Humanoid diving robot investigates shipwrecks at the bottom of the ocean

A diving robot explores shipwrecks and sunken planes in a way that humans can’t. But OceanOneK’s 3D vision and touch-based feedback allows people to feel like they’re underwater with the robot.

(CNN) A robot developed at Stanford University in California is diving to sunken planes and shipwrecks in a way humans can’t. OceanOneK is a robot that allows its operators to feel underwater explorers. It has arms and hands, and 3D vision which captures the underwater world in full color. The robot’s back has eight multidirectional thrusters and computers that allow it to maneuver around sunken ships. OceanOneK, here doing an experiment in a swimming pool at Stanford University, resembles a human diver.When an operator at the ocean’s surface uses controls to direct OceanOneK, the robot’s haptic (touch-based) feedback system causes the person to feel the water’s resistance as well as the contours of artifacts.OceanOneK’s realistic sight and touch capabilities are enough to make people feel like they’re diving down to the depths — without the dangers or immense underwater pressure a human diver would experience.Read MoreStanford University roboticist Oussama Khatib and his students teamed up with deep-sea archaeologists and began sending the robot on dives in September. The robot was just completed an underwater expedition in July. “You’re moving very close to this incredible structure, and something amazing happens when you touch or feel it,” said Khatib (the Weichai Professor at Stanford’s School of Engineering, and director of the Stanford Robotics Lab). “I had never seen anything like it in my entire life. I can claim that I touched the Crispi at 500 meters. It was me who touched it. I touched it, I felt it. OceanOne was launched in 2016 and explored King Louis XIV’s sinking flagship La Lune. It is located 328 feet (100m) below the Mediterranean, 32 kilometers (32 miles) from southern France. The 1664 shipwreck was left unexplored by humans. Khatib felt the sensations in the robot’s hands when OceanOne touched the vase. It is trying to save them. OceanOne was born out of a desire to study coral reefs in the Red Sea at depths that are beyond what divers can see. The Stanford team wanted to create a robot that was as close as possible to human divers. This included advanced robotics, artificial intelligence, and haptic feedback. The robot measures approximately 5 feet (1.5m) in length and can register how carefully it must handle objects, such as coral or sea-weathered artifacts. The bot can be controlled by an operator, but it is equipped with sensors and algorithms that allow it to function autonomously and avoid collisions. OceanOneK also received two new types hands and an increase in arm and head motion. Wesley Guo, a Stanford doctoral student, said that the project presents him with challenges that he has never encountered in any other system. It takes a lot of thinking outside the box to find solutions that work. The team tested the robot in Stanford’s recreation center and ran experiments such as balancing a boom with a camera and collecting objects. OceanOneK’s ultimate test was the deep dives. The OceanOneK Mediterranean tour began in 2021. OceanOneK dived to these depths: 406 feet (124 m) to the submarine, 1,095 ft (334 m) to the Roman ship remains, and finally 0.5 miles (852 meter) to prove that it can dive to almost 1 kilometer. It wasn’t easy. It left a memorial marker on the seabed with the words, “A robot’s initial touch of the deep oceanfloor/A vast new world that humans can explore.” Professor of computer science Khatib described the experience as an “incredible adventure” and said that there were still unopened wine bottles aboard the royal ship 340 year after it sank. “This is the first time a robot has been able to go to such depths, interact with the environment, and permit the human operator feel that environment,” Khatib said. Khatib stated that the cargo of the former ship has disappeared, but it remains scattered on the seafloor. OceanOneK found the Roman ship and collected the oil lamps and vases. OceanOneK carefully placed a boom camera within the Crispi’s broken hull to capture video footage of corals and rust formations as bacteria feast on the ship’s iron. Piedra stated, “We travel all the way to France for this expedition, and there you realize that the piece you’ve been working with at Stanford is actually part a larger project.” “You get a sense about how important this is, how significant and novel the dive will be, and what this means to science overall. “A promising futureThe idea of OceanOneK was born in 2014. It has a long future with planned expeditions to lost cities, coral reefs, and deep wrecks. OceanOneK’s innovations also laid the foundation for safer underwater engineering projects like repairing boats and pipelines. One upcoming mission will investigate a sunken steamboat in Lake Titicaca, bordering Peru and Bolivia. Khatib and his crew have bigger goals for the project. Khatib stated that the European Space Agency expressed interest in the robot. The International Space Station will have a haptic device that would allow astronauts to interact directly with the robot. Khatib stated that astronauts could interact with the robot deep under the water. This would be a great way to simulate the task of doing the same on a different planet or moon.

Crypto firms scramble to find banking partners as willing lending partners dwindle

National Quantum Mission to be funded at Rs 6K crore by the Centre

Elon Musk announces he will launch a rival to Microsoft’s ChatGPT

Billionaire Elon Musksaid on Monday he will launch an artificial intelligence (AI) platform that he calls “TruthGPT” to challenge the offerings fromMicrosoftandGoogle.
