Two arrests were made after a possible gunshot was fired near the San Francisco home of OpenAI’s CEO, Sam Altman, early Sunday, just two days after a man allegedly threw a Molotov cocktail at his residence. Amanda Tom, 25, and Muhamad Tarik Hussein, 23, were charged with negligent discharge in connection with the reported shots in the Russian Hill neighborhood, according to the San Francisco Police Department. The police did not name Altman or confirm the residence as his in a press release. An OpenAI spokesperson said the incident was unrelated and that there was no indication Altman’s home was being targeted.
The San Francisco Standard earlier reported that two suspects in a Honda sedan stopped near Altman’s property at about 1:40 a.m. Sunday and fired a shot from the car’s passenger window. Security personnel reported hearing a gunshot before the vehicle sped away, and the car’s license plate was captured on surveillance footage, the outlet said, citing a police report. Detectives identified the car as belonging to Tom, which led officers to a San Francisco home where Tom and Hussein were found and arrested without incident. Three firearms were seized at the residence.
San Francisco Police Chief Derrick Lew said the department takes gun crimes very seriously and praised officers for swiftly identifying the suspects, taking them into custody, and removing dangerous weapons from the streets. The incidents followed a Molotov cocktail attack on Altman’s home and threats to OpenAI’s headquarters in San Francisco on Friday, which the company confirmed. The suspect in that attack was arrested and identified by authorities as Daniel Alejandro Moreno-Gama, facing charges including attempted murder, arson, criminal threats, and possession of incendiary and destructive devices. No injuries were reported in either incident, and police have not released a motive. The Molotov attack occurred days after a New Yorker investigation raised questions about Altman and the company.
