“I told her that your son had a surprise in store for you and he wanted to share it on The Jerry Springer Show,” Curtis said, according to Entertainment Weekly. The show paid for her flight to Chicago, a nice hotel room, and a limo ride to the show.
During the show her adult son who was in his early or late 40s came out dressed as a “drag queen” and sang a song he wrote for her. “All the lyrics were written bashing his mom, who was, to my knowledge, the sweetest person that I had ever booked on the program. She just sat with class and integrity and took it all,” Curtis remembered.
Curtis went backstage after the segment to check on the woman. He said she cried in his arms. “I was a young man in my 20s at the time, but I knew it was wrong. He recalled that it was wrong and felt terrible. “That night I called Burt Dubrow, [the show’s producer] and told him, ‘Burt I quit. ‘”

The fights were a huge boost to the ratings of the show. It quickly became one of the most watched talk shows in history. Curtis revealed they used sneaky tactics to encourage fights between guests to boost ratings.
“Let’s imagine that I have two brothers who are in conflict. When you are preparing the guests, tell one of them: “If your brother says something that you don’t agree with, you can yell, you could get up in their face, or you could even spit at him. Curtis explained, “But whatever you do, never hit him.” “And you don’t tell the person anything about that.”
“Once you get one person up and spit on someone’s face and then you don’t give any instructions to the other, the other will haul off and knock out the hell of the one who did that, and boom, there’s a fight,” added he.
