A Russian drone strike on a market in southern Ukraine killed five people and wounded 21, including a 14-year-old girl, according to the prosecutor’s general office. The incident occurred at 09:50 (06:50 GMT) in Nikopol, a town opposite Russian-occupied territory across the Dnipro River since the full-scale invasion in February 2022. Regional prosecutors released images of destroyed market stalls littered with metal and glass debris. This follows drone and missile attacks across Ukraine on Friday that killed at least 15 civilians. In response, a Ukrainian drone and missile assault on the southern Russian city of Taganrog overnight killed at least one person and severely injured four, Russian authorities reported. Nikopol, home to about 100,000 people with nearly half having fled for safety, is frequently targeted. However, this strike hit a crowded market mid-Saturday morning, resulting in heavy casualties. A second strike on the same site injured two men, and prosecutors are probing the attacks as war crimes. Ukraine’s air force reported Russia launched nearly 300 drones overnight, with additional casualties in the northeastern city of Kharkiv and northern Sumy region. Moscow claimed to have downed 85 Ukrainian drones. Rostov governor Yuri Slyusar said the Taganrog strike sparked a fire at a logistics firm’s facility. A Ukrainian defense official attributed the casualties there to “Russian air defense actions.” Kyiv also announced strikes on two factories allegedly supporting Russia’s military-industrial complex, including a “massive attack” on a Togliatti plant producing synthetic rubber and petrochemicals. Ukraine’s Security Service later stated drone hits had stopped operations at the Alchevsk metallurgical plant in Russian-held Luhansk, damaging blast furnaces, workshops, and other vital areas in the second such attack this month. Zelensky said allies urged him to reduce strikes on Russian energy infrastructure. Satellite images reveal massive fires at Russian oil facilities after Ukraine’s strikes. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy proposed a truce to Russia during the Easter holidays. So far, Moscow is disregarding that. Russia’s major daytime attacks, once uncommon, are on the rise. Meanwhile, a British intelligence report described the eastern frontline situation as the “most favorable” for Ukraine in 10 months, with Russian troop advances slowing. However, US-led diplomatic efforts to end the war have stalled since President Donald Trump and his team turned attention to the Middle East conflict. Last week, Zelensky traveled to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates, Qatar, and Jordan—all recently hit by Iranian aerial strikes—offering Ukraine’s drone technology and expertise in exchange for help against Russian missile attacks and new fuel supplies.
