content]. This is where the trends – certainly in recent years – become a bit easier to spot.. No horse aged 10 or above has won the race since 2014, while in 2022 Noble Yeats bucked another trend by becoming the first seven-year-old to win the race since Bogskar in 1940.. Based on that, the date suggests horses aged eight or nine are the ones to focus on.. Aside from Noble Yeats’

‘We should not be at the mercy of events abroad’ – Starmer

“We must not be subject to the whims of foreign events” – Starmer. Four hours ago. Kate Whannel, political reporter. Images from Getty. The UK must build greater resilience to navigate a “volatile and dangerous” world rife with frequent “shocks” such as the conflict in Iran, Prime Minister Sir Keir Starmer has cautioned. In an article for The Guardian, he stated he is “thinking about the long-term, and remaking this country” to ensure people “are not at the mercy of events abroad.” In a separate appearance on ITV’s Talking Politics podcast, he expressed frustration that “families across the country see their bills go up and down… because of the actions of Putin or Trump.” The prime minister is on a three-day Gulf tour to engage with regional allies. On Wednesday, he met Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman in Jeddah, and on Thursday, he visited the UAE, Bahrain, and Qatar. His trip coincides with strains on a fragile ceasefire halting the Iranian conflict, amid disputes over whether it includes Lebanon. On Thursday evening, Sir Keir spoke by phone with US President Donald Trump. Downing Street states that the two men discussed the need “for a practical plan to get shipping moving” through the Strait of Hormuz, the shipping lane effectively closed due to the conflict. Israel to hold talks with Lebanon as death toll from Beirut attack rises to at least 303. The prime minister states that Israel’s strikes on Lebanon are unjust and must cease. Ships stay wary as they near the Strait of Hormuz during the shaky ceasefire.
