Marmalades may need to be relabelled under post-Brexit food deal

Marmalades may need to be relabelled under post-Brexit food deal. 13 hours ago. Paul SeddonPolitical reporter. Getty Images. Marmalade has long been a quintessential British preserve, with some recipes handed down between multiple generations.. But jars of the fruity spread could look a little different on shop shelves under the UK government’s planned EU food deal, it has emerged.. The breakfast favourite will have to be sold as “citrus marmalade” if the agreement goes ahead, when Britain will readopt new EU food regulations in a bid to boost trade and reduce red tape for British exporters.. The name change is required because Brussels is relaxing its labelling rules, widening the legal definition of marmalade across Europe for the first time.. A UK government spokesperson said on Friday that British marmalade was “not changing” and would remain the same product available in shops, adding the EU deal would support businesses by removing costly red tape.. UK-EU deal on Irish Sea border could ‘lower food prices’. UK-EU deal moves us on from Brexit rows, Starmer says. Decades-old European regulations incorporated into UK law before Brexit mean only preserves made from citrus fruits can be sold as “marmalade” in shops, with other kinds of fruit spread named “jam” or equivalent terms in other languages.. It is a product of British lobbying in the 1970s for a special commercial status for marmalade cut from bitter Seville oranges, a concoction that has become strongly associated with Britain around the world thanks to Paddington Bear.. But the naming rule laid a linguistic minefield that has been a source of friction with food regulators around Europe ever since.. In 2004, the EU agreed to relax the rule for producers selling fruity wares at farmers’ markets in Austria and Germany.. It has continued to flummox consumers in countries such as Spain and Italy, where “mermelada” and “marmellata” respectively are commonly used for spreads made from other kinds of fruit, such as plums and figs.. A German MEP who had been pushing for a change after Brexit told the BBC in 2017 that the naming rules were “contrary to German linguistic tradition”.. Now Brussels has updated its rules after the UK’s departure, allowing all EU countries to permit non-citrus spreads to be marketed as “marmalade” from June.. However, in line with international norms, citrus-based conserves will need to be distinguished as a separate type of product, and will have to be sold using the new legal name “citrus marmalade”.. The new name was already set to take effect in Northern Ireland this summer, under the 2023 Windsor framework deal that sees it align with EU food laws automatically.. But the UK government has now revealed the updated marmalade decree is among 76 updated EU food-related laws that will apply in England, Wales and Scotland too if its wider food deal is agreed.. A timescale for the rule change in Britain is also yet to be confirmed, and it is unclear whether the updated

Art heist targeting million-dollar masterpieces exposes blind spots in museum defenses, expert warns

NEW Now you can listen to Fox News articles! A daring museum robbery abroad is attracting worldwide notice and sparking fresh concerns about the potential for similar thefts in the United States. Artworks by renowned artists such as Pierre-Auguste Renoir, Paul Cézanne, and Henri Matisse were stolen from Italy’s Magnani Rocca Foundation during the night of March 22-23. The theft grabbed global headlines, but an expert reveals the true story extends far beyond the crime. Geoff Kelly, a former FBI agent from the bureau’s Art Crime Team, told Fox News Digital that such crimes are far more frequent than most realize and nowhere near as complex as they seem. “Stealing the artwork is easy,” Kelly said. It’s not hard to kick in a door, smash a window, and make off with it. Das Video zeigt einen erschreckenden Moment, als maskierte Einbrecher aus Kalifornien gehobene Geschäfte überfallen, bevor sie in luxuriösen Geländewagen fliehen. This reality is heightening concerns over vulnerabilities within museums, including those in the U.S. Kelly noted that museums confront an inherent security challenge. Unlike banks or vaults, museums are designed to be open, accessible, and welcoming to the public—a feature that criminals can also exploit. “Museums are always going to be vulnerable,” he said. “They’re not vaults—they’re meant to be open and inviting.”

Man who put up $100K to find Nancy Guthrie says tipsters should skip the sheriff and call Crime Stoppers

NEW Now you can listen to Fox News articles! As various agencies gather tips in the Nancy Guthrie case, the individual offering a $100,000 reward asserts that Crime Stoppers—rather than the sheriff—provides the most secure option for witnesses to submit information and an attractive one for those seeking payment for reliable details without revealing their identity. “I believe people will step forward if they can remain anonymous and receive a reward,” stated Wisconsin lawyer Michael Hupy, president of Crime Stoppers Milwaukee. In Arizona’s Pima County, the local Crime Stoppers chapter operates as 88-CRIME, reachable at 520-0003-7463. Hupy has already disbursed $75,000 in rewards and pledged an additional $200,000 to help resolve crimes in his community. He told Fox News Digital this week that he spent six figures on the Guthrie case because of the alarming nature of her disappearance. Artemis II astronauts face toilet trouble as they head toward the moon

NEW Now you can listen to Fox News articles! The four astronauts aboard the Artemis II mission have traveled more than halfway to the moon since launching Wednesday from Kennedy Space Center, but a recurring issue has emerged. For the second time since launch, Orion’s toilet is malfunctioning. “During the night, we tried to vent the wastewater tank that’s attached to the toilet.” We encountered issues with it, likely from a suspected blockage we believe was probably caused by ice. Judd Frieling, the Artemis II flight director, explained during a Saturday news conference that they instructed the crew overnight to use their collapsible backup urine devices. The astronauts had faced a similar toilet issue on the mission’s first day. The spacecraft’s moon toilet broke down after launch and continues to be a persistent problem. TRUMP BOOSTS MOON MISSION HYPE AS ARTEMIS II GEARS UP FOR LAUNCH AMID PRESSURE FROM PRIOR SETBACKS. Debbie Korth, deputy manager of NASA’s Orion program, stated that the toilet remains functional. “You know, this is a test flight.” “We’re working out how these systems integrate, but it’s functional and we have backups to complete the mission,” she said. NASA confirmed the toilet remains usable for astronauts’ solid waste. ARTEMIS II LAUNCH CAPTIVATES COLLEGE SOFTBALL GAME AS PLAYERS GAZE SKYWARD IN AWE. “Space toilets and bathrooms are something everyone can easily relate to .. it’s always a challenge,” Korth said. John Honeycutt, chair of the mission management team, said the public’s interest in the Orion toilet was “kind of human nature.”

‘A messed-up situation’ – world champion Dubois on family rift

L’image provient de Reuters. ByKal Sajad. Journalist for BBC Sport boxing. 58 minutes ago. Family has always been at the heart of Caroline Dubois’ boxing journey. But two years ago, the current WBC lightweight champion—sister to former heavyweight world champion Daniel—left the family home where she grew up. The trigger was a dispute with her father, Stan Dubois (also known as Dave), whose intense, high-pressure training regimen shaped both siblings’ upbringings. Caroline departed but kept training with Shane McGuigan, while Daniel pursued his own path. Several of her younger siblings joined her, forging a new family structure along the way. “It’s such a messed-up situation.” “It’s just so complicated,” says Caroline, 25, about the strained relationship. Speaking to BBC Sport from the McGuigan gym in Leyton, east London, with her younger sister Alicia beside her, Caroline expresses hope for reconciliation with Daniel and believes “time” will heal things. But it’s a different matter with her father. “When you distance yourself from someone overbearing, who doesn’t let you have an opinion or a voice, and then you gain that freedom, you discover your likes and dislikes,” she explains. “You figure out who you want to be around, what kinds of people you enjoy, and what kinds you don’t.” Terri Harper tegen Caroline Dubois.
