Pop Mart and Sony Pictures have announced that the wildly popular Labubu dolls are set to headline their own feature film. The companies stated that a Labubu movie blending live-action and CGI animation is in early development. It will be directed by Paul King, known for Wonka, Paddington, and the BBC comedy series The Mighty Boosh. No release date has been announced. Labubus have exploded into a global phenomenon in recent years, with sales transforming Pop Mart into a toy industry giant valued at nearly $40bn (£29.9bn), outpacing legacy competitors like Barbie producer Mattel. The Labubu frenzy has enabled Pop Mart to venture beyond toys, including running a theme park in Beijing. The company is now entering the film industry. Labubus are Pop Mart’s top-selling toys. Their appeal partly stems from being sold in blind boxes, so buyers don’t know which Labubu they’ll get until they open the package. Celebrities such as Rihanna and Blackpink’s Lisa have been photographed sporting Labubu charms on their designer bags. Pop Mart.
