Democrat Providence mayor slams mural project dedicated to slain Iryna Zarutska

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!. The mayor of Providence once again slammed a now-canceled mural project that would have honored Iryna Zarutska, a slain Ukrainian refugee living in North Carolina who was allegedly murdered by a career criminal on public transit last year.. “I regret the state of where we are in politics today where absolutely everything is political and controversial and hard,” Mayor Brett Smiley said in an interview with WPRI. “There’s nothing we should be doing to take away from the tragedy of the loss of life represented here, but then it was distorted by an erroneous tweet by our president and then a movement was funded by some right-wing billionaires, and it found its way to our community.”. Smiley decried the project for not following an unspecified “thoughtful process” through which the city commissions public art. The mural project was privately commissioned and was being painted on the exterior of a private business.. Elon Musk contributed $1 million to help fund a nationwide campaign of public murals depicting Zarutska.. PROVIDENCE MAYOR CALLS FOR REMOVAL OF IRYNA ZARUTSKA MURAL, SAYS INTENT IS ‘DIVISIVE,’ ‘MISGUIDED’. “A private owner of a building decided to put a mural up that I don’t think he understood the full context of, and I was asked whether I thought it should come down, and I thought it should,” said Smiley. “I didn’t stifle anyone’s speech, it was his decision whether to continue with it or to take it down, but it certainly wasn’t bringing us together as a community. There was really angry protests on both sides, a lot of hate speech online, and so I don’t think we’re a stronger, more united community because of this mural, and so I thought the best thing to do was just to take it down.”. Earlier this week, Smiley put out his first statement on the mural, calling it “divisive” and “misguided.”. “The murder of the individual depicted in this mural was a devastating tragedy, but the misguided, isolating intent of those funding murals like the one across the country is divisive and does not represent Providence,” the statement said, later adding that he wants to “encourage our community to support local artists whose work brings us closer together rather than divide us.”. The business that planned on displaying the mural was The Dark Lady, an LGBT bar in the city.. Facing backlash from the LGBT community and others, the owners of the bar first defended themselves, saying on Instagram, saying, “Any of you who know us personally—even just for five minutes—realize the illicit intentions being portrayed here are completely false.”. The next day, the bar released a statement saying the project was being “temporarily” paused.. Still, the business faced intense heat.. On Tuesday, the bar said that after “reflecting and learning,” the project was officially shut down.. CLICK HERE TO DOWNLOAD THE FOX NEWS APP. ICE nabs alleged machete-wielding MS-13 gangster wanted for murder: ‘the witch’

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!. California’s sanctuary law is under fire yet again after a notorious MS-13 machete-wielding gangster known as “the witch” has been nabbed for the second time in the state after being caught and released during the Biden administration in 2023.. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents in San Diego have arrested David Antonio Aviles Perez, 35, who is wanted in El Salvador for aggravated murder. He was first arrested and released in Monterey, California, in 2023 on suspicion of assault with a deadly weapon after allegedly swinging a machete at a man.. “ICE arrested this dangerous criminal illegal alien and MS-13 gang member wanted in El Salvador for murder,” Acting Assistant Department of Homeland Secretary (DHS) Lauren Bis wrote in a statement last week.. “Gavin Newsom’s sanctuary policies allowed this gang member to be released from jail after his arrest for assault with a deadly weapon, possession of a controlled substance, and petty theft.”. DHS CALLS RAPE OF AUTISTIC TEEN ‘MOST HEINOUS WE’VE SEEN’ AS ICE DETAINER TESTS CALIFORNIA SANCTUARY LAWS. ICE netted one of El Salvador’s most notorious executioners in the same week DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin was sworn in by President Donald Trump.. Aviles Perez is being held pending removal to El Salvador, a contrast to his Biden administration release as an illegal alien alleged to have threatened a California man with a machete in 2023.. The case has intensified criticism from federal officials of California’s sanctuary law under Newsom, which limits local cooperation with federal immigration enforcement.. OBAMA-APPOINTED JUDGE ORDERS RELEASE OF MS-13 GANG MEMBER WITH HISTORY OF RAPE, ROBBERY, ATTACKED ICE OFFICERS. “Releasing this gang member back into California neighborhoods put American lives at risk,” Bis’ statement concluded. “Thanks to President Trump and Secretary Mullin, this murderer is off our streets and will soon be out of our country.”. El Salvador had sentenced Aviles Perez, known as “la bruja” (“the witch”), to 20 years in prison for a 2014 gang killing, according to the Salvadoran prosecution’s indictment from December, which reported he was alleged to have “shot the victim in the chest, back, and face” and was a known MS-13 gang member.. Aviles Perez’s criminal violence reportedly continued in California in 2023 after crossing the border at an unknown date. He was alleged to have “swung a machete” at a homeless man at Laguna Grande Park near Monterey State Beach and “hid the machete which was later recovered in the Holiday Inn parking lot,” according to the report.. Alleged MS-13 trio went ‘hunting’ in brutal American cross-state killing spree, prosecutors say

NEWYou can now listen to Fox News articles!. Three alleged MS-13 gang members went on a deadly “hunting” spree across California and Nevada, targeting victims in a string of brutal killings meant to boost their status inside the notorious gang, federal prosecutors said as the trial got underway this week.. The defendants, Jose Luis Reynaldo Reyes-Castillo, David Arturo Perez-Manchame and Joel Vargas-Escobar, are facing a 34-count federal indictment that includes murder, attempted murder and kidnapping in aid of racketeering, along with weapons charges tied to at least 11 killings.. According to the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the District of Nevada, the men, identified as alleged MS-13 members and associates, are also charged with using firearms during crimes of violence, causing death with a firearm and aiding and abetting, in what prosecutors describe as a racketeering case tied to a series of killings across California and Nevada.. The trial, unfolding in federal court in Las Vegas before U.S. District Judge Gloria M. Navarro, is expected to last up to three months.. FOUR ILLEGAL IMMIGRANTS LINKED TO MS-13 INDICTED FOR ALLEGEDLY MURDERING 14-YEAR-OLD BOY IN MARYLAND PARK. During opening statements, prosecutors described what they said was a years-long pattern of extreme violence, with victims allegedly targeted based on little more than suspected ties to rival gang members.. According to reporting from the Las Vegas Review-Journal, Assistant U.S. Attorney Melanee Smith told jurors the attacks were often random and carried out to build reputation within MS-13.. “They went out hunting, looking for people they could kill,” Smith said.. NEVADA JUDGE FREES CONVICTED MS-13 KILLER DESPITE GOVERNMENT WARNINGS ABOUT PUBLIC SAFETY. Prosecutors detailed multiple killings, including the death of 19-year-old Abel Rodriguez, who was stabbed so many times he was left unrecognizable, and Izaak Towery, who was abducted and stabbed 235 times after being mistakenly identified as a rival gang member.. “Towery had no idea what was going on,” Smith told jurors.. Authorities allege the violence was intended to elevate the defendants’ standing within MS-13, also known as La Mara Salvatrucha, a transnational gang that originated in Los Angeles and now operates across the United States and Central America.. ICE SEEKING DETENTION OF 3 ALLEGED MS-13 MEMBERS ACCUSED OF MURDERING 14-YEAR-OLD BOY.
