That’s the total losses incurred by Championship clubs over the past decade. For context, that sum could buy a pie and pint at a match 300 million times. It would also purchase around 20,193 properties in London’s Mayfair—the UK’s priciest residential area. Or, it could cover 12,000 homes at £250,000 each, sufficient to populate a mid-sized town. You get the point. With two second-tier clubs still pending their latest accounts, the total will climb higher soon. Only three Championship teams posted a profit in 2024-25, including Stoke City, which broke even only after new owner John Coates forgave a £90m loan that masked a potential £29m deficit. “No club can endure long-term in this setup, and if it persists, disaster looms,” cautioned Portsmouth chairman Michael Eisner. “Dark clouds loom over the English football pyramid, and I see a potential implosion leaving just the Premier League standing.” Striking remarks from the 84-year-old ex-Disney CEO, who at Pompey manages one of the clubs that has spent far less than most others in the division. So, has the financial bubble burst in the Championship?
