How to care for your skin during a heatwave, according to dermatologists

Coming back to Chennai after over a year away delivered a raw, visceral jolt to the senses. I anticipated the comforting embrace of home; I didn’t anticipate the air feeling like a convection oven. As one of India’s hottest cities, the humidity here clings relentlessly, and within 48 hours, my skin felt like it was on fire. We all know the mantra of “drink more water and apply sunscreen,” but with such extreme heat index, systemic hydration and sun protection are only half the fight. To survive a heatwave without your skin completely melting down, you need a smart strategy and a major overhaul of your beauty routine (and wardrobe). We consulted the experts to explain how to adjust your habits when temperatures soar. Why does your skin lose it during a heatwave? It boils down to thermoregulation. When the air temperature exceeds your body temperature, your skin depends almost entirely on evaporation to cool down. “For every 1-degree increase in skin temperature, sebum production rises by about 10%,” says Dr. Kiran Sethi, a skin and longevity specialist. This excess oil, combined with sweat and dead skin cells, forms a ‘pore-clogging cocktail’ that triggers the dreaded trio: acne breakouts, prickly heat (miliaria), and fungal infections. The biggest mistakes we make. When your face feels like a slip-and-slide, your first urge is to scrub. Resist.
