The Manhattan District Attorney’s Office has announced an investigation into sexual misconduct claims against U.S. Congressman Eric Swalwell. Four women have accused him of offenses from sexual harassment to rape, including an alleged incident in New York. Swalwell, a top candidate in California’s gubernatorial race, rejects the allegations and promises to counter them with “facts.” The New York City prosecutor’s office stated, “We urge survivors and anyone with knowledge of these allegations to contact our Special Victims Division.” Swalwell’s representatives—who represent the lawmaker elected in 2012 to a district near San Francisco—did not immediately reply to the BBC’s request for comment. Pressure mounts for Swalwell to drop out of the California governor’s race amid sexual assault claims. On Saturday, the district attorney’s office urged accusers to come forward, stating: “Our specially trained prosecutors, investigators, and counselors are well-equipped to support you in a trauma-informed, survivor-centered way.” The investigation arrives one day after Swalwell described the allegations as “false.” “For nearly 20 years, I have served the public—as a prosecutor and a congressman—and have always protected women,” added the married father of three.
