Photos show Athena Strand kidnapping truck as jurors weigh death penalty for killer FedEx driver

NEW You can now listen to Fox News articles! Jurors in Tanner Horner’s murder trial viewed photos of his FedEx truck, the vehicle prosecutors claim was used to abduct 7-year-old Athena Strand from her driveway and ultimately take her life. On Friday, prosecutors presented the jury with a series of images from inside the truck, where Horner, 34, killed Athena in Texas on Nov. The year 2022, specifically the 30th. Horner pleaded guilty to the murder and awaits the jury’s decision on whether he will receive a life sentence or the death penalty. Jurors viewed images of bungee cords and straps discovered in the truck, plus photos of investigators checking the vehicle for biological evidence. Horner originally said he accidentally struck Athena with his delivery truck, but he later confessed to kidnapping her during a Christmas package delivery to her father’s home in Paradise, Texas, and strangling her. Alise Amey, a former crime scene investigator with the Wise County Sheriff’s Office, testified that they recommended removing the truck’s floor due to markings on Athena’s face matching the floor’s pattern. “There were markings on the victim’s face consistent with the floor,” Amey stated. After removal, the large floor pieces were bagged in brown paper, she added. FOX 4 Dallas reported that the court’s video feed was blurred as more crime scene photos were shown to the jury. GOT A TIP? Throughout the week, jurors reviewed hours of evidence as prosecutors, in their opening statements, depicted Horner as calculating, violent, and remorseless in Athena’s killing. “The first thing Tanner Horner says to Athena when he picks her up, puts her in that truck, leans down, and says, ‘Don’t scream or I’ll hurt you,'” prosecutor James Stainton told jurors on Tuesday. Scenic Southern cities tarnished by homeless crime scourge must hold ‘feet to the fire,’ GOP lawmaker warns

One of the South’s most iconic postcard destinations is grappling with rising worries about homelessness, encampments, and public safety, as critics caution that these problems are extending beyond Savannah’s picturesque streets into other charming Georgia cities. A Republican legislator says it’s time to put local governments’ feet to the fire. Houston Gaines, a member of the Georgia State Legislature and a congressional candidate, supports legislation to compel cities such as Savannah, Athens, and Atlanta to more rigorously enforce laws against illegal camping, loitering, and panhandling. “What we’ve accomplished with this bill is holding those local governments accountable and ensuring they enforce the laws they’re required to, whether on illegal camping, loitering, or panhandling,” Gaines stated.

One of America’s most beautiful cities struggles to regain its picturesque streets from homeless encampments and drug hotspots. Gaines, an Athens resident, said the problem extends beyond visible homelessness into a larger issue of public order and crime, impacting business owners, homeowners, students, and visitors. “One constituent went on vacation and returned to find a homeless person had been using her pool all week,” he noted. He also shared complaints from Georgia business and property owners: “Business owners arrive at their storefronts at 5:30 a.m. and find someone sleeping on their front porch,” or someone had defecated right in front of their business.

Bert Brantley, President and CEO of the Savannah Area Chamber of Commerce, has noted that the impact is felt every day throughout the business community. “Our businesses, workers, and downtown residents expect our public safety system to identify those committing crimes and deliver consequences for those illegal activities,” Brantley stated in November 2024.

Savannah subsequently enacted an urban camping ordinance that bans camping, storing personal property in public spaces, and obstructing sidewalks or traffic. Since the law’s implementation, the city reports 179 citations and 15 arrests from enforcement. Officials report that 135 people have interacted with service providers, and about 30% of those contacted have entered shelters following outreach.

Gaines contends that local governments in other Georgia cities haven’t done enough, leaving residents and business owners to bear the costs. “Property owners and homeowners face major expenses and repercussions from installing security cameras or fencing, as do business owners like gas stations and storefronts,” he stated.

Missing American’s husband had ‘spotty’ cell service during 8-hour trek to report disappearance: telecom boss

Freeport, Bahamas — Brian Hooker paddled roughly 22 hours across a 4.5-mile channel in the Bahamas after his wife reportedly fell from their 8-foot dinghy, with no one alerting police. Bahamian authorities said Lynette Hooker, 55, and Brian Hooker, 58, left Hope Town’s Abaco Inn around 7:30 p.m. On April 3, they boarded a smaller boat to reach their yacht. Brian Hooker allegedly told officials that Lynette fell into the water with the ignition key, causing the engine to shut off. He said the current swept her away and he rowed toward a marina at Marsh Harbour. The couple had been en route to their yacht in Elbow Cay.

Local authorities reported that Brian Hooker reached a marina in Marsh Harbour around 4 a.m. On April 5, about eight hours after Lynette Hooker went overboard, a Marsh Harbour marina staff member told Fox News Digital that the husband walked along the south shoreline before reaching the dock area, a distance likely involving a long walk. At the marina, he entered an office and reported his wife missing, prompting staff to contact the police. The daughter of the missing American woman in the Bahamas cited prior issues and demanded a complete investigation.

Guard CJ McCollum led the Hawks with a game-high 29 points, securing their first divisional title since 2003 and bypassing the play-in tournament—reserved for teams seeded seventh through tenth—for the first time in five years. The 18-time NBA champions matched a record with 23 three-pointers, powered by forward Sam Hauser’s eight, while also capturing the Atlantic Division crown. As a result, the New York Knicks—who had previously defeated the Celtics—must settle for the third seed despite a 112-95 win over the Toronto Raptors. Victor Wembanyama, back after missing one game due to injury, shone for the Western Conference’s No. 2 seed San Antonio Spurs in their 139-120 victory over the Dallas Mavericks. The 22-year-old MVP candidate tallied 40 points, 13 rebounds, and five assists. The Denver Nuggets kept their pursuit of third place in the Western Conference alive with a 127-107 victory over the reigning champion and top-seeded Oklahoma City Thunder. Forged through foster care – Ulberg’s path to UFC title shot

Photo credit: Getty Images. Paul Battisonin kirjoittama. – Mikä tuo on? – Ei mitään. Journalist for BBC Sport. 28 minutes ago. Carlos Ulberg has often pictured himself winning a UFC title, and in those moments, he reflects on his childhood. The 35-year-old has led a varied life—from rugby league player to reality TV personality to UFC title contender—but it all began as a foster child. Between ages four and 13, Ulberg bounced between foster homes in New Zealand, staying with dozens of families. He describes some as “good homes” and others as “not so good,” with times when he’d be “beaten up every day” by fellow foster kids—yet those experiences molded him. “That’s what has shaped me into who I am today, and it’s a good thing.” “That’s what has brought out the best in me,” Ulberg tells BBC Sport. “I outgrew that self-pitying mentality and began pushing forward, which built resilience in me.” At UFC 327 in Miami’s Kaseya Center on Saturday, Ulberg will face former champion Jiri Prochazka for the vacant light-heavyweight title after Alex Pereira vacated the belt to move up to heavyweight. [embedded content]. Ulberg, ranked third in the UFC light-heavyweight division, has secured the shot after a nine-fight winning streak. He pauses to reflect on his path from a childhood in foster care to contending for a world title. “What pulls me in most is rewinding the clock and thinking, ‘wow, man.'”
