A suspect armed with a machete randomly assaulted three individuals at New York City’s Grand Central station before being fatally shot by police. The attacker slashed an 84-year-old man and a 65-year-old man in the head and face, and inflicted shoulder cuts on a 70-year-old woman on a subway platform. Police identified the assailant as 44-year-old Anthony Griffin, who disregarded multiple orders to drop the weapon and proclaimed himself Lucifer. Officials stated there was no suspected terrorism link in the incident, which caused train diversions at the nation’s largest rail hub. New York Governor Kathy Hochul described it in a statement as a “senseless act of violence” against “innocent people.” New York Mayor Zohran Mamdani commended the officers’ swift action and announced the release of police body camera footage. NYPD Commissioner Jessica Tisch said at a news conference that the suspect had entered the subway Saturday morning at Vernon Boulevard-Jackson Avenue in Queens, boarded the 7 train to Grand Central-42nd Street station, and attacked one victim on the platform. The attacker went up to another platform upstairs, where he cut two more people. EPA. One of the victims, an 84-year-old man, sustained severe cuts to his head and face, while the 65-year-old man suffered similar wounds along with an open skull fracture, Tisch said. Two transit officers nearby were notified at 09:40 local time (13:40 GMT). “The attacker was wielding a large knife, described as a machete, and was acting erratically, repeatedly claiming he was Lucifer,” Tisch stated. She noted that the assailant disregarded at least 20 commands to drop the weapon and “advanced on the officers with the knife outstretched.” One officer fired two shots at the suspect before both officers tried to provide life-saving aid. The suspect was later declared dead at Bellevue Hospital. All three victims were transported to a hospital with injuries not considered life-threatening. New York police asked residents to steer clear of the area amid the ongoing investigation. The attacker had three previous arrests but no history of Emotionally Disturbed Person (EDP) reports with the NYPD, according to Tisch. New York City.
