Lead Nancy Guthrie cop had no homicide experience, sheriff benched top detectives: sources

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!. As questions mount about Pima County Sheriff Chris Nanos’ handling of the search for 84-year-old Nancy Guthrie, two sources with knowledge of the department say his management decisions initially pulled the most experienced investigators off the case.. Only one detective had more than three years on the homicide squad at the time of Guthrie’s suspected abduction, the sources told Fox News Digital. The other five had less than two. The sergeant supervising them had been put in charge of the unit with only six months of experience as a sergeant and before he’d ever personally worked a homicide case.. There was another homicide detective with less than a year of experience, but he was transferred out.. Meanwhile, at least two seasoned homicide detectives had already been sidelined because they were not “favored” by Nanos’ leadership team, according to one of the sources. They were sent over to the cold case division.. SAVANNAH GUTHRIE BREAKS DOWN OVER POSSIBILITY HER MOM WAS TARGETED BECAUSE OF HER FAME, APOLOGIZES TO FAMILY. The sheriff later brought one of them into the Guthrie investigation after it went into a task force phase in late February. The task force, consisting of county detectives and FBI agents, is separate from the initial homicide squad assigned to the case.. Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown, and Nanos has publicly maintained optimism that she could still be alive, telling Fox News Digital previously that “anything’s possible.” Homicide detectives, however, have been part of the case since the first week.. The homicide sergeant’s apparent lack of experience is not necessarily a problem, either, according to Joseph Giacalone, a retired NYPD sergeant and former professor of criminal justice.. The Pima County Sheriff’s Department did not immediately respond to a request for comment.. “There are other experienced detectives that should be helping,” Giacalone told Fox News Digital. “But also, [Nanos] has two major cities within striking distance, Phoenix and Tucson, who he could’ve asked for some assistance to come in and share their experience and knowledge with his people.”. FOLLOW THE FOX TRUE CRIME TEAM ON X. Doing so would’ve been a sign of leadership, he said.. “A lack of experience can be overcome by mentorship and training,” he added.. SIGN UP TO GET TRUE CRIME NEWSLETTER. At the start of the search for Guthrie, the county deputies union blasted the sheriff for a staffing decision that allegedly delayed the flight of the sheriff’s high-tech search and rescue plane — with its pilot reassigned to regular street patrols.. “You have to understand, he terrorizes the entire department and makes examples out of anyone even perceived to be disloyal,” one of the sources said. “I know that sounds hyperbolic. It is not.”. SEND US A TIP HERE. Although Guthrie’s whereabouts remain unknown after more than two months, Nanos said early on in the case that homicide detectives were involved in

Democrat Providence mayor slams mural project dedicated to slain Iryna Zarutska

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!. The mayor of Providence once again slammed a now-canceled mural project that would have honored Iryna Zarutska, a slain Ukrainian refugee living in North Carolina who was allegedly murdered by a career criminal on public transit last year.. “I regret the state of where we are in politics today where absolutely everything is political and controversial and hard,” Mayor Brett Smiley said in an interview with WPRI. “There’s nothing we should be doing to take away from the tragedy of the loss of life represented here, but then it was distorted by an erroneous tweet by our president and then a movement was funded by some right-wing billionaires, and it found its way to our community.”. Smiley decried the project for not following an unspecified “thoughtful process” through which the city commissions public art. The mural project was privately commissioned and was being painted on the exterior of a private business.. Elon Musk contributed $1 million to help fund a nationwide campaign of public murals depicting Zarutska.. PROVIDENCE MAYOR CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF IRYNA ZARUTSKA MURAL, SAYS INTENT IS ‘DIVISIVE,’ ‘MISGUIDED’. “A private owner of a building decided to put a mural up that I don’t think he understood the full context of, and I was asked whether I thought it should come down, and I thought it should,” said Smiley. “I didn’t stifle anyone’s speech, it was his decision whether to continue with it or to take it down, but it certainly wasn’t bringing us together as a community. There was really angry protests on both sides, a lot of hate speech online, and so I don’t think we’re a stronger, more united community because of this mural, and so I thought the best thing to do was just to take it down.”. Earlier this week, Smiley put out his first statement on the mural, calling it “divisive” and “misguided.”. “The murder of the individual depicted in this mural was a devastating tragedy, but the misguided, isolating intent of those funding murals like the one across the country is divisive and does not represent Providence,” the statement said, later adding that he wants to “encourage our community to support local artists whose work brings us closer together rather than divide us.”. The business that planned on displaying the mural was The Dark Lady, an LGBT bar in the city.. Facing backlash from the LGBT community and others, the owners of the bar first defended themselves, saying on Instagram, saying, “Any of you who know us personally—even just for five minutes—realize the illicit intentions being portrayed here are completely false.”. The next day, the bar released a statement saying the project was being “temporarily” paused.. Still, the business faced intense heat.. On Tuesday, the bar said that after “reflecting and learning,” the project was officially shut down.. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP.
