‘Dost aate toh woh room chale jaate’: Suniel Shetty on why he chose to live next door to his parents

Suniel Shetty on why it’s important to stay close to your ageing parents (Photo: Instagram/suniel.shetty). During a conversation with Raj Shamani, actor Suniel Shetty spoke about an important but often overlooked aspect of caring for ageing parents — being present without taking away their independence. Recalling his decision to live close to his parents while still giving them space, Shetty said: “I didn’t buy a house, I bought a home because it was attached to dad’s and mom’s house, so I wanted to give them their privacy, not because I had a family. Because otherwise, they are always compromising. Dost aate toh woh room chale jaate, that’s a typical parent. I do it today also, Ahaan says Papa, sit down, no, no, Mana and I say, let’s go. So I bought the house opposite, we were connected, yet disconnected.”. Experts say this idea of being close but not intrusive plays a crucial role in the emotional well-being of older adults. According to psychiatrist Dr Pavitra Shankar, Associate Consultant – Psychiatry at Aakash Healthcare, maintaining both proximity and independence is key to healthy ageing.. She explains that ageing parents benefit from having their children nearby, but preserving autonomy is equally important. “A balance between proximity and independence is extremely important for ageing parents,” Dr Shankar said. “Living close to family provides emotional reassurance, practical help during emergencies and opportunities for regular communication.”. However, she emphasised that personal space should never be overlooked.. “Maintaining autonomy allows older adults to retain a sense of control over their daily lives,” Dr Shankar explained. “Independence in later life is closely linked to dignity, self-worth and psychological wellbeing.”. “An arrangement where family members are nearby but boundaries are respected often promotes both emotional safety and healthy ageing,” Dr Shankar added.. View this post on Instagram. Why parents often prioritise their children’s comfort. According to Dr Shankar, this behaviour is rooted in long-standing psychological patterns formed during years of parenting.. “Many parents develop a self-sacrificing mindset over time because caregiving has been a central part of their identity,” Dr Shankar said. “For years, their focus was on prioritising their children’s needs over their own.”. Story continues below this ad. Over time, this behaviour becomes deeply internalised. “Psychologically, the nurturing and attachment instincts of parents do not disappear with age,” she explained. “Even when children become adults, many parents still feel responsible for their comfort and happiness.”. “In many cultures, including in India, parents are conditioned to put family before themselves,” Dr Shankar noted. “While this reflects deep love and care, families should gently encourage ageing parents to prioritise their own comfort and wellbeing too.”. Beyond the label: Women and the emotional exhaustion of being ‘strong’ and ‘independent’

There was a time when calling a woman “strong” meant something uncomplicated. In a man’s world, it meant she fought for her place and earned it. Education, careers, and financial independence — these were victories hard won over generations. But somewhere along the way, the compliment began to carry a different undertone.. Today, when a woman is described as strong and independent, it often sounds less like admiration and more like expectation. She will manage. She will cope. She will carry whatever life throws at her without seeking or, worse, needing help.. Strength and independence — two powerful, positive words — have begun to function like disclaimers.. Over the past week, I spoke to a few women in my life to understand how this label actually feels from their side. What emerged was not resentment towards these words — far from it. The women I spoke to value them deeply, but what frustrates them is how easily strength becomes a reason for the world around them to step back.. Strength does not cancel vulnerability. One of the first things that comes up when women talk about these tags they are often proud to be associated with is how little room it leaves for vulnerability. Manasi Menon, my fiancée, chose to be a doctor, a profession that demands relentless preparation, commitment and long, tiring working hours. None of that bothers her. What unsettles her is the way that choice gets interpreted.. “Since I chose to be extremely career-oriented, society almost begins to look at you like a villain rather than supporting you,” she told me.. The reasoning behind this reaction is familiar. If ambition was your choice, then you must accept every consequence of it without complaint. “It’s almost like I’m not allowed to have a weak moment or say the workload is too much,” she said.. Story continues below this ad. Strength and vulnerability are not opposites. Resilience is not the absence of difficulty; it is the ability to keep going despite it. Most people expect to be cared for, understood and supported when things feel overwhelming. Women are no different. Why should they be?. “Most women deeply appreciate being taken care of and being understood,” she said.. “Exactly like men do.”. When independence becomes an excuse to withdraw support. Another pattern appears inside households. Women today are encouraged, rightly so, to build careers, earn their own money and live independently. But expectations around domestic and emotional labour have not shifted at the same pace.. Ekta, a communication professional, said, “The problem is that while women are now expected to be independent and taught to be independent, men are not taught the same thing.”. Story continues below this ad. This means the workload rarely gets redistributed. “In a way, women end up doing way more while men are still doing the bare minimum,” she said.. Anyone who has watched how households function will recognise what she means. Managing re

Rishab Rikhiram Sharma says 10 years of living in the US has reduced his spice tolerance

Rishab Rikhiram Sharma on his spice tolerance. (Source: Instagram/@rishabmusic). Rishab Rikhiram Sharma has been living in the US for over a decade now, and compared to Indian cuisine, American food can taste relatively bland. Admitting that his geographical location was responsible for reducing his spice tolerance, Sharma said, “My spice tolerance is a little low,” adding, “I feel like women generally do have a higher spice tolerance.”. While there’s no universal rule, some individuals may find that their tolerance for spicy, greasy, and fried foods decreases as they age, said Dr Vinodha Kumary, deputy chief medical officer, Jindal Naturecure Institute. This is especially true if you have been consuming relatively bland food for a while.. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. Why does spice tolerance reduce in some people?. According to Dr Kumary, as people age, their digestive systems may become less efficient. This can result in slower digestion and a reduced ability to tolerate foods that are heavy, spicy, or greasy.”. Slower metabolism makes it more challenging to digest heavy, fatty foods efficiently. “This can lead to discomfort, bloating, and digestive issues, prompting individuals to gravitate towards lighter, more easily digestible meals,” said Dr Sangeeta Tiwari, clinical nutritionist at Artemis Hospitals.. Some individuals may develop sensitivities or intolerances to certain foods as they get older. “Spicy, greasy, and fried foods can be particularly problematic for those with digestive issues like irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) or gastritis,” mentioned Dr Kumary.. View this post on Instagram. Moreover, hormonal fluctuations, particularly in women during menopause, can influence food preferences and tolerance levels. “Changes in estrogen levels can affect taste perception, appetite, and digestion, making certain foods less appealing or harder to tolerate,” mentioned Dr Tiwari.. However, daily consumption of very spicy food is not universally suitable for everyone. Fitness expert and dietitian Garima Goyal shared that individuals prone to acid reflux, gastritis, irritable bowel syndrome, or haemorrhoids cannot tolerate excessive spice as it can irritate the gastrointestinal lining, trigger heartburn, or worsen discomfort. The key distinction lies between spiced and overly spicy.. Story continues below this ad. Traditional Indian cooking uses a blend of spices not merely for heat but for digestion and balance. “When prepared with moderate oil, adequate fibre, and appropriate spice levels, vegetarian Indian meals can be both gut-friendly and nutrient-dense,” shared Goyal.. ‘What are the signs of severe constipation that require medical treatment? Are there any potential complications associated with it?’

A routine bout of constipation can turn dangerous when warning signs like severe pain, bleeding, or prolonged bloating begin to appear. Constipation is a common digestive issue where bowel movements become infrequent, difficult, or incomplete. A person is generally considered constipated when they have fewer than three bowel movements a week, pass hard or lumpy stools, or experience pain while passing stool. But when does this relatively manageable condition turn into a medical concern? The question recently surfaced on Quora, prompting many to wonder the same. We reached out to experts to clear the confusion and explain when constipation becomes serious.. DISCLAIMER: This article is based on information from the public domain and/or the experts we spoke to. Always consult your health practitioner before starting any routine.. To understand when constipation requires professional attention, we spoke to Dr Girish P. Veeranna, Consultant – Medical Gastroenterology & Hepatology at Aster RV Hospital, Bangalore. According to him, severe constipation often presents as persistent difficulty passing stool, abdominal pain that does not improve, or the inability to have a bowel movement for several days despite trying home remedies. Other concerning signs include vomiting, hard or impacted stool, rectal bleeding, and the inability to pass gas. “If you normally have daily bowel movements, going three to five days without passing stool is a warning sign,” Dr Veeranna explains. “Even after three days, consulting a doctor is a good precaution.”. Untreated or severe constipation can lead to multiple complications. Faecal impaction, painful haemorrhoids, anal fissures, rectal prolapse, severe abdominal pain, and, in rare cases, bowel obstruction may occur, requiring urgent medical intervention. “Constipation becomes a potential medical emergency when it is accompanied by severe abdominal pain, blood in the stool, fever, inability to pass gas, or vomiting,” Dr Veeranna emphasises. Such complications may result in infections, diverticulitis, or, in rare instances, bowel perforation.. Also Read | Try this pooping hack if you suffer from constipation. Certain symptoms that appear alongside constipation should never be ignored. Rectal bleeding or black and tarry stools, persistent vomiting, sudden or severe abdominal pain, unexplained weight loss, and fever or intense cramping are all red flags. “These could indicate serious underlying conditions affecting the digestive tract. Prompt evaluation is essential,” Dr Veeranna warns.. While constipation is often linked to diet, hydration, and lifestyle, persistent or severe constipation should never be dismissed. Monitoring bowel habits, staying hydrated, consuming a high-fibre diet, and seeking timely medical attention when warning signs appear are key to preventing serious complications. Persistent constipation, rectal bleeding, sudden abdominal pain, or vomiting are all signals that it is time to see a

‘I used to feel so lonely’: Manushi Chhillar opens the doors to her 36th-floor Mumbai home, shared with her parents and brother

Former Miss World and Bollywood actor Manushi Chhillar recently welcomed viewers into her sea-facing home in Mumbai, giving fans a rare glimpse into a space that is still being lovingly put together.. Moving in just a week before the tour, Manushi opened her doors with characteristic warmth and candour, revealing a home that is as thoughtful and grounded as the person who lives in it. “Home for me is where my loved ones are,” she told Bollywood Bubble, and that sentiment is evident in every corner of the expansive apartment.. Manushi’s journey to this apartment is one of gradual rootedness. Originally from Delhi, she first came to Mumbai to compete for Miss India, living with the other contestants before eventually becoming a permanent resident of the city after winning Miss World. Her early days in the city were spent in the Miss India penthouse in Bandra, a beautiful address, but one that felt increasingly lonely as the other girls moved on.. The living area is expansive and airy, benefiting from natural light pouring through the large windows overlooking the sea. (Source: YouTube/Bollywood Bubble). “I used to feel so lonely when I used to come back home,” she recalled. That loneliness prompted her to reach out to her parents. “I said, okay, I’m only 20. I’m in Bombay. I’m trying to figure life out. It would mean the world to me if you guys could just move to Bombay with me.”. Her parents eventually relocated, and the family moved between Bandra and Andheri before finally deciding on a permanent home together. A recommendation from a family friend brought them to this building, which they fell in love with for its community, central location, and above all, its view.. The apartment: Space, scale, and sea views. The apartment is a sprawling five-and-a-half BHK on the 36th floor, and the sea view is its undeniable crown jewel. Manushi lights up when she talks about it. “It’s very interesting, especially at night, to kind of just dim the lights and actually look at people because it’s so interesting how busy Mumbai is even at night,” she said.. Manushi has a clear aesthetic vision for the space: clean, uncluttered, and practical. (Source: YouTube/Bollywood Bubble). The home houses Manushi, her parents, and her brother, with a dedicated guest room always ready for her sister and brother-in-law whenever they visit. Each family member has been considered in the division of the space. Her father, a doctor, has a quiet study where he can continue learning; Manushi herself has her own room, a personal study for script preparation, a vanity, and a small art studio where she paints.. Your ultimate guide to cleaning a coffee brewer

Cleaning a coffee brewer or machine is essential not only for maintaining the flavour of your brew but also for preventing the buildup of harmful bacteria, mould, and mineral deposits. “Regular cleaning ensures the machine functions efficiently and prolongs its lifespan,” said Bhawna Kapoor Bajpai, publicist and a home-cooking expert.. A poorly cleaned coffee machine can become a breeding ground for bacteria and mould, which may impact your health over time. “It’s vital to clean the visible and hidden components, such as the carafe, filter basket, and internal water lines, to ensure your coffee is delicious and safe to consume,” noted Bajpai.. Content creator Juan Abi shared in an Instagram video that it is essential to take out all screws and components and clean them in hot water and vinegar: “Just leave it out there. Towel dry and put it back.”. She suggested skipping plastic coffee pods as “they can release chemicals into your coffee, leading to imbalances in the body.” “Opt for old-fashioned espresso machines for better taste and health,” said Abi.. What will you need to clean?. Chef Shipra Khanna shared:. •White vinegar. •Water. •A clean sponge or soft cloth. •A small brush or toothbrush (optional for hard-to-reach areas). •Dish soap. •Paper towels or a drying cloth. Bajpai shared detailed steps for cleaning a coffee brewer:. Daily cleaning. *Empty and rinse the carafe, filter basket, and any removable parts with warm vinegar water.. *Wipe the exterior with a damp cloth to remove coffee stains or spills.. Fill the water reservoir and run a brewing cycle halfway. Turn off the machine and let it sit for 30 minutes to break down mineral deposits, then complete the cycle. Rinse thoroughly by running 2-3 cycles with plain water to remove any vinegar residue.. Khanna said that descaling is a must. “If the machine has heavy mineral deposits, use a commercial descaling solution instead of vinegar,” said Khanna.. Clean hidden parts. Wash reusable filters in soapy water or run them through the dishwasher if dishwasher-safe.. Pay attention to areas like the spout, gasket, or drip tray (if applicable). “A toothbrush to remove coffee grounds and buildup can help,” Khanna said.. Story continues below this ad.
