Starving toddler ate diapers and drywall before dying in filthy room while parents lived clean, police say

An Indiana couple was arrested after their malnourished 2-year-old son died in horrific living conditions, with investigators claiming the toddler had eaten bits of diapers and drywall prior to his death and that the parents waited about 53 hours after last seeing him alive before calling 911, per police and court records. Trevor Reichard-Hayes, 39, and Katherine Carter, 31, face murder and neglect charges related to Erik Reichard’s death, according to a Tell City Police Department press release. Officers discovered the child deceased around 1:20 p.m. On March 31, after Reichard-Hayes dialed 911 to report that his wife had discovered their son not breathing. The couple allegedly informed police that they last saw their son alive at about 11 p.m. The day before, responding officers and medics who arrived shortly afterward performed CPR on the 2-year-old, but the child was pronounced dead at the scene. The detective noted in the probable cause affidavit against the boy’s parents that the child was blue and pale, according to PEOPLE. He added that the boy was “extremely skinny” and covered with dozens of sores or bug bites. Erik, who weighed only 15 pounds—roughly half the normal weight for a child his age—had been eating his own diapers, Carter informed police, with the detective suspecting it stemmed from hunger, according to the affidavit. Investigators discovered the home, shared with two other children, was in deplorable condition.
