Square nail designs are back – here’s how to wear summer’s coolest manicure trend

The Noughties offered up a treasure trove of trends: crimped hair, icy blue eyeshadow and the latest trend to be revived in 2026 is square nail designs. “Square nails are a huge trend at the moment,” says celebrity manicurist Michelle Humphrey. “The ’00s are back, with brands like Miu Miu bringing back nostalgic fashion; of course nail trends follow suit.”. Beloved by everyone from Dua Lipa to Kylie Jenner, square nail designs can be striking and bold or more minimal and low-maintenance, depending on your preference. “We’ve become accustomed to the refined, whereas this shape embraces a bolder structure, which can take a little more confidence to wear,” says professional manicurist Julia Diogo. You just need to be mindful of creating a squared-off tip. “The square shape suits any nail length, but at the moment, medium to longer lengths are trending,” Humphrey shares.. The trend also works well with vibrant patterns, colours and cute motifs. “Square French nails are super cool with a bright white tip and also work well for a more modern mani, where the classic white tip is softer and more natural looking,” Humphrey says, adding that dots, shimmery sheer shades and silver glitter lines are all popular options. “It’s all about tapping into the nostalgia of the Noughties.”. What are square nails?. Square nails have a straight, flat top (or to use its technical name, free edge). The sharp top and sides give the trending nail shape its name.. Why are square nails trending in 2026?. Call it a return of the ’00s or perhaps a clean girl backlash, but square nails are striking and sharp; nothing like the gently curved almond or classic rounded styles that were the norm in the late 2010s and early 2020s. “Y2K trends have been bringing this nail shape right back and I see them having even more of a resurgence this summer,” Diogo shares.. How do you maintain the square nail look?. Square tips work best on stronger nails, as the shape can break easily. Humphrey advises that those with longer talons should make use of a strong formula, like acrylic, hard gel or Polygel. “There’s also the Gel X system, a gel press-on nail that offers many square lengths and shapes,” she says.. What’s the difference between square and squoval nails?. “The main difference is created by the corners,” explains Diogo. Square nails have a sharper, cleaner edge, whereas the corners on squoval nails are softer. “The square edge creates a more structured-looking nail bed, while squoval shaping is subtle and rounded.”. How do you file nails into a perfect square shape at home?. “Square nails are great for narrow, uniform nail beds,” Diogo explains. “We need some length to achieve a square, so you can start by trimming the nails to a medium length,” she adds. “I’d also invest in a cuticle nipper or tool to really push back those cuticles and extend the nail bed,” which is exactly what this shape needs.
