This is how your body responds to a 48-hour water-only fast

Prolonged fasting has become increasingly popular for weight loss and improving metabolic health. What really occurs in the body when a person fasts for two days, consuming only water? Dr. Vijay Negalur, Head of Diabetology at KIMS Hospitals, Thane, states that the body experiences various metabolic shifts while striving to sustain energy levels in the absence of food. “After a person consumes only water for around 48 hours, the body starts to alter its energy production process,” states Dr. Negalur. Before beginning any routine, always consult your health practitioner.* Here’s what occurs during this phase: The body changes its energy source. During the initial stages of fasting, the body continues to draw on its stored carbohydrates. “During the first 12–24 hours, the body primarily relies on stored glucose from the liver,” says Dr. Negalur. However, once these glucose reserves are exhausted, the body seeks alternative energy sources.
